I've listened to iAAM more than i should it's one of their best songs in the recent years but it was the song i was the most excited for when the album is out now I'm not that excited for the album.

Do we know for sure that Max Martin produced this? I wouldn't be surprised if he's not or his input is very minimal like Coloratura

Max is credited as the main producer in Coloratura, I know you guys want to paint him as this evil pop overlord but he isn't.

Did a quick mix of iAAM, with Chris and the piano from the acoustic version and G+J+W from the album mix. It feels more Viva-ish to me this way.  Coldplay - I am a Mountain (classicplay mix).

Ok, it´s a sweet song, that´s true, but could never get to be the "Scientist" as somebody said, because the melody is not half as good, and the lyrics are the simplest he could write. No possible comparison at all. Jonny´s moment is great but so short it makes me mad. This is what we got, and we can enjoy it, but...

It will never get to be "The Scientist" because no matter how good a song is, you guys will always find a reason to nitpick any post-Viva release. Not even "Coloratura" was enough for some.

I talked earlier about how 'Moon Music' is probably a career review of sorts, but let's not get it twisted: Coldplay referencing their own music doesn't mean that X song is supposed to be the new Y song (no pun intended). "The Scientist" portrays a failed relationship, while "All My Love" is closer to a wedding vow. Similarly, "I Am a Mountain" expresses newfound confidence, which has nothing to do with "Death and All His Friends" and its desire to break from toxic cycles.

Well the band themselves said his input was very minimal on Coloratura it's not me who said that 🤷

I don't mean to be rude, but if you really think that line doesn't mean anything, I can't trust any opinion you have on lyrics.
We can't ask for complex lyrics, and when they write a song with a powerful meaning, not be able to understand it.
No matter how much they criticise you, no matter how much pain they cause you, you just have to keep going, or in this case, keep standing. Just like a mountain. Let it rain, let all those people, or those things, cause you pain. You will always persevere. We've heard Chris insist a thousand times that we should never give up. This song is the perfect musical representation of that message. The lyrics are simple, yes, but also powerful and relatable. We can all be a mountain in the face of adversity. The song is about people or things that are hurting you, but your answer is love. That's my interpretation.
And I insist, I don't want to be rude to you. But I thought that the comment was pretty bad.

I agree on this, that particular verse means that even when everybody else is having a go at you, you must continue and go on. But in general, the lyrics are bad. You can write something powerful, meaningful and not look like this.

I don't agree at all, but I'm glad we can have different opinions while maintaining a good tone, which is sometimes difficult to see online. Thank you for understanding my message

Ok, on one hand I understand that reading someone again and again saying/writing that what one of our favorite groups does is disliked must be boring and disappointing, to say the least. On the other hand, I´m sorry, I really love the band and its honesty, but I think I´m entitled to express my respectful opinions.

And you´re wrong, after VLV there are lots of songs I really love: Hurts like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Us against the world (another example of simple lyrics but not as simple as most of today´s), Major Minus, Don´t let it break your heart, Princess of China, Midnight, Always in my head, True Love, ASFOS, Oceans, Hymn for the weekend, X marks the spot, Adventure of a lifetime, People of the Pride, Coloratura... And as you can see there are really commercial songs, aimed for the masses, but (in my opinion) they are good. And I don´t feel that lately as much as I would like to. Should I leave this forum? I don´t think so, I thing we should be able to listen and respect one another.

I know some of us come off that way but personally I think MX and EL are fantastic. GS, AHFoD and MotS could definitely be better but there are absolutely standouts like O, Birds, Infinity Sign and Coloratura. The first studio album I ever bought was X&Y as a teenager, along with ARoBttH and Parachutes in quick succession.
I never understood why people cared about music at all until I heard Speed of Sound. In hindsight, I think X&Y is pretty imperfect. Viva was the first album that came out after I became a fan. I remember being blown away by Violet Hill. Keep in mind people have a lot of nostalgia for those first four albums, like they do for a lot of different things.
It doesn’t make the new music bad. Most days I’d say Everyday Life is my favorite album ever. But they also set an alternative-sounding standard and then pivoted more towards bass and synth-driven pop as guitars faded in pop relevancy during the 2010s. It’s hard to reconcile the two halves of Coldplay, sometimes. Perhaps we set a bar for them that is unrealistic for a band that wants to stay culturally relevant vs the likes of say Nickelback who were popular around the same time but never changed their music and now most people don’t know they even still make albums.

Regardless of what they do, though, I wish them the best. ❤️

I forgot to mention any of EL songs, but anyway, I´ll always defend their right to do what they want, as long as I can keep mine to express if I like it or not.

Maybe creatively, but the lush production is his through and through. Let's give credit where credit is due.

