About 3 years ago in the LOLdplay thread, someone posted a pic on which Jonny had a some sort of random face, and captioned something about cake. Everyone thought that was very funny and then started to post lots of cake-related pics & captions. And it's still going on! :laugh3:

Yes, it's just a name I gave our video club, because it was the first thing that came to mind.. Strangely enough LOL.. But it's not exclusive anyone can join in.. ;) :D

I had never seen it, and it's the first time I've seen 'One I Love' live anywhere else.. ! Awesome. I think that track is probably my favourite live track ever.. so Its amazing to see...

I know I'm late but I'd like to take that discussion about the documentary back. At the moment, it's a little stressful for me so I'm happy that I got to watch it :)

 

Well... Sunday night (here). Is it time to start commenting on this? Did you all watch?

 

I'll spoiler it, so I can say what I want to...

 

 

 

 

These are my opinions and thoughts, as they come to me..

 

 

Well first off, I didn't expect it to be such an old documentary, but no less interesting for all that.

 

But not entirely accurate was it?

 

Starfish.. this film gave the impression that they did quite a few gigs under that name, when we all know that's not the case.

 

Hardly ANY interviews with the band, lots of photos used over and over.. and all the interviews were more than likely recorded long before the video was put together.

 

Not one single interview or comment from Guy.. it was almost like he didn't exist!

 

Will looked so different! I couldn't get over how much he's changed since then! for the better obviously!

 

Not one single live performance in the entire thing... not even any songs from the band, so one can only assume this was a very un-official thing. Not approved by the band at all.

 

Some extremely young looking Chris's! LOL.. (although the bearded bits were very nice,.. :D )

 

Who were those people they interviewed?! A sound engineer, (Although my ears perked up when I heard they originally recorded in Puttenham... which according to the narrator is close to London.. it's not.. not really, unless you count 50 miles or so close!! Unless it's another Puttenham I don't know about.. I drove past there today.. :D) a promoter, some woman I forget what she was....and some odd bloke in some unknown (at least to me) band... although I thought the promoter (the girl with the terrible accent) was the only one who actually had anything interesting to say!

 

Her predictions about their future, and their fourth album were almost on the money! Which is amazing considering that X&Y wasn't even released at this point.. It gave me goosebumps..

 

I did enjoy it... although it was definitely amateurishly put together, and would as I pointed out above, have benefitted hugely by lots more interviews or quotes from the actual band.. rather than those random people! :P

And about the future...that gave me goosebumps too. I was like OMG that's nearly perfectly accurate. Wow :o

I didn't really like the interviews. I mean they took people who didn't have any close/not so close relation to Coldplay. The sound engineer just talked about what happens in the recording studio. Well okay, it's interesting, but it has nothing to do with Coldplay! And the guy from that unknown band just looked so uncomfortable.

And it's true, they took the same pictures over and over again, that was kind of annoying.

It was so obvious that they weren't allowed to show other pictures/videos/songs.

And Guy didn't exist in that interview!!! That's true.

As I listened to the interview with the random people discussing Coldplay I thought to myself. They could have easily interview us, I've said pretty much some things they discussed. Like Chris and how he uses his voice as an instrument. The uniqueness of Chris's voice, how he holds notes and really means what he's singing.

 

Didn't know he's known Phil since he was 14. They have a long history together. :nice:

 

Chris saying we're all made of the same things, meaning we are same. None of us are better. I say, thank you Chris for not letting things get to your head and acting like an idiot. :)

I also liked the bit about the band dividing things up equally. I don't understand why some bands don't do that more-that lady made reference to how singer/songwriters would assume since they wrote the songs they should get more money, but then I'd argue, well, if they think that, why have a band at all? Why not just go be a solo artist, then? If one is going to form a band, it seems crazy to not want to split things equally. Yes, one person may write the songs, but if they're meant for a band, without all the other members' input it'll just be words and notes on a piece of paper. So I'm always happy when I hear about a band being fair in its dealings, and I like that Coldplay followed that method.

 

 

Now I'll spoiler my specific bits I wanted to note:

 

 

 

1. I totally would've loved to hear that "teenage Pet Shop Boys" type band that was alluded to in reference to the guys' early days in various bands :lol:.

 

2. Couple of interesting "what if"s (and no pun intended here :p):

-Will nearly lost out on being a drummer twice if this is anything to go by, 'cause his friend was originally supposed to be the drummer, and then after the fight with Chris he left!

-Starfish was their original name, as noted

 

Had Will not been the drummer, and had they stuck with Starfish as a name, one wonders what would've become of them? Bit of food for thought.

 

3. I liked the bit about them breaking America. It's very funny how we can be hot and cold sometimes with our foreign acts here. Blur didn't make a huge splash, Radiohead has a cult following, Coldplay broke big, so did Oasis (briefly in the latter's case, but still-I sure heard them on the radio a hell of a lot more than I did Blur in the '90s). And then tracing back, we had the Beatles and Stones getting huge, but the Kinks took a while (being banned for 5 years likely didn't help matters there), and the Jam and Squeeze later on also struggled here.

