justtt got home! 215am!

the show was amazing. idk i wasn't really insulted by the lack of a second encore. the show was fucking incredible and it didnt need another encore to make it any better. (i agree santogold sucked too but i expect opening bands to suck so i didn't really mind. get there later if you don't want to sit through some obnoxious music!). The highlight for me was chris on piano doing the hardest part. it really was BEAUTIFUL! but no one in the crowd fucking knew it so he stopped before finishing and took a shot at the citizens of hartford saying 'it's not a big enough hit for a saturday night in hartford'. i was REALLY upset at everyone there because i was enjoying it SO MUCH. i really wanted to like go on stage and tell chris 'no i appreciate this so much please don't stop!' hahaha but he actually made fun of the connecticut/hartford fans a lot which i thought was really funny since i'm from boston. he said something like 'it's great to see you all support the biggest FRENCH band in the world'. He was refferring to themselves but probably thought half the people in the crowd didn't really know where they were from. anyway...aside from chris being his usual funny self... the rest of the music was great. i fucking FLIPPED when square one started. such a nice surprise! the end of it with chris and piano was bone chilling. oh and i was on the end of my aisle on floor so when they ran by to go into the stands for the acoustic section i touched ALL FOUR of them! a nice pat on chris's sweaty back was probably the highlight for me! hahahaha... politik was incredible. so much energy and so much emotion in the closing piano solo. the confetti on lovers in japan was even better than i imagined. i was disappointed because at first none was near me at all and i was in the middle of the floor and then after the second refrain just GALLONS of it started pouring out and i got a ton of it! it looked beautiful in the lights and it like glowed in the dark! life in techinicolor was a pretty good opener. not as good as politik and sqaure one but i was so excited that i did get a little teary eyed during it. the only points where there seemed to be low energy were yes and chinese sleep chant. at the end of yes they had a little jam sesh which pretty much saved the song and pumped everyone up before 42. crowd was great on in my place and fix you. but not too many knew the new songs. strawberry swing really took me by surprise. I haven't been listening to it at all lately and i wasn't particularly looking forward to it but it ended up being one of my favs. death and all his friends was an AMAZING closer!!! seriously it was so good. chris's piano part is one of the best on ANY song theyve ever had live and when the song picks up and the big VIVA is revealed in the back there is so much energy!! haha i know this 'review' is really out of order and crazy but i'm SO TIRED and im just talking about things as i think about them. i'm PSYCHED to see them again monday in boston and i'm expecting it to be even better!

Haha! I love your review! You are so excited! weeeeeeee!

I like that u pointed out how the big VIVA unfurls during DAAHF. I thought that worked really well too- very dramatic timing. Just makes your heart swell when you see it.

Kinda wish I was going to the Boston show now. I can't work cause I hurt my hand, so I keep thinking "Well, I could go to that one, or that one, and that one too, yep."

Glad you had so much fun. Did you scream your lungs out?

you're all sheltered and ignorant. santogold is awesome. download some stuff and listen to it. she's good. the sound was just totally out of whack cuz it was set up for coldplay, not her. her song's just didn't sound right. she's awesome though. but most of you probably can't wander outside of your safe little MOR adult alternative suburban breakup music worlds to taste a little something different. your loss.

Yeah, I think her songs are awesome.

Perhaps they just aren't as good live, or as you say, the setup is wrong for her, but on cd they are great songs. :nice:

Square One got played? aweeesome :D

Hartford Review - Outstanding Night

From the point at which we parked our Blue and White VW Bus outside the stadium until the next day, it was a flurry of meeting great people, hearing outstanding music and feeling great all over! The day was grey and ugly early on but as coldplay would have it, the sky opened up right around pre-concert party time. The vibe was very cool and laid back and as a CT native, I was proud of the crowd. The band was amazing, it was a ride, I NEVER sat down the entire evening and I was happy to look behind me and see the place rockin. I can't even mention a best part or a point when the guys were on fire, it continued all night - completely amazing! Songs from Viva were jammin, they ventured into the crowd (very brave) and went back to the basics as 4 guys playing music. Yes, I like the other fans would have loved another oreo cookie, meaning if I really knew it was the last song I would have enjoyed it more - we were all hoping for another! But, I couldn't walk away any happier at all from the night.....only to find a fun surprise...before the concert we wrote in masking tape on our bus "Viva La VW", come to find a fan took some great time to rearrange the tape to read "Coldplay!" It was just fun to communicate with strangers like that. I am in withdrawl now so until next time....

