Viva la vida was such a great era

Whenever I feel down I binge watch live Coldplay performances and the Viva Era (in my opinion) is the absolute best. When else can you see Coldplay swap through so many instruments or put new spins on songs. I love the acoustic yellow with Will on guitar and Guy on mandolin, or the dancy/trippy mash up of GPASUYF and Talk! Their I Hear Radio Session with the Michael Jackson cover and stripped down approach. Or how about the amazing Viva era videos? Not a bad one in the bunch. If they can beat Strawberry Swing I will be very surprised. Sure their other tours of past were way more rockin (Twisted Logic) or in the future all out light shows (MX) but in Viva they sure experimented with sounds for amazing results.

Indeed - great songs, great lyrics, great artistry, great live.

I think the VLV era had the most charming live era - with the in-the-audience covers and reworks of old songs (though MX still has some of that spirit). This was the last era to really have B-sides and unreleased songs still being performed. The GS era has been painfully rehearsed and repetitive in the live scene.

I love Viva and I love the Viva era and I love everything about it :awesome:

It was so brilliant :dazzled:

The songs, the instruments, the outfits, the feeling of the concerts, EVERYTHING :freak:

I could fanboy about Viva for much longer but I don't feel like going on haha

Coldplay was all over the German TV during that time, it was amazing. Interviews, Music video marathons, live concerts, EVERYTHING. And the newspaper, don't get me started on the newspapers! :laugh3: It was hard not to get Coldplay shoved in your face on a daily basis back then

I think it was so fantastic because the album had so many life-approving songs, and everybody that listened to the single Viva La Vida just went nuts  I mean, the song IS good, no matter how many people think it's stolen or whatever.

And the live shows... it was so great! Of course, the MX tour was kind of the same in terms of colours/epicness, but VIVA was, as MosesTheMarshmallow already said:

with the in-the-audience covers and reworks of old songs (...) This was the last era to really have B-sides and unreleased songs still being performed. The GS era has been painfully rehearsed and repetitive in the live scene.

First of all the funny stage costumes, the whole design was like a (fond) slap in the face. I mean, compare X&Y Coldplay with VIVA Coldplay and you see the difference. Back then you went like "wOAH what happened to them!? What's with all the colours? wAIT ARE THEY'RE BLASTING BUTTERFLIES ON THEIR CONCERTS?!" :laugh3:

The album fitted perfectly to the time of year it was released (summer) and you just couldn't wait to get to experience that colourful feeling of the album on one of their concerts.

Just thinking about it makes me all nostalgic :wacky:

:bigcry:

I have been quite nostalgic of that era as well lately. I think summer is doing that to us.

The album was wonderful, different, it suddenly had that taste of freedom. And the live shows were super long, and they were giving LRLRL, and the tour itself was super long and super exotic but with the puppets and R#42 it felt like we were still very much connected to all of it. For me, it was the moment where they really started becoming special.

Oh goodness it was good. I've only been to two but both were in Viva. I got to hear the Prospekt's March songs live because it was just after those had been released, and was present for this (though was on the wrong side of the stage to join unfortunately)

Wonderful songs and wonderful art, the painted pieces we found, dat experimentation, I really enjoy it. I don't regret not seeing them live that many times because I have those quality experiences instead.

(I may be biased because I was still in fangirl stage at this time. Even if I did make myself sick of VLV and went on a not liking it stage because 'lyrics not pursonul', which I am thankfully through)

Reminder that songs like these are the bomb (even if the video is super quirks)

The music videos were spot on then. I love all of it. The band seemed to be more connected to the fans back then too they went out of there way and did really special stuff I can't think of anything for GS that they did other than the hidden lyrics around the world.

Certainly the best promoted tour ever, everything looked and worked great, straight from the start (free Violet Hill promo), videos, promos, interviews, flashing lights, butterflies, typography, the huge and the little songs, the uniforms, incredible visuals, incredible concerts, balloons, acoustic versions of old and new songs, b and c-stage, lyrics, just about everything you can think of. Even Chris' incredible haircut (or a lack of thereof).

A wonderful era which ended with Spanish Rain and eventually gave us Christmas Lights!

Gosh, it was beautiful. I went to two concerts in that time and it was really really good.

i agree it was a golden era. but just to level things out from not-so-fans' perspective (obviously i'm a fan!), viva era was an era that was so hyped up and promoted, like mentioned before, it as hard to escape. you can't do that same promotional level every era or people would get fed up quicker.

i'm talking about just one aspect here. we all loved it to the max. but for the casual listener, it may not have been a good thing :)
