AMDB9
I think the song would be much more pleasurable to listen to if they'd cut out the bland soulless eletronic beats and replace them with some rich, actual instruments including instrumental. Yes! I was gonna say they could keep the bland, soulless beats to make it EDM but just add some bass onto it or something!

tekjansen505
I'll be honest, It takes me an hour to drive to work and I literally listened to it about 90% of that hour today. I bought it as soon as it came out and that was about 8am here :D So with that being said, I generally do like kind of mindless dance-pop, and while I don't know many songs by The Chainsmokers, it pretty much sounds exactly what I think a Chainsmokers song would sound like. I do love Chris' vocals on it, and I just wish that this song was a remix to a Coldplay song that featured more of Jonny, a less electronic drum beat, and I guess a more noticeable bass line. The chorus (?) is a bit bland. What I'm getting at is that... I do actually really like the song, though it sounds like I don't from what I've written up there I'm a sucker for anything that sounds like summer, considering it's coming to an end here in Australia so I'm clinging onto it with songs with similar beats

Yes the song misses a lot of a strong solid musical piece. There are a lot of gaps to fill. Would love to have an acapella of the song and have someone else create an orchestral instrumental for it =D

Lol, that would be cool but we'd be shouted and cheered over by the band's new target audience.

lennyrott1
@TheSavage_ I would hope that you are right, but I have to say I'm more pessimistic and wouldn't be so sure about that...after all, they (especially Chris) have said time and again the music they make reflects who they are now and (bewilderingly and sadly) where they always wanted to be. And this is who they currently are, to the chagrin of many who loved their old music. But I think at least the latter statement is not true - I'm pretty sure the four people who wrote Parachutes, AROBTTH and X&Y would have laughed at their current output back then and not aspired to do that. It's not like they had a secret plan "Let's get famous by doing meaningful, emotional music so that we can then play EDM and synthpop for the rest of our lives". Or maybe, they had that plan and just have been pretending to us for 10 years. LOL, no. This is the source of my pessimism as well. When Chris says "Up&Up" is our career defining song, I am heartened because I have come to think its a masterpiece of rock/pop. But if AHFOD, their weakest album as a whole, is where they want to be, I'm scratching my head. It is such a hodge-podge of genres. I can't imagine why other than Chris legitimately wants to make music that is MORE universal. But the Chainsmokers? I don't know... I am trying to imagine myself in their shoes: You have made 7 great records. You have dabbled in rock, hip-hop, electronica, pop, alternative, shoegaze, folk. You've collaborated with rock legends and pop sensations alike. You're a millionaire with kids approaching their teens...Maybe you don't want to spend two years tirelessly producing another AROBTTH or Viva. What's in it for you? You're so experienced and have so many resources that writing a song with the Chainsmokers would take a week or less and earn you tons of publicity. They have always said their music is what is good live, and frankly HFTW and ASFOS, songs I dislike in the studio, are great fun at a show, so that probably has helped convinces Guy and Will to just play along. SJLT was really fun at the Brits honestly, and Will's added drumming was great. It looked like the Chainsmokers were jealous Coldplay was slaying their song haha. Who knows. Maybe they did it out of sympathy, or they see the brash immaturity of their old selves in those guys and figured "why not?"

And also, I'm not saying that what they did is bad, it's how things turned out. If they really like it, I'm all up for it. Thinking about it again, my analogy was quite weird and doesn't really fit. But I do think that with an end of a chapter, everything is possible right now.
lennyrott1
^And hopefully they prove us pessimists wrong on KEP... But just to throw more fuel to the fire, here is a summary of the music media's response to the track after I read a bunch of reviews this morning: Woe the apocalypse: The sappy Coldplay bros team up with the terrible Chainsmokers bros to make a ridiculous track. Its cute in a bad way: The lyrics are absolutely ridiculous and drops generic as can be, sounds like "Roses"Its okay: We all agree we don't like either group, but admit it, the song is catchy. Why Coldplay: We have defended you guys in the past but this is the last straw. Sounds a lot like the forums here. I saw one positive review. Critics were all slightly nice to the earnestness of AHFOD, but here they are back in full form bashing Coldplay. I kind of feel bad for them, but I also think they have the hate coming.... Captain Crieff
Ugh. I was pretty pissed off last night when it came out and this song was at least part of the reason but I thought 'maybe my desire to whine/rant about it will be over by tomorrow' well, it isn't. I hate the fact that I sound like a whiny oldplayer now but okay rather genuine question: can anyone tell me what makes this song any better than other Chainsmokers songs except for Jonny's guitar at the end? Some of the lyrics maybe? But surely not the "Some fairytale bliss, Just something I can turn to, Somebody I can kiss"-part I hope (wooooow, it rhymes!) It just sounds so... weak to me. mediocre/silly lyrics, a trashy EDM drop that ruines the whole chorus, I think even some autotuney-sounds on the vocals (I'm by no means an expert here so maybe that's just my ears) and then at the end there's Jonny with an amazing and credible attempt at saving everything but it's not enough. I'm not even expecting Coldplay to make another Politik or Death and All His Friends, they've changed and that's fine, simple as that. But to make a cheap, forgettable (though that sounds off, I wish it could get it out of my head lol) EDM hit with two stupid guys who seem to be doing what they do just to bang girls and be famous, that's just so disappointing. I hate that I'm posting this. Anyway, it's just a song I'm not going to waste more words over it.

While I strongly disagree with the labeling of us Oldplayers as "whiny", I agree with the rest of your post. Today I woke up, the song was stuck in my ears and I hated it. Listened to it again, the catchiness of the melody positively impressed me yesterday evening but the more I listen to it, the cheaper it sounds to me. And so sad to see that good Jonny solo wasted on this piece of EDM-trash.

You'd expect me to be infuriated but I'm totally okay with it. We've been down this path for almost 10 years now and I could not care less. It's taken its toll on my psyche to tell the truth. A terrible song by a now terrible band. Let's move on, forget about Coldplay and this place and check back once any new material is released. I heard this piece of trash then decided to go for a run and listen to some new Depeche Mode and Radiohead which was great! I'll forevermore be thankful to Coldplay for igniting the hunger inside me again to actively seek out and find music that is truly great.

"terrible band" because they released some songs you don't like? come on dude, that's ridiculous. I've said it before and i'll continue to say it again, the band are just as talented and experienced at making music than they were in the late 90's. Captain Crieff
Let's move on, forget about Coldplay and this place and check back once any new material is released. I can't though. I can't just wipe them out of my life (even though I never really liked the last 2 albums and don't listen to their music as much as I used to) and forgetting about this place is even more impossible for me haha I'm just going to try to ignore the existence of this song (which will be hard since it's everywhere but oh well) edit: and I disagree that they're a terrible band now, it's just a change of direction (this song is an exception, it's inspirationless trash)
