[Coldplay Oxfam Blog] 1 in 4 at the Echo.

The capacity of the Liverpool Echo Arena is 8000 tonight. 2044 of them made the Health and Education For All pledge, in just under 3 hours, thanks to our incredible Oxfam campaigners. For many of them, it was their first time volunteering with Oxfam. That’s a pretty good first time campaigning, by any account.. 1 in 4 signed up. Wow.

Chris Martin is currently singing ‘The Hardest Part’. The volunteers effort tonight has certainly ensured that Liverpool is not the hardest part of this tour for me. I think it’s great when so many people join in. That’s like the whole floor area of the arena standing up at once, in unison, against poverty. All those people believing that governments should do more to provide people with their basic rights to good quality healthcare and education. Imagine if you just took away all the running taps, plasters, first aid workers, and hygienic cooking areas in this venue. The show probably wouldn’t happen. If nobody had access to an education, there might not even be anyone working here. But they are. Why couldn’t the same thing happen anywhere? Good quality and affordable healthcare and education are some of the things many countries’ prosperity is built on. It’s not a new idea. Oxfam believes it’s about time everyone had the same chance.

2044 people can make a lot of noise if they want to. When joined by all the tens of thousands of others, who have signed up with Oxfam on this ‘Viva’ Coldplay tour, in 2008, the noise is loud and clear. Change is possible. One person can make a big difference.

Just look at those 4 people on stage singing the last chorus of ‘Viva La Vida’. They wrote a song. Now people are singing it even when they have stopped. That’s quite a powerful thing. When people join together on a cause they can be even more powerful. That’s what governments need. They need to know that people care and want to help change the world.

Who knows.. All those people screaming for an encore in there could be the tipping point.

I can hear the volume has dipped inside. ‘Green Eyes’ is now being sung out in the arena. I still can’t quite get over 1 in 4. Incredible stuff. We only had 20 volunteers.. Imagine if we’d had 80!

Epic review Mimixxx, very thorough! :D

I felt sorry for Xabi Alonso, people should've left the poor bloke alone, loads went up and asked for photos and stuff, it was a bit cringeworthy. Him and his partner got escorted away at the end, probably to take them out the back away and avoid the crazy fans! (I'm a LFC fan myself, but don't think its right to hassle like that, I've seen him in Starbucks before and left him alone!)

Here's a couple more of my pics:

I think this was Chris in awe of the crowd during the Scientist!

Review: Coldplay, ECHO arena

IF ever there was a man who sums up the phrase “dance like there's nobody watching” it’s Chris Martin.

The Coldplay singer jigged and bounced around the ECHO arena stage last night like an over-excited puppy, clearly loving every minute.

The packed crowd responded with equal glee, singing, cheering whooping and hollering.

That’s the surprising thing about a Coldplay gig. For a band which made its name with some downright miserable lyrics (“Nobody said it was easy, no one ever said it would be this hard” anyone?), they put on a refreshingly cheerful show.

They’ve already done more than 80 gigs around the world promoting new album Viva la Vida.

It’s clear that this is arena-craft at its most refined.

As Chris pointed out, in a moment eerily reminiscent of Bruce Forsyth: “We’ve done 87 of these shows now and you could well be our number one crowd yet.”

But it seemed he meant it. “It’s so great to be back in Liverpool, our second home,” he grinned, returning to the city for the first time in four years. “This is where so many of the songs we’re playing tonight were written – in Parr Street.”

Then, as an extra nod to their stay in Liverpool, they dedicated Fix You to Scouse producer Ken Nelson who worked on them during that time on Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head.

The main thrust of the show may have been the new album, with its undoubted highlight Viva la Vida. But there was also a leisurely journey through their back-catalogue, with rousing singalonga versions of Clocks, The Scientist, Speed of Sound, In My Place and Yellow, complete with an avalanche of yellow balloons from the ceiling.

All the usual Coldplay boxes were neatly ticked – ponderous one-note bass lines, the mournful voice with its faint sense of sorrow, the lifts from minor key piano expeditions into vast, pumping rock and tunes so sweetly melancholy you just know Chris and the lads wrote them just for you.

With those songs, the band held the crowd in the palms of their hands, shrinking the 10,000-capacity arena to the size of the Parr Street bar.

They seem to be one of the few bands who’ve realised to get the audience involved – about time a band put their crowd first.

Welcome back. Let’s hope this is the first of many.

9/10

I just spent about AN HOUR now reading all the posts from the concert last night, and with Mich's absolutely splendid and detailed review, I'm not even gonna do one... Just make Mimi's words mine, as we went through all the saga together (And thank you very much for poiting out my fangirlish scream to Jonny!!! :laugh4: )

I will put up the pics in a bit. Videos will take longer but I don't have many this time... we were so close hat I just took a bazillion pictures - Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you Mimi, again, for agreeing to my crazy sneaking in plan (I must correct Mimi and say that my seat was a loooooot further then hers. I was in block D, row K!!! When she saw me a few seats from her it was already me sneaking secutiry and sitting down on Block B as if i belonged to it... :sneaky: ).

Yeah it was! I remember that now, just leaning on his arm staring at us in awe as we sang his song! :nice:

Can somebody rip this video please? It's an interview with Jonny before last night's show!

Thanks for the pictures :D

And that Jonny video is great! :stunned: I'm pretty sure we were sitting right by his family. There were loads of people with Viva stickers on just in front of us and they were going mad. I'm sure it was one of that group that shouted "Jonny Buckland" really loudly during DAAHF :D

awesome pics and your jacket looks super cool!!!!!!!

I have some pics of Will with your guys flag, I'll post them when I finish uploading.

And as I saw your friend dressed 'as Guy', I just remembered Mimi forgot to mention: I was also wearing the same outfit as him... TOTAL coincidence though, as I got dressed as 6am after trying on a bunch of other outfits just went for the comfortable one... and we only realized it halfway through the concert...
