Daffy
I have a feeling Jonny's going to be even better in this album... Every single album he sounds better for some reason...
MosesTheMarshmallow
Controversial opinion: most of Oldplay is far more lyrically homogenous compared to new songs. Most of Parachutes through AROBTTH is the same "I love you, I'm sorry" with maybe Clocks, GPASUYF, and a couple of the oddball AROBTTH songs as exceptions (eg title track, A Whisper). Whereas VLV delves into a lot of politics and other storylines, MX is all over the place in an interesting way, GS is slightly more homogenous again, but AHFOD really has a bit of everything! I have a feeling Jonny's going to be even better in this album... Every single album he sounds better for some reason... With the exception of Army of One/X Marks the Spot, Jonny has GREAT features on AHFOD. Up&Up's solos (though 1 is Noel Gallagher) are amazing, AHFOD has great guitar lines, and AOAL is built entirely around a Jonny riff. What's not to like in this album from a guitar standpoint!

Personally, I feel that Clocks is a love song... If you listen to the songs in order of the album, I see it like this: In My Place (He makes a mistake and is pushed away from his love,)then GPASUYF (he gains self-confidence that he doesn't need his love, and is slowly spiraling down emotionally,) then The Scientist, (he tries to apologize,) and then Clocks (Explaining what he was saying in the apology, followed by "And nothing else compares/Home, home, where I wanted to go," where his apology gets accepted and he stays with his love,) then Daylight afterwards (he says he's nothing in the dark, referencing his state in The Scientist and Clocks, and his love brought him back out by accepting his apology.) Politik in the beginning is sorta a gateway to see the relationship's current problems as the album starts (he wants time for them to kiss, showing they are already drifting apart a bit, and he says "give me strength, reserve control," because he felt his love had too much power over him and he wanted that to be resolved, further proven by "Open up your eyes/And give me love over, love over, love over this") It's kind of like an alternate timeline of Parachutes... Or maybe the first 3 albums are different perspectives of the relationship and how it broke apart and/or joined together...
lennyrott1
I've been thinking of it as this, three options, all seem equally likely at this point: 1. They do Oldplay sounding music. No features, no pop producers, just them going back to their old indie post-britpop, alt-lite sound. Maybe they release some old demos or an album that never came through as part of this process. 2. They continue down the path of pop-inspired music of the last two albums. Overall it's fine, there is some dull pop and some exciting new ideas, but like GS or AHFOD the album is divisive because it tried to please everyone. 3. They go completely in a fresh alternative direction. Maybe it's afro-beat inspired. Maybe it's a rock opera. Maybe it's symphonic and electric. Some fans hate it, but it grabs the world's attention and puts Coldplay back in the map as a serious alternative music force. My hope is #3. I wouldn't mind #1. I'd be extremely bummed if #2.

I think we will never see them willingly release old discarded tracks/demos. Chris especially seems to be the type of person that doesn't linger too much in the past and would rather work on new material than recycle old stuff. As for the new album, I don't think we will see anything resembling Parachutes but perhaps something more along the lines of MX, VLV and AHFOD. I'd love to see a more aggressive, politically charged album, maybe like a mixture between VLV and AROBTTH. Although judging on recent Coldplay it will probably be somewhat poppy. Heres hoping for something similar to MX and not AHFOD!

From the newer LPs I love Ghost Stories, especially as it contains a sound that fits good to the band's earlier period. 'Oceans' sounds nearly like a re-found Parachutes era track. I wish they would do more of that style (again). Of course there's doubt about it.

Mylo Xyloto is definitely less 'poppy' and produced as AHFOD, which I would love to see for LP8
Famous Old Painter
I remember people saying AHFoD would be a psychedelia record, or that Ghost Stories would be a return to the Oldplay sound. This looks promising but let's not jump to conclusions just yet

I think the last while Coldplay have a way of paying homage to Older fans on each release without actually ever delivering what they really promise.

Daffy
Well, I'm not sure if it's as good as Oldplay in terms of the full album, we'll see.. But Arabesque definitely was.
Reflektor!
Eno-Coldplay from 2007-2012 was better than Oldplay already, for me. And these singles are right back into those art-pop vibes. 1
Daffy
IMO X&Y was the best and they went dowhill in Viva Parachutes was so-so, I like Spies, Shiver, High Speed, and Don't Panic AROBTTH, better, I love the first 5 songs, but The Scientist was too slow, then the rest is listenable but nothing I'd purposefully listen to, I'd normally skip X&Y was amazing, only about 3 or 4 songs are meh Viva, I only find myself listening to 42, Violet Hill, Rainy Day, and without ANY doubt, Yes MX I don't listen to but I like Major Minus AHFOD I only listen to Up&Up and AOAL For this I've skipped Orphans about 200 times so I could listen to Arabesque Sadly the demos and B-Sides of AROBTTH and Viva were amazing and they never released them, and let's not forget Sweet Marianne... That is one of my favorites. But above it all, Clocks remains on top. Nothing. NOTHING. NOTHING BEATS CLOCKS. Edit: Sometimes I also listen to Viva la Vida or Lovers In Japan, but they aren't anything I' click right away, but sometimes I go to Viva when I'm happy
