Chris had a great banter going on with the crowd. Agreed on the "talk more" sign and such. I also liked the chat with the crowd about R.E.M. (it's sort of oddly comforting to know that even the biggest bands in the world can't always get to see THEIR favorite artists, either :p). And describing people's looks in the crowd, too, and complimenting that one person on their voice-man, if he'd made a comment of that sort to me...ohhhhh, my lord...

 

And the talk about taking off one's jacket-as I said in the "Chris thread", he does NOT need to ask permission about that. Ever :lol:. He looked SO good at this gig-EYES, ahhh, and I particularly liked it when he was up and moving about. Also, Guy looked particularly good as well.

 

As for the actual songs: "Strawberry Swing" really made me happy. I just adore that song, it's one of my absolute favorites off of Viva La Vida. And "Death And All His Friends" was lovely to hear, too, as was "Lovers In Japan"-that song sounds particularly great live. Thrilled to hear "Trouble", too, that has always been one of my all time favorite Coldplay songs.

 

"Chinese Sleep Chant" REALLY made me want to hear "Yes", but I absolutely love how they segued into "God Put A Smile..." from there. Jonny's guitar work on that song in particular was incredible. And the multiple drums during "Lost" were fun as well.

 

And the big hit songs...well, they were just fantastic. I can't wait to be a part of those sorts of big moments in August.

late as usual but anyway :D I got to see the gig only this afternoon..I agree with all what you have said about Chris, he was so cute :)

 

I have to say something first; I really miss everything about the Viva era..The artwork, the songs, the colored instruments in the viva style, the outfits & the normal shoes..Practically everything..It was magical!! & though I don't like reminescence but ..well..I am really getting bored of their MX outfits.though I liked them at first but nowthey look so ridiculous :embarrassed:

 

Back to the gig: What a small theater it was!!! not so many ppl there & everyone must've had an excellent view, even the ppl in the balcony were so close..the stage itself looks small & stuffed with instruments & cameras that left not much space for the band to move!! Ok, how about the huge curtains? I felt they were out of place & somehow they made me scared :rolleyes: ( like someone is hiding behind them & is gonna come out any minute..I am being childish, I know:thinking:)

 

Nevertheless, what a nice set of songs:awesome: all these Viva songs combined in one concert..I was overjoyed :pleased: 9 songs to be exact & each one of them is a masterpiece in its own right + some old favourites = A very pleased fan ( that is me )

Just watched the "Then & Now" video.

 

 

Great idea to go back through the years like that. Can definitely notice how comfortable Chris felt in front of people/cameras in the early days compared to now-during the (beautiful) performance of "Shiver" I kept thinking, "You know, you can open your eyes, Chris, if you want..." :laugh3:. I don't know if it was nerves or if he was just off in another "zone" or something during that song, but seeing him with his eyes closed so much in some of those early clips amused me. But then soon enough he's off hopping about the stage and giving shoutouts to Scottish crowds and such.

 

And oh, my god, how adorable did Chris and Jonny look in that "Shiver" clip? I had a big ol' smile on my face during the song-most of it, anyway, speaking of which...

 

STOP CUTTING OFF THE SONGS! Agh. I know they let most of the songs play at least mostly, if not fully, out, but there were a few they stopped early and it was really bugging me. Particularly during "The Scientist". Leave that song be./end rant

 

Um. Anywho...so "Spies" was banned in China because of "anti-communist views"?!?! REALLY?

 

Funny, I get none of that sort of a vibe from the song. I just always thought it was a really cool, eerie little number that was/is one of my favorites off Parachutes :p. *Shrugs*

 

Also, this might sound weird, but Chris's shirt he wore in the clip of "Yellow"? I want one like it. It's cute :lol:.

Now my own review:

 

 

 

All the performances were AWESOME !!! Great, great choice.

So now a few remarks about every song.

Violet Hill: was amazing, and Chris's blue eyes were just so :bomb:

 

Shiver: lovely, lovely performance. And a great Buckin moment. At 4:24 I thought Chris was kissing Jonny :P

 

Yellow: Loved it, but the audience was a bit lame.

 

Trouble: I love Chris' shirt, the globe and the sunflowers :awesome:

 

Spies: Chris seemed to be very happy and I loved all those noises :D

 

In my Place: it was so passionate. I had the impression that Chris had watery eyes. But maybe it's just me?? I loved how he was holding the mic and the cable. ;)

 

The Scientist: nearly made me cry. How can a song be so beautiful? WOW.

 

Clocks: Will's drum hitting was very very powerful. And I forgot how much I love Chris's jacket. He wore it all the time during the AROBTTH era.

 

Wonderful World: Love Chris' improvisation :D

 

Speed of Sound: One of the few performances of that song. But very worth seeing.

 

Fix You: So emotional. And Chris' singing is ultra extra wonderful on that one.

 

Viva La Vida: Jay-Z and Ricky Gervais LOL. Cool but not the best VLV performance I think.

 

So overall: The guys looked great and they were very very good.

 

But: I have heard that at TOTP the instrumental isn't always live.

I've indeed noticed it here too (Yellow, Speed of Sound, Fix You). Am I wrong?? Chris is obviously singing live but the instruments??

Plus: There were great close-ups :dazzled:

 

For me, 48 beautiful and entertaining minutes :D

One of you mentioned whether they were actually playing live on TOTP? Generally in the 70's and early 80's you are right.. I remember seeing a Marillion performance in about 85 where the singer didn't open his mouth ONCE and pointed to a blackboard with the lyrics written on, because they were told they couldn't actually perform it live.. and he was trying to make a point. But as technology improved over the years, it became MUCH more normal to play live and I think (although I could be wrong) it was latterly, before the show was cancelled actually something bands HAD to do... So I do think Coldplay are playing live. But it doesn't rule out backing tracks of course... and there is the odd bumb note that Chris regularly throws into the piano that kinda gives the game away there. :D

 

Finally, I think what struck me by this video most by this was their development into a confident -grown up - band.. Chris' hyperactivity! LOL.. Jonnys confidence on stage, and Will.. don't you all think he is hitting the drums harder these days and MUCH much more relaxed generally?. Guy.. well Guy has always been Mr Cool.. not a lot has changed other than his hair styles! lol..

I think it overall sounded (mostly) live to me, too-but I generally forgive that when bands are on TV shows, some shows don't allow for a lot of spontaneity and such and can be restrictive about that stuff.

I think I saw this one on TV a few years back when we had the Palladia channel for a short time. Will be great to revisit it, since, like I said, it's been a while :).
