I think both albums have their fair share of filler. Looking foward to Perfect Symmetry tho.

I wouldn't really consider any Keane album tracks to be filler, tbh.

Except maybe Put It Behind You.

Also, The Iron Sea should have been the first track on UTIS, I reckon. From that straight into Atlantic would have been epic.

I can't see the "cheese" factor here. Sure, it has massive 80s influences, but the biggest influence I'm hearing throughout are the Talking Heads. And I love the Talking Heads. And now, I love when the Talking Heads influence Keane.

I mean, if it honestly sounded like Wham!, as someone said, I could understand the backlash. But when you take the Heads, Bowie, and Keane and throw it all in a blender, I don't understand the cheese factor. :laugh4: It's good! Shockingly different from any other Keane track (besides Dirrrtylicious, perhaps), but still good.

I love your profile pic! "Eating People Is Easy" :laugh3: love it :laugh3:

Well the "Wooh woohs" are definitely reminiscent of Wham!!:P

Check out "Bad Boys".;)

I hate it! :bigcry:

and I used to love Keane... hope the album will be better

this new song is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad! Talk about a change for the worse.

Spiralling WAY DOWN!

Put It Behind You is, and always has been, rubbish.

"Did you want to be the PRESIdent- did you want to start a FAMily, did you want to be FAMous?"

keane are officially dead to me.

If I want to listen to music like this, Kylie minogue is still out there.

that's what this reminds me of. I hope they're not going to lycra up for the video.

The song is alright. But it's too popish. I hope the rest of the album is better.

Yea i didnt like that part of the song.I thought that was a little cheesy.

Does eveyone on this MB understand that an album contains usually between 10 - 12 tracks?

Spiralling is JUST ONE TRACK OF MANY.

Seriously, I love this forum more than any other, but have been shocked in the last 24 hours by the complete collapse in intelligence that a lot of posters seem to have suffered judging by some of the replies in this thread.

Keane have already said previously that the album is extremely varied and a lot bolder in their musical choices. Yet other tracks, such as "Again And Again", are much more in vein with "Hopes and Fears".

I don't want to listen to "Hopes and Fears Version 2". I already got the first copy thanks. U2 have been masters of re-invention, and have survived because of it. "Achtung Baby" is a hard first listen after "Joshua Tree" and "Rattle and Hum" - but you can guess which of those albums I still come back to now.

What I find most annoying about all this is Coldplay's new album. I like Coldplay, I like the new album - but to me its just become "another" Coldplay album - its background music for so many people. "Lost", "Lovers in Japan" and "Viva La Vida" are gonna be lost in a blur of TV breakups and 30 second commercials. I mean the new video for "Viva La Vida" (not the Depeche Mode re-enactment one) looks like a TV commercial!

I like Coldplay, but I don't want Keane to become a band that people put on in the background when they have their parents over. Coldplay are so much better than that. Keane need to make music that they are interested in, music that is often challenging, interesting and maybe sometimes I don't like - and maybe doesn't sell a lot.

I expected the last 5 - 10 pages of mostly nonsense from an Oasis or Kasabian forum. From a brilliant Coldplay forum though? Never, I would have thought you people of all people would understand what its like watching a band fighting to save their musical souls before they're pushed into the abyss, forever stuck in a Ford Mondeo or the shelves of Walmart and Tesco.

Sorry for the rant, in summary, cut the band some slack and wait and see if you hate ALL the tracks on the new album.

lol, but I presonally like it, it's not the Keane we know and love but just imagine it's another band, because it's a good song, and they have already said that there are loads more traditional Keane songs on their album!

I'm not sure if i like Spiralling or not yet. I don't hate it but it's just so.. strange and un-Keane like

I fooking love the fact that it's so un-Keane and that it's "out there" and different.

100% Agree

See, that bit just shows more of the Talking Heads influence that I love. Listen to Once in a Lifetime by the Heads and you'll see where I'm coming from.

And I also relish the un-Keaneness of the track. I told my friend Keane came out with a new single yesterday to which he replied something along the lines of, "More music to put me to sleep." And then he listened to it, couldn't believe it was Keane, and liked it. While this may alienate some hardcore members of Keane's fanbase, I think it'll also pull a lot of new people in who never gave Keane a chance before.

They're on Ben Jones tomorrow.

The song is alright, I'm sure I'll like it more in time...what is their better album?

See I agree with most of your points. I too am not sure why some people are so vehemently opposed to the song. Stuff takes time to sink in, and also one song doesn't indicate all the other. Violet Hill certainly wasn't indicative of Viva la Vida, was it?

I do have to somewhat break of from you in some respects though. I've never been the type of person who gives much credence to the tortured artist. Say what you want about the importance of critical acclaim, but even the best bands and the one's most critically acclaimed once got panned - and likely pretty bad too (Radiohead anyone). So the idea that Keane need to become a band like that is retarded, because that is what your kind of suggesting in your having them not sell a lot of music - ala Radiohead in most cases (and I mean comparing Radiohead to bigger bands, because obviously they sell a lot). I agree music that is challenging is often rewarding, but Coldplay are a great band without having to be that pretentious we're-doing-this-because-of-us thing.

Calling Coldplay background music undermines how interesting there music has become. To call it that implies a musical snobbery. Background music is devoid of emotion and soul - that's not Coldplay, and it never will be.

Keane are the real backgroung music not Coldplay. Keane are shit and have nothing on Coldplay. Stop calling Coldplay's music rubbish because Keane have just given their new song Spiralling out and its shit and I would never even think about putting their music in the background, its that shit. Fuck Keane.

^^^^^

The new song takes some time to grow. Very '80's. I happen to love the '80's so that is a good thing. Reminds me of the Human League, early Simple Minds and other stuff of that era. A brave move by the band, it might just work. Where are my glitter-balls and disco outfits?

Woah dude, I'm not sure if those "^^^^^" are for me, but I never said Coldplay was shit, I was quoting someone, and they never said Coldplay was shit either. So calm the fuck down.

Keane's not shit. Coldplays not shit. I like Coldplay more. Some like Keane more. Who cares.
