busybeeburns
Boston marathon bombing: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev charged The surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction, the US Department of Justice says. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could face the death penalty under the charges. A White House spokesman has said Mr Tsarnaev will not be treated as an "enemy combatant", as suggested by some Republican members of Congress. The twin bomb attack near the finishing line of the marathon killed three people, and injured more than 180. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured on Friday evening after a huge manhunt during which his elder brother and suspected fellow bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died. He has been unable to speak because of a throat wound, though he has reportedly responded to questions in writing. In addition to federal charges, prosecutors for the state of Massachusetts, which does not have the death penalty, could file their own. "He will not be treated as an enemy combatant," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. We will prosecute this terrorist through our civilian system of justice." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22257451

Batman
i wonder why he did it....he was just 19....there's more to life! pff, with people like him, you could give them a gun and they would shoot in your face thinking they get 5 stars from God. People are crazy, and most of the time the answers they give are relating to something religious or rassistic in cases like Boston.
busybeeburns
Reddit apologises for 'witch hunt' Social news site Reddit has issued a public apology for its coverage of the Boston bombings. Its Find Boston Bombers thread - known as a subreddit - named specific people standing near the scene as suspects. They included innocent people such as 17-year-old Salah Barhoun and missing 22-year-old Sunil Tripathi. Reddit has admitted that it helped to fuel "online witch hunts". The debacle has fuelled debate about how far such speculation should go in future. "We all need to look at what happened and make sure that in the future we do everything we can to help and not hinder crisis situations," the apology read. "Though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on Reddit fuelled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiralled into very negative consequences for innocent parties." It went on to apologise to the family of Mr Tripathi. The family had to suspend the Facebook page they had created to find him because of the amount of negative comments they received. Mr Tripathi's name trended on Twitter and numerous news sites. "We were very worried about Sunil and about each other because of how fast completely unsubstantiated claims were spreading," his sister Sangeeta Tripathi told the BBC World Service. "Our entire neighbourhood and our house were surrounded by media trucks. On my personal cellphone I got 72 phone calls between 3am and 4.30 in the morning. "We just really hope that something like what happened to our family - and it's happened to a few other people in the same media frenzy around Boston - doesn't keep happening and that we are conscious of how powerful some of our platforms are." The tragedy in Boston created a huge amount of traffic on Reddit, peaking at about 272,000 users according to Google Analytics. As well as attempting to solve the mystery of who the suspects were, Redditors - as contributors to the site are known - also organised housing for people stranded in Boston, sent pizza deliveries to police and hospitals, and organised "dog therapy" in local parks for traumatised residents. The apology concludes: "After this week, which showed the best and worst of Reddit's potential, we hope that Boston will also be where Reddit learns to be sensitive of its own power". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22263020

NumbersGirl
I'm baffled by the fact that he attended school the days afterward and gave no indication (other than maybe awkward twitter posts) that anything was out of the ordinary with him. Just got back to his life as usual. Fellow classmates had absolutely no clue.