 

It's very hit and miss sometimes, and I think some of it might have to do with the fact that groups like Coldplay, Oasis, the Beatles, the Stones...they're British and may have moments that indicate that here and there, but they still have enough universal themes that people here in the States can relate to as well. Blur and the Kinks and the Jam dealt with specifically British themes sometimes, and unless you were up on your British culture it might not have had much relevance for you.

 

(Me, personally, I love music from all the aforementioned bands above. I'm pretty much a sucker for most British music in general. And if I don't get the reference it intrigues me a bit and makes me want to find out what they're talking about)

 

But that could be a whole other tangent. Still, I'm curious about others' thoughts on that subject.

 

4. I also like how they talked about how different Coldplay were from some of the stuff getting airplay here in the States. At the time the band started breaking over here, there were so many Nickelback/3 Doors Down/Staind types of bands going around, and I just could not get into those sorts of acts AT ALL. So when I started hearing songs like "Trouble", or "In My Place", or "The Scientist" on the radio at that time period it was like a breath of fresh air. Something beautiful. Something pretty. Something new and interesting and uplifting for once. I love dark music as much as the next person, and love a lot of '90s bands that the 3 Doors Downs and Nickelbacks and whatnot were inspired by, but at the end of the day I need some happiness and hope and such in my music, too. And Coldplay provided that. And still does. That's always been a big part of their appeal for me.

 

Okay, so that got a bit long-winded, perhaps, LOL. But there's kinda my main thoughts, so...take from it what you will.

 

 

Oh, and one more thing-that repetitive drumming that kept going on in the background music at points-did that give anyone else a bit of a headache after a while or was it just me :p?

About the "equally splitting" bit: It's true, that's awesome. But I think now it's different, cause Chris said he gets 40 % and the others 20% (I think it was in the Howard Stern interview). I don't blame him for that, but it just seems to have changed now. :)

 

And I agree with the rest, especially with the repetitive drumming. :D

As for THIS week's video..

 

Where do I start?

 

 

 

 

Firstly I watched it twice, once from the download, and once from the Youtube link. I have to say the youtube link was a fuller concert, although not the entire thing.. I searched the web, coldplay bootlegs, all over the place for you, in case someone had it, but sadly not.. so we will have to go with this one. It's the same as the Rapidshare one, in that Clocks - an encore, seems to have been cut and put into the middle of the concert.. so one moment Chris is in a black T, the next a white.. :thinking: and then switches back to black again! But having got the technical bits out the way, I'd like to say it was a lovely gig.. another one I wish I'd been at.

 

As I said above, One I love and probably GPASUYF were highlights for me. Such energy! And I love the way Chris dances with his guitar.. he doesn't do that any more does he. Although he dances, it's not with his guitar.. well not like that anyway..

 

Oh and how strange to see microphone cables! I think I mentioned in one of the other threads that it would have been harder for Chris to do some of his acrobatics if microphones still had leads, so it's probably as well they don't!

 

Didn't they all look YOUNG.. ? Scary.. It's only ten years ago... but it seems longer somehow..

 

Now I need to mention Jonny's Guitar playing.. wow.. wow.. How come it seems more alive then than now? Is it to do with the lack of backing tracks, synths back then, etc, so it's more noticable/louder? I know that when I saw them at the Little Noises, I was blown away by his guitar playing.. and not just because I was dead in front of his amps either.. I think he tends to blend in more now.. But I need to see them live again to make certain.. :D But every time I see or hear some of these older gigs I still get chills when they play something like ROBTTH... or Daylight.. and whilst we're on the subject of Daylight.. that ENTIRE song needs a 15 or even an 18 rating I think! LOL.. Lord.... (is it hot in here?) Chris doesn't sing like that any more either! :cool: (Clocks needs its own rating for EVERY performance.. !! But this one is off the meter! LOL!! I wouldn't begin to try and rate this one! LOL - but I think there may well be some little piano stools running around somewhere with blond curls after this performance! :p).

 

Then there is as I mentioned above, One I Love.. The wonderful sounds Jonny's guitar makes.. wow wow... (I think Chris may well be right and Jonny is the best guitarist in the world, except maybe Slash..LOL)..and Chris' guitar too actually, what a lovely tone that guitar has.. and Chris' little 'ooh's' :D I think I may well be in love with this song live... :dazzled: :D I've always loved it on the 2003 DVD, but I think this version might actually be better.. It could be the Rocker in me.. but Oh I wish they'd play this live now... and I wish they'd do more songs like this.. then of course the whole thing is held together by Guy's wonderful bass.. and of course Will's drumming.. which I do think is even BETTER these days.. although it was good then too..!

 

I do LOVE their ballads too of course.. The scientist was awesome as usual.... damn I want it to be June NOW !! :\ :D and in fact it was all lovely.. :D

 

Edit.. I forgot the bit where he sings I want to take my clothes off!! :bomb: Damn

Mara, that's right, I forgot about that bit from the Howard Stern show. Hm. I wonder what changed with that?