I loved it, the lack of an encore didn't bother me that much, they just played 21 songs and at the rate that Chris sweats I'm surprised he didn't turn into a pile of dust  . My favorite part was the the whole thing :D, but if I had to choose it would be the Chinese Sleep Chant and the techno version of GPASUYF. I decided to get a hat, I'm very happy with it.

edit: also I usually like Santogold but the bass was too loud and the sound was all messed up, I can see why some people didn't like it

(BTW: Was anyone here wearing a yellow scarf and in section 221-ish?)

Hey! I saw that VW Bus. I thought it was cool!

Anyway, I am still totally thrilled about last night. I feel like every time I see them they just get better and better. I wasn't even really disappointed by the lack of an encore, because the show itself was pretty long and was just really great anyway. I was on my feet and jumping and dancing and screaming during the entire show. The people next to me were sitting and I'm sure they thought I was crazy but I really couldn't care less. :D It was legitimately one of the best (if not the best) nights of my life... it ranks up there with the other times I've seen them anyway! We sat in the parking garage for like 45 minutes afterwards because for some reason all the cars were completely stopped and not moving at all, but even that was fun because people had their windows down and were playing music and everyone in the garage was singing along.

My only complaint about the night is that I was just a little to high up to get any butterfly confetti! :( I really wanted to run down to the floor and grab some after the show was over, but it would have been too crazy to go in the opposite direction of everyone trying to leave. So I'm super jealous of you guys who said you got tons. Anyone want to mail me some? Hahaha.

But of course, overall it was just an incredible night! Now all I can think about is the next time I'll be able to see them!

Concert Business Goes South

Instead of returning to Hartford, where he played to a sold-out civic center in 2006, Billy Joel struck a deal with Mohegan Sun to play 10 concerts at the casino’s much smaller arena this summer.

When asked at a July press conference why he decided to perform at Mohegan, with 10,000 seats, instead of Hartford’s civic center, with 16,000 seats, Joel paused briefly, then answered, “It’s probably the money.”

Joel’s response, which prompted laugher, may have been only part of the truth.

While Mohegan Sun guaranteed him a take comparable to playing a sold-out XL Center — formerly known as the Hartford Civic Center — there were other incentives too. And a combination of factors helps explain why the older civic center is losing out as the concert industry goes south to the state’s Native American casinos, Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

“We don’t outbid the civic center,” said Mitchell Etess, president and chief executive officer of Mohegan Sun. “We are competitive with the [XL] Center, but the artists come here for the soft reasons.”

Those reasons vary, and they depend upon what the artists desire. In Billy Joel’s case, he wanted an easy commute from his Oyster Bay, Long Island, home to Mohegan Sun, and a 10-concert series. Mohegan gladly transported the star — either by boat or helicopter — and agreed to the 10 concerts.

“For most artists, [the Mohegan Sun arena] is the smallest venue they will get to play in and achieve their financial goals,” said Etess. “Artists like to play in our new arena. We’ve tried to make acts feel very comfortable here. The [XL] Hartford Civic Center is older. The seats are further away. So they come here. Some schedule it intentionally in the middle of their concert tour. It is like a get away, and more fun.”

The former Hartford Civic Center and similar civic center venues once counted on hosting 40 to 50 concerts each year. Now they struggle to reach half that number.

In contrast, Mohegan Sun officials maintain that they have grown in just seven years to be ranked 10th in the world and 6th in the nation in number of concerts hosted. The casino has teamed with ticket search engine Live Nation and aggressively gone after the concert business, said Lynn Malerba, vice chairwoman of the Mohegan Tribe.

Foxwoods is also boosting its concert business with the opening of its 4,000-seat MGM Grand in May. Several headliners are booked to perform, including Kanye West, Celine Dion and Carrie Underwood.

