It is difficult to rank the new songs - or rather MELODIES that I like while I am not particularly impressed with some of the lyrics. I have only heard the new songs once or twice (except for the 2 singles). After hearing the new songs more, I might even rank them differently.

 

I like the melodies of the new songs, but in terms of lyrics they do not quite match the old Coldplay classics - in particular VLV, CLOCKS, FIX YOU, POLITIK and the SCIENTIST.

I really look forward to hearing Princess of China properly.

 

To those criticizing the choice of Rihanna. I find her voice really good and strong.

 

But when thinking of a good part of Umbrella being filled with lots of Ella, ella, ella - that is comparable with wa-wa-wa-waterfall and para-para-paradise. By the way I like these MELODIES, but not the lyrics.

I got to hear the instrumental track of PoC at the Letterman show - it sounds amazing, it's going to be huge at least for the album, if not as a single esp w/ Rhianna (I could see how her voice would work for it) - so far PoC is up there as well.

 

Heard HLH and CB instrumental tracks - awesome, HLH is so good - So cold, so cold, so cold... No we won't let them take control, we won't let them take control.

 

CB will be a massive "pop" hit, just based on the crowd's (lot of execs, non coldplay fans) response - the quotes are all the "true" fans that think they went too pop, but yet they validate CB over ETIAW and Paradise - CB is as pop as ETIAW and Paradise (which i think is much more unique in its instrumentation than CB except for that opening synth voices part clearly added by Eno).

You have a valid point about CB being just as pop as the others. The difference is that people tend to appreciate musicianship over the synthetic/electronic addons.

Before I do this, I just want to say that there's no songs from this MX era that I dislike. This order is almost guaranteed to change when I hear the actual album in 19 days (yay!).

2.Don't Let It Break Your Heart- The festive beat matches the song's cry of hope that any pain or trouble should not let you down. 9.7/10

3.Charlie Brown- The intro riff is epic. 9.4/10

4.U.F.O.- For someone who feels lost and has no direction. Short but Sweet. 9/10

5.Paradise- Love the pop beat and heavy bass. 8.7/10

6.Hurts Like Heaven- Full of energy and is a nice opening track for a very colourful album. 8.7/10

7.Up With The Birds- Love the the second part (esp. the lyrics: "good things will come in our way." 8.5/10

8.Us Against The World- I like the smooth acoustic sound like that of UFO. 8.5/10

9.Up In Flames- the stark piano mixed with electro beat is truly a unique blend of Coldplay. I also love the ending of the song:"could we pour some water on." 8.4/10

10.Princess Of China- The heavy synths have powered up the duet of Chris and Rihanna. 8.2/10

11.Moving To Mars - Emotions burst throughout the entire song. 8.0/10
