WoM Mylo Xyloto ranking

Featured Replies

I thought about giving it a 6/10 but I gave it a 7 because it's much better than expected. It contains 3 of Coldplay's worst ever songs (Paradise, ETIAW and PoC) and I'm not sure any of the songs off here would find a place in my top 10 favourite CP tracks. And I do think it's Coldplay's worst album. That said, it's not too bad really. I was expecting it to be a complete trainwreck and it just isn't. Some of the songs are forgettable but most are fairly decent. Overall it's a fairly inoffensive but enjoyable listen. I've been listening to it quite a lot over the past day so they must be doing something right.

4 X&Y and 5 Death & All His Friends

1 is AROBTTH

4 X&Y?? omg, ok, i shall not curse.

To me is at the same level as Viva La Vida(My worst favorite Coldplay album).

VLV >>>>> MX. Period.

X&Y>AROBTTH>PARACHUTES>VIVA>MX

MX left me extremely underwhelmed.

4/10

4/10. If it were all dancey synth songs it'd get a 6 for consistency and only being comprised of the pretty good songs. The acoustic songs suck and the up-tempo songs are good. I can ignore the silliness of the lyrics when Chris Martin isn't whining in my ear with utter sincerity, and even paradoxically find a little bit more symbolic meaning and suchforth in them also.

I don't like any of it. I was kinda excited to have Hurts Like Heaven with that little pretty intro MX but it's all just shit.

And don't get me started with Charlie Brown.

It is getting mixed reactions because I do want to say I really do enjoy it.

Yes, it may sound overproduced, but as different as HLH is live from the studio, that's the whole point, the live experience is supposed to be different. I saw their free show in Toronto and HLH and Charlie Brown, and UATW were sensational, but the album versions are special too.

In terms of Paradise, ETAW and PoC, I kind of wish it wasn't Rihanna and just Chris, but hey - it isn't THAT bad...they just need more Chris.

I LOVE the interludes, particularly A Hopeful Transmission.

I am on the fence about Up In Flames. It kind of bores me with the tempo of the album.

I feel Mylo grabbed me with the title track right off the bat more than VLV. As great as Viva is, and I do like it, don't get me wrong, but I am much more infactuated with Mylo Xyloto then I was with Viva.

I can't rake it, and I hate comparing it to previous albums because I appreciate the lads are changing and wanting to be different. The thing with Coldplay, is that they don't sound like anyone else, and they never will. And with the progression of their albums, I don't think they repeat themselves.

I like this album for it's piece as a whole. I won't rake it. Just like I never ranked Viva. The guys put on a great live show, and Chris said this album was 'colourful' - that it definitely is.

That's my honest opinion, after about 4 listens. Disagree with me all you want, but hey, everyone is going to take what they want from it, good or bad!

I just like seeing and talking to people about Coldplay, even if I clash with them

I loved Viva, so bold and anthemic. It really defined one of my summers and I still listen to it a lot. Not that often though, it does get old pretty fast if I listen to it too much.

Chinese Sleep Chant is so fucking cool.

I love CSC, I wish it was a stand alone track.

I didn't know this section existed. You people seem a lot less annoying than those in the MX section. And nicer too.

I like MX. But I think it's weird for a Coldplay album. It's also really polarizing: Some very good moments and some really bad moments. Luckily, I think there are more good than bad (UWTB is pure gold...probably because Chris didn't write all the lyrics :P)

There are also some pretty bad moments (the first two singles released). Can someone tell me why they chose Paradise for a fucking single? It's got to be the worst track on there.

Teardrop, as expected, sounds better in the album than it does standing alone but I could still deal without it. The acoustic moments make me melt (UFO, UATW). Us Against the World, surprisingly, is the best moment in the album for me. I saw it at Lolla, and it was really forgettable. Something about the studio version is really really great /fanboying

DLIBYH is poop though. Is sounds like Chinese Sleep Chant coated in candy and sprinkled with magic dust & sparkles like HLH was treated (but the product is a lot better with HLH). Turn down the music, turn up the vocals. I can't figure out what the fuck Chris is saying. And unlike CSC, it's actual lyrics, and lyrics matter in a concept album. Eno: Take out a couple layers here. For God's sake.

Overall, I'm impressed with it. 7/10

Highlights: UWTB, UATW, UFO, CB

Lowlights: ParaPara, DLIBYH

I'm awkward and would say it's a 6.5/10, so on the above I've voted 6 because I'm cranky and have decided to round down :awesome:

It's only the second half of the album (excluding PoC) that saves the album for me. Otherwise it would be a mediocre attempt at a mediocre genre-spanning (and failing to tick any of the right boxes) album.

I spoke to Max McElligott of Wolf Gang last night and Coldplay happened to come up in conversation (probably relating to how NME and I have beef) and he said that 'Para-para-paradise is trying to appeal to the mass American market because they have a habit of repeating parts of words like 'umbrella-ella-ella''. And he also said that if he was going for a mass American market, that's the sort of gimick he was sure he'd be advised to use.

I kind of don't want Coldplay to stop recording. But at the same time if it is like this, or worse, I'd rather they did just call it a day now.

Chris Martin on BBC R1: The new Paradise video is about an elephant 'finding his family'

wtf

I gave it an 8

i was expecting SO MUCH worse

so i was actually surprised that it's not completely BAD

It's nothing to be compared to earlier stuff but... yanno

idk.

Hah, this poll is much different from the one in the fangirl- I mean Coldplay- section.

Maybe because people in here, oh I don't know, have ears.

I'm sure lots of people there voted before even listening to it

I think the album's biggest problem is its incoherency and that the first half appears to be a lot better than the second half. Still, it's pretty darn good and the songs that had me doubting before now find their place on the album. Up In Flames is a skipper for me right now. If I'd have to rate it, somewhere between 7-8 or something like that.

I'll definitely need a lot more listens to be able to rank his one among the other albums.

And DLIBYH is just fucking noise.

this.

and not in a hip shoegazer way.

The songs I like off the album are:

MX

Us Against The World

Charlie Brown

I sort of like PoC, I mean it's really catchy and it's stuck in my head and I don't think it's the worst. Pretty much all the other songs just annoy me and I end up skipping them after a while.

I'm thinking something around 7.5. There's a lot of good stuff here: HLH and UIF, most notably.

The worst thing is that this is the only Coldplay album aside from X&Y that has some true duds on it. Paradise is actually WORSE in the context of the album. Just this huge, uninspired blob disrupting the beauty of HLH and CB. And DLIBYH is flat out unlistenable. A misguided attempt to rock ends up sounding like Kings of Leon doing Coldplay poorly.

And I dunno what to think of UWTB...

DLIBYH had the makings of a good pop track but it's too much of a cluttered mess with random noise. Charlie Brown remains the only pure pop effort here that I have any affection for.
