Robert Kahre, who owns numerous construction businesses in Las Vegas, is standing trial on 57 counts of income tax evasion, tax fraud and criminal conspiracy. If convicted on most counts, he could live out his life in prison. But attorney William Cohan paints Kahre as an American "hero" who believes his payroll system helped keep the U.S. monetary system sound, and was also a form of legal tax avoidance. A self-made entrepreneur, Kahre, 48, paid his workers in gold and silver coin, and said they could go by the coins' face value -- rather than the much higher market value of their precious metal content -- for federal tax purposes. He did not withhold taxes from the…

The Happy Gilmore tee shot tested Sport Science recently tested to see whether professional golfer Padraig Harrington could drive the ball further than normal by employing a Happy Gilmore swing. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wguFY0DDoAU&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - Sport Science Happy Gilmore[/ame] The good stuff doesn't get going until around 3:00. The running swing technique increased Harrington's distance by an average of 30 yards but his accuracy suffered. The split-screen view of his stationary and running swings is amazing...it's the same swing. http://kottke.org/09/04/the-happy-gilmore-tee-shot-tested

Residents of 'Butt Hole Road' club together to change street's unfortunate name By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 11:24 AM on 26th May 2009 Comments (14) Add to My Stories In the end, the constant jokes were just too much to take for the long-suffering residents of Butt Hole Road. Groups of youths used to visit the street and bare their backsides for photographs while many delivery firms simply refused to believe it existed. And coachloads of amused American tourists frequently turned up to view the sign after it appeared in a US book. And so despairing households in the suburban street in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, decided that the r…

Rise of the thugettes: Quarter of ALL violent assaults in Britain are now carried out by women By Matthew Hickley Last updated at 7:37 AM on 26th May 2009 Comments (62) Add to My Stories A quarter of all violent assaults in England and Wales are now carried out by women. The shocking figures, police believe, can be put down to binge-drinking and the so-called 'ladette culture'. Two years, £500,000 and 178 pages to tell us that we want our trains to be on time and uncrowded By Martin Delgado Last updated at 8:35 AM on 24th May 2009 Comments (0) Add to My Stories It was the biggest-ever study of overcrowding on Britain’s railways, taking two years and costing the taxpayer £500,000 as commuters were secretly filmed as they struggled in to work. But last night the 178-page report for the Rail Safety and Standards Board was condemned as ‘an astonishing exercise in rehashing the blindingly obvious’ – for revealing people are happiest when trains are on time and they can sit down. Cattle truck conditions: The study fou…

I'm not sure if there is already a topic, or if this is the right place so let me know. The semi-finals are over and the final is today/tomorrow depending where you are. Who do you think will win? Who did you want to see get to the final? In the first semi I was going for Switzerland and Macedonia, but they didn't get through:( In the second I liked Serbia, but they didn't get through either.