Charles Steedman, senior vice president and general manager of the XL Center in Hartford, acknowledged that there are new arena models. “But what we have is a great team, great sightlines, great facility,” he said.

With Northland AEG managing the center, Steedman said he is working to add the types of amenities patrons are looking for. “We will talk to UConn, talk to Jim Koplik and look to get it done here,” he said.

But Koplik, a Connecticut concert promoter who is president of Live Nation Connecticut, doesn’t expect civic centers to recapture their former hold on the concert business.

“It is very hard to sell tickets at the [XL] Center,” said Koplik, noting that ticket prices are generally higher at Mohegan. “It is easier to sell 100,000 tickets at Mohegan than 60,000 at the civic center.

“I think the [Hartford] civic center can have eight to 10 concerts a year. Then they have to figure out other ways to make income,” he said.

Koplik continues to book concerts at the XL Center — including the band Coldplay in August — and has booked 21 concerts in Live Nation’s New England Dodge Music Center amphitheater in Hartford’s North Meadows. But he said the only reason Coldplay landed at the civic center was because Mohegan was already booked.

Aside from the challenge of new competition from the casinos, civic centers also are contending with fundamental changes in the concert industry. Many musical artists who once relied on tours to promote album sales now rely on the Internet to tout their latest releases, sometimes offering free downloads of hit singles to fuel CD sales.

And while there are fewer musical acts on tour today, very few of them have the long-term drawing power of Billy Joel.

Joel sold $9.25 million in tickets for his 10-concert Mohegan Sun run.

If special amenities helped draw Joel, they also appeal to concert-goers. Patrons prefer venues with easy and free parking and on-site dining options.

“You can’t just expect a patron to pay $100 for a concert ticket, plop them in a seat and then treat them like [crap],” said Lawrence Lepore, general manager of The Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence. “You better give them something for the money. And it starts with parking to how they find their seats.”

The Dunk has been closed for an $80 million overhaul for the past three summers and is currently replacing the arena’s seats.

“It’s tough to sell an old building when you don’t have the amenities,” Lepore added. Although The Dunk expects to host about 17 concerts next year once renovations are complete, it doesn’t expect to repeat its heyday numbers of the 55 concerts hosted in 1984.

I still say Politik was the best part of the show...

I was a bit insulted, as a Hartford native, at his jab at the audience after playing a bit of The Hardest Part...I thought the song was excellent on piano, and I don't think lack of crowd enthusiasm was the problem, as plenty of people around me were belting out the chorus...but I heard he kind of did the same thing at an earlier show, but eventually played the second half of the song later in the set.

For a stadium rock band, they're really personable guys, that's for sure. They don't mind laughing and joking around with the audience, whereas a band like Radiohead are strictly business. Speaking of Radiohead, before playing The Scientist, Chris made a comment like, "We're the best band in the world! (loud screams from audience)...well, actually, we're about the 2nd-best band in Britain!"

I was there yesterday and it was plain AMAZING.

I had a ticket in the middle of the floor, but a girl gave me one of her extra tickets, and I was in the 5th row from the stage!!!

I'm still high from the show haha.

Basically I want to go to Boston tomorrow to see them again.

I have few videos, and pictures, which suck because my camera is a piece of crap, and my phone camera didn't capture it well, but I'll post it later.

And the confetti falling down from sky was my dream, and Coldplay made it come true!

Chris pulled from the radio show because he was sick, and there've been no encores since then. logical guess would be no encores so he doesn't over do it, and then they don't have to pull another show

i think that Chris is sick that day is a bit of a bummer!because he appeared both at etalk and MOD.and he appears to be well at toronto show that night.whenever the press and media writes something about Chris Martin i'll never care it because its a habit for them to write some or something exaggerated on him or to write something that is not related to him and create some craze in the environment all over i don't know for what reason all the misunderstandings about chris was because of the press he have.eventhough they did nice with the album the bill o reilly they wrote that they plagiurised, that's why i hate press when it comes to Chris or Coldplay.because i know how nice those guys are and how hardworking they're.