 

When I played the download link for this concert, yeah, it came in at "A Rush of Blood..." for me. The YouTube one started off with "Politik". And I did notice the constant shirt change, which amused me, but that part didn't bother me too much (Chris looked good in either instance, so hey, fine enough by me :D). I'll try and watch the download version later, though.

 

But my thoughts after watching the YouTube one...here we go:

 

 

Normally I'm not one of those people who's all, "*Insert favorite band here* should play this song at a concert!"-I have a few songs I personally would love to hear that don't get played often, if at all, sure, but I don't get too into setlist nitpicking the way some people do.

 

HOWEVER...note to Coldplay: I would strongly suggest "Daylight" pop up in a setlist here and there at least at some point on this upcoming tour of yours. I would not complain one iota about hearing that one live. I think the tricky, trippy, hazy sound of that song would actually fit in quite well within the whole neon color motif the band has going on now-it'd be a weird, psychedelic acid trip of sorts :laugh3:! That performance of "Daylight" from the concert was AWESOME. I think it particularly showcased the instrumental side of the guys quite well-I could hear Guy's bass loud and clear, all nice and deep and groovy, so to speak, Will had a tight, sharp drumming going on, Jonny's guitar was clear and ringing and even kinda menacing in a way...it was GOOD stuff.

 

Other highlights were "The Scientist"-the performance of that one at this show actually gave me goosebumps/shivers. So, so, so incredibly pretty. Same with "In My Place" (and aw, a cute Buckin moment halfway through :lol:). Those performances proved why those are two of my all-time favorite Coldplay songs.

 

Loved the little bit about Westlife and Boyzone, and, "make this like the Beatles, damnit!" (did the guys in the crowd have to scream like girls, too :laugh3:?).

 

And "HOT IN HERRE"! Oh, my gosh...got a big ol' goofy grin on my face at that (and of course I wanted him to actually act on the words of the song, but sadly, it wasn't to be). Oh, Chris, you adorable, goofy, silly tease of a man, you...:heart:. *Shakes head, chuckles*

 

(I bet it WAS "hot in here" for him, the way he was sweating up on stage there. Good lord :p)

 

I like Row's comment about "little piano stools with blond hair" :laugh3:, and "Clocks"-ah, yes. I don't care how many times I've heard that song over the years, I still love it. I'm always playing "air piano", so to speak, and tapping my feet and all that good stuff. If I ever get an actual piano someday it's my goal to learn that song. Such a fantastic classic from them.

 

Also, Row's mention of guitar makes me think-did anyone else find it weird to see Chris holding a guitar that WASN'T splashed all over with bright colors :p? It kinda took a second for me to get used to that.

 

Think that's kinda the biggies for me from this one. Pretty good show! Short, but I quite enjoyed it all the same.

First thing: A rush of blood to the head live ♥ no words...I just love the song so...

 

After this I have to say: I really love Chris, always, but in this gig he lost to Jonny. I :dazzled: all the time on him! He was so cute! I wanted to hug him! [i always say to my best friend he looks a lot like this young Jonny :D]

 

I loved this version of Yellow and the way Chris jumped.

 

The way they were not really confident on the stage [well, compare to now of course] was really nice.

 

I also liked that Chris didn't smash his guitar on the end of God put a smile on your face :laugh3: I don't know why I really hate this thing.

Dear Lord Chris is hot on this one! :bomb: I was dazzled during the whole thing :dazzled:

 

Great vocal crowd.

I especially loved One I love (HOTTEST of the gig),The Scientist, Clocks, Everything's not lost (it's a tie with One I love in the HOTTEST of the gig with a contest, with the "It's getting hot in here" part :P)

I'm personally really excited to see that Viva gig. Any Viva era live clips I've seen have always looked so entertaining, so it'd be fun to see an entire concert.

Nice gig, watched the YT version. Loved Politik, that song is brillant here. Forget how good it is as an opener.

 

Trouble and Chris hits the wrong key, and he laughs. One thing about hitting the wrong key, you can hear it and it's so loud. Poor Chris.

 

Chris has a British accent. :lol:

 

A Rush Of Blood To The Head, love that song so much. I've rarely watched it live, except on the Tour Diary. :shame: It's great live.

 

Yellow is still to this day very magical and yes Chris's jumping. :)Crowd rocked during Yellow, the whole gig the crowd was excellent.

 

The hard rock version of God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, it goes this far back.

 

The guys are brillant as musicans, they are focused and that concert flowed well, each song into the next. Chris's singing is purely something, his singing is passionate. The One I love, is too much for my eyes and ears. :heart: It reminds me of the Live DVD, and if this in on DVD I'd buy it. Thanx, awesome awesome concert. Sorry. didn't watch this sooner. :)

I think we'd all quite like to journey back to some of the earlier years and see them live then.. I know I would. Shame is I probably wouldn't have appreciated it then.. oh well, we can do it all retrospectively instead. :D
