I would like to see more rock Coldplay , these days I watched Viva Live concert tour and I enjoyed that Coldplay style.

Um... Violet Hill, 42, DAAHF, Cemeteries of London, even Yes are all pretty damn close to rock. I do get what you mean. AROBTTH is definitely closest to organic rock from a 4 piece band. But also keep in mind that AROBTTH has a shit ton of ballads while Viva has only one ballad that is like 2 minutes long. TBH Coldplay has never been a true straight rock band, they always have pop in there and other genres mixed in.

 

Also I think he meant live, which imo Viva era had them in their best live form, especially in changing up the old songs.

I agree, even MX has Major Minus in it (which is pretty good live). Every Coldplay album is a mixed bag. It's just that the last two releases had become more poppier and mainstream compare to their predecessors.

Thats pretty objective IMO but to each there own. I personally love Viva for the diversity of the sound but I also love AROBTTH so I will never diss the album. They are both beautiful.

I'm hoping of AHFOD to have the ballads of Parachutes, the rock of AROBTTH, the epicness of VLVODAAHF and also the joy of MX. A mix of these albums would be great...

I love the maturity and complexity of these songs. However is that an independent Coldplay or a Coldplay out there to prove something. LP7 will sound anything that will be popular in 2015 mixed with other random things they are inspired by, after LP7 we could talk about proper change in coldplay

Alot of their bsides from the previous era's sound really diffrent from what was put on the actual albums.

Also GS didnt really sound mainstream. Yes it has catchy songs, but it arent (just) catchy songs, there's a art to it, a kind of art i dont hear much in 'so called' 'mainstream albums'. The most mainstream track on the album is ofcourse ASFOS, but thats just to sell the album.

^It is harder to classify albums as mainstream than singles because even the most popular artist will have a out of the ordinary track. That said, I gotta agree with Kingzilla. I totally agree that GS is very artful and a bit more mature than most pop albums out there, but to me it was far more accessible through and through than all other Coldplay albums. Despite the beautiful and cool production choices made, AIMH, Magic, Ink, True Love, AA, Oceans, ASFOS,O...all of them are not as challenging or deep in my opinion as Viva. They also all are very cleanly produced, pure and lovely. Now I realize a lot of that was intentional, but I personally miss some of the left turns of Viva and even MX when songs got really dirty or completely switched and swam in atmosphere.

 

I don't mean to say Viva is that much better than GS, they are different albums and I love the atmosphere of GS, I just think it could have been less mainstream sounding and I would have liked it on Viva's level. So I want to see them ditch the pop music formula a little bit too. I still want songs like Magic and Ink, but I would love for them to make those songs and really step outside the box and strive for creativity to PROVE that they are the best at making pop music--I want Coldplay on par with the Beatles one day.

 

Gotta also agree with Jonny The Cake here too. I think LP7 is going to influenced by the mainstream pretty heavily with of course some alternative influences to please us fans who like their darker, more challenging stuff. If AHFOD is like a brighter companion to GS then this has to be true. I think we can all just hope that throughout the recording process they have been influenced by far more than Top 40 singles. I personally hope for more inspiration from Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Folk Music, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, Blur etc. though they have been there done that (better than Ariana Grande, One Direction, and Ed Sheeran imo)

That would be amazing, in my opinion. I think they would really need to work their butts off to somehow do that.

Well if they're heading for the Parachutes-esque style they just need to get rid of all the expensive fancy schmancy effect laden production stuff and throw all of their lazer harps and whatever the frick they've else got out of the window :wacko:

I still believe the most realistic prediction is MX 2.0, except with a lot more snyth and Will will only use electronic drums.

 

I just want them to get this whole thing out their system and over with. Then a hiatus (which is long overdue) should be in order. After a few years they could come up with something more reminiscent of Coldplay circa 2003.

thats what i think its going to happen, they either go fully experimental and start doing crazy shit like a spell a rebel yell, chinese sleep chant or go back to a 2003 sound, but that will happen with LP8, not LP7. I hate the idea of a long hiatus because right now they are NOT on hiatus and we ear about them every 5 months or so, imagine what it would be like during a proper hiatus, but if they need to find inspiration again then so be it.

A long hiatus would be very beneficial at this point in their career. If it results in a positive step toward creating a groundbreaking album I'm prepared to wait 5 or 6 years. They need to take a step back and really think about what they have and haven't achieved. They need to think about their legacy and how they'll be remembered. About what they could have been and what they are.

I agree though if we listen again to interviews (of Chris Martin) the band is all fired up at the moment. I think the main question that they need to ask themselves after LP7 is "do they really need to ignore critics and just do what they enjoy the most?". I think it will be beneficial for them to listen to some critics again and start challenging their talent more as individuals and as a band (not just learning new stuff and fusing it with their current sound or drawing inspiration to what is relevant in terms of style in the music industry).

A possible sub question: "what do they mean of being relevant?". Is it to adapt to the current genre and style or to create music that would left critics wondering how they pulled it up (even Pitchfork media).