Prince Myshkin
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/may/22/fbi-man-shot-florida-tsarnaev-brothers FBI investigates links between Tsarnaev brothers and man shot in Florida Reports link Ibragim Todashev, thought to be friend of Boston suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, to 2011 Massachusetts murder Dzhokhar, left, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev pictured before the explosions at last month's Boston Marathon. Photograph: Uncredited/AP An FBI agent shot dead a man believed to be a friend of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Djokhar Tsarnaev, during a "violent confrontation" in a Florida apartment early on Wednesday. Sources said that Ibragim Todashev, 27, "flipped out" under questioning by the federal agent and two Massachusetts police officers about his connection to the brothers who are accused of carrying out the 15 April attack that killed three people and injured more than 260. The FBI did not immediately confirm a report that Todashev, a Chechen national, was also being interrogated about a possible role in a triple murder in Massachusetts in 2011, in which a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a victim. Dave Couvertier, an FBI spokesman, said that Wednesday's shooting, at a private apartment close to Orlando's Universal Studios theme park, was under review by a team of agents sent to Florida from Washington. "Based on preliminary information … the agent along with two Massachusetts state police troopers and other law enforcement personnel were interviewing an individual in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing investigation when a violent confrontation was initiated by the individual," Couvertier said in a statement. "During the confrontation, the individual was killed and the agent sustained non-life threatening injuries." He did not confirm the suspect's name or why he was being questioned at a private residence, but Khusen Taramov, a friend of the dead man, told reporters that Todashev had been interviewed several times in recent weeks and had recently cancelled a trip to his homeland to see his parents. Taramov said Todashev, a former Boston resident, had last spoken to Tsarnaev about a month ago but that they only knew each other through their shared interest in Mixed Martial Arts and he had no connection with the attack. "They met a few times because he was a fighter and [Tsarnaev] was a boxer. They just knew each other. That's it," Mr Taramov told an Orlando news channel, WESH TV. "Me and him and my friends, we knew this was going to happen. That's why he wanted to leave the country. But he cancelled the tickets. The FBI's been pushing him, 'Don't leave, don't leave.' So he decided to stay," he said. According to WESH TV, Todashev was initially co-operative during the interview, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday at the apartment. But the channel quoted unidentified investigators who said Todashev became violent just as he was about to sign a confession to admit a role in a September 2011 murder. In that incident, three men were found at an apartment in Waltham, Massachusetts, with their throats cut and with large quantities of banknotes and marijuana strewn around. One of the victims, Brendan Mess, 25, was a close friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police in Boston four days after the Marathon bombing. A spokesman for the Middlesex County state attorney's office said it was "an open investigation" and would not comment further. Records from Florida's Orange County Sheriffs Department show that Todashev was arrested on 4 May on a charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, after a fight with two men over a parking spot at an Orlando shopping mall. According to the arrest warrant, a 35-year-old man was admitted to hospital with several teeth missing and a split upper lip, but he declined to press charges and Todashev was released. The warrant said: "By his own admission Todashev was recently a former mixed martial arts fighter. This skill puts his fighting ability way above that of a normal person." Taramov said he and Todashev were questioned for about three hours on Tuesday, about the Boston attack and about how they knew the Tsarnaev brothers. "They took me and my friend, the suspect that got killed," he said. "They were talking to us, both of us, right? And they said they need him for a little more, for a couple more hours, and I left, and they told me they're going to bring him back. They never brought him back." He added that his friend had "felt inside he was going to get shot" by the FBI. John Miller, a former assistant director of the FBI, now a CBS news analyst, said agents went to the apartment after midnight to question Todashev further about the cancelled Chechnya trip. "He had been interviewed along with a number of other people in the apartment complex, but the interest in him was higher because of a couple of factors: he was in contact with Tamerlan Tsarnaev, he had been to Boston to visit him, and he was planning a trip to Chechnya," Miller said. Tsarnaev, whose father was from Chechnya, was killed in a shootout with police in Boston on 18 April, soon after the shooting death of Sean Collier, a police officer attached to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tsarnaev's younger brother Dzhokhar, 19, was captured 24 hours later after a day-long operation that brought the city to a standstill. He could face the death penalty, on federal murder charges. Tash
Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev indicted Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been indicted on charges of killing four people and using a weapon of mass destruction. The 19-year-old faces 30 charges linked to the 15 April blasts, which killed three and injured more than 260 others. A fourth victim, a policeman, was shot dead by him and his brother during the hunt for them, say federal prosecutors. Seventeen charges could bring life in prison or even the death penalty, US prosecutors said. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan, was killed in a shoot-out with police days after the twin blasts. The explosives were described as pressure-cooker bombs, packed with shrapnel. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was injured in that gun battle and has been held in a prison hospital near Boston since his capture on 19 April. The brothers are from a family of ethnic Chechen Muslims from Russia and had been living in the US for about a decade. link
busybeeburns
Rolling Stone's Boston bomb suspect cover sparks outrage More than 5,000 people have left angry comments on Rolling Stone's Facebook page Rolling Stone's Boston bomb suspect cover sparks outrage A Rolling Stone magazine cover featuring Boston bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has caused outrage online. Thousands of people posted on social media networks calling it "tasteless" and "disgusting". Tsarnaev, 19, who pleaded not guilty to all charges in connection to the bombings in April, is profiled in the forthcoming issue. The image, which Tsarnaev posted online himself, has also featured on the front page of the New York Times. "What a disgrace, trying to make [Tsarnaev] look like a rock star. Horrible," Steve Simon posted on Rolling Stone's Facebook page, where more than 5,400 people have commented in the 12 hours since the cover was revealed online. On Twitter people said the picture of Tsarnaev looked similar to an old cover featuring singer Jim Morrison of The Doors. Singer Pink retweeted a message by radio presenter Ted Stryker who wrote: "Horrible, classless, stupid choice Rolling Stone. It's not smart or edgy. Very disappointed." Boston punk band Dropkick Murphys, who recently donated $300,000 (£197,000) to victims of the bombings, also expressed their anger. "Rolling Stone you should be ashamed," the band tweeted. "How about one of the courageous victims on your cover instead of this loser scum bag!" Janet Reitman, Rolling Stone's contributing editor, spent two months interviewing Tsarnaev's friends and family as the basis of the article. Mr Tsarnaev, faces 30 counts of using a weapon of mass destruction in the two 15 April blasts that killed three, including an eight-year-old boy. More than 260 people were injured at the Boston Marathon when two pressure cooker bombs packed with nails, ball bearings and other shrapnel were detonated at the finish line. It was the worst mass-casualty attack on US soil since 9/11. Prosecutors could press for the death penalty for 17 counts. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23340329

NumbersGirl
If they want to have an article about him that's fine and dandy, but his face being plastered on the cover is pretty close to the top of the wtfery list. Some retailers have already decided not to sell the magazine. I'm sure Willie Nelson, Jay-Z, Robin Thicke and Gary Clark Jr. are thrilled to see their names framing the side of that guy's face.