Yeah, like the structure and skeleton of the song is where Max had minimal contribution. It's the production itself that makes the song sounds good, and that is where Max is contributing for Coloratura.

As an example, "Everyone taking aim / Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain" has no meaning and he might as well be singing 'blah blah blah' in tune with the music.

No meaning? I think the meaning is crystal clear. I find that an utterly bizarre critique. At this point people want to complain about the lyrics so they do complain about the lyrics.

Well the lyrics of iAAM aren't clever at all, the music and tone of the song are much more emotional than the lyric.

The title " I am a mountain" itself super corny

None of which has anything at all to do with the comment I was replying to. I think the specific lyric quoted quite clearly has a meaning, despite the bizarre claim to the contrary. It's a bandwagon.

Edited by Yes?

I heard IAAM and i still think its a weak song. Instrumentals are too much of what they done before.

FLIFIL and We Pray are better in my opinion.

My previous interpretation was that the song is about someone who has gone through a rough patch in a relationship and has been getting better over time, but the more myself and my friend looked into the lyrics the more we thought that the lyrics are too ambiguous to strongly suggest a meaning. There have been plenty of interpretations from people given on this thread, and our opinion on the matter is that there is an element of adding meaning to fill in the gaps left by the poor writing of the song. For context, my friend is a (rather good) songwriter for choirs and plays, and I know his opinion on this isn't being pulled out of his arse.

There are 32 lines in the song. Only 18 of them are unique lines. When we looked through the song together, the amount of lines we found that contributed to the proposed meanings on this thread was just five. Every other unique line has a flaky meaning at best. Much of the song - too much - is dedicated to describing a 'feeling', but what the feeling is god only knows, because I can't figure it out. I'm not sure perseverance counts as a feeling. Love could count, but that has nothing to do with the generally agreed upon meaning of the song.

Another issue is something I pointed out to my friend when we were calling. When reading the lyrics below, try to forget the song they're from:

"I’m really sorry for some things I said along the way
I really love you, I just didn’t like myself that day"

"Stood on a sea of pain
[...]
I'll be back on my feet again"

If the song was the length of Blackstar (the song) by David Bowie and had lyrics that told a story like Blackstar does, I could make a connection by assuming that the two are at far ends of a song that tells a detailed story. In reality, there is little connection between those two sections despite them being right next to each other. Whoever wrote the song really should have thought about that whilst putting the song together.

My suggestions to improve the song would be this:

  • Blackstar's choruses are barely connected to the rest of Blackstar's lyrics but manages to be relevant. It is a part of the Major Tom story and adds context to the 'Major Tom landing on another planet and becoming a god' part of it that is popular online. Only 15% of I Am a Mountain's lyrics contribute to the story in a meaningful way, and having three of the five lines in the chorus is quite shoddy. My suggestion would be to keep it, but have it sung only once near the end of the song. If this was applied to the current arrangement of the song this would meaning only the last chorus would remain.
  • The first verse contributes nothing to the song and is among the laziest writing of any Coldplay song. It shouldn't be in a song that is being released to the public. The first verse should be replaced with something else, and a third should be added to flesh out the song. Alternatively they could go the other way and copy DAAHF's lyrics by having a short and ambiguous (but pleasant) first verse and a smartly written chorus at the end of the song. Either way, I really don't think the current lyrics of I Am a Mountain are good enough and I would truly prefer the song on the album to be an instrumental. The chorus is overall better than the verses, but not by much. If there is an official and high-quality instrumental release it will undoubtedly be played more on my computer than the version with lyrics.

When I hear the DHL snippet of Good Feelings, I still don't understand why it hasn't been released in summer.

exactly. Makes no sense at all. GF should’ve been their second single (or first single). Not a fan of “WE PRAY”, but if they really had to release it, I’d say it’s more befitting as a third single.

That 'la la la' bit sounds even more terrible than it does live! 😨

It's cheesy but so do Coldplay themselves to an extent. Nevertheless, I will say that I love how Chris evoked elements of nature for the lyrics of this album.

Not all lyrics have to tell a story, that's not how poetry works. And as for them being ambiguous, ambiguity is not lack of meaning, but the multitude of it.

Edited by gustavothehuman

I find it weird complaining about vagueness in Coldplay lyrics because that's something that has been pointed out by critics even on the earlier albums, it's basically a fork found in the kitchen for me. Being specific and a storyteller is more of a Taylor Swift thing.

I love interpreting songs so I like the ambiguity and vagueness in the lyrics. I don't know why people are freaking out about this now like as you said, its been like this since the beginning. I think there is a bit of unintended bias and bad-faith assumptions about coldplay's new music.
