The NME verdict on Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends -

Featured Replies

Eeeeeeeeeee! They called "Strawberry Swing" a "stomping ceilidh" and said there's some Irish celtic influences on the album.   I think I'm going to burst. Must. Hear. That. Song.

Ahh! Thanks for this! Its a good review :D

I really cannot wait to hear this. Somehow I'm really looking forward to Strawberry Swing and DAAHF now, they sound intriguing! And of course 42 still sounds epic. I like the sound of the trouble-esque opening of the song.

And 8/10 is really very good, and I liked the optimism in the article, but I kinda want to see a fairly un biased, objective review of the album. I don't think we've seen one of those yet. Either way, its sounding really promising!

I still don't feel as though we've gotten a very clear review on the music itself. This is a little better than the other reviews we've seen, though.

I'm a little troubled that this is NME's lowest score for a Coldplay album, right?

Anyway, thanks for the scans.

thank you for the review... that guy is a complete asshole, so, I think an 8 coming from him is like 12 in any other part, haha... I hate people compares them with U2 cause the real U2 died a looong loong time ago, but It does leave me waiting for the new album... I adore "viva la vida" already and I think it´s gonna be great...

no no no no Zu

It's so awesome to read these track descriptions... especially the one about Chinese Sleep Chant. It makes me want Coldplay to make their next album even more experimental, maybe with some techno influences or something... I bet if they put their minds to it they could even outdo The Crystal Method.

Previous NME Coldplay Reviews!

X & Y (2005) 9/10

A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002) 9/10

Parachutes (2000) 9/10

I sincerely hope Viva La Vida at least is better than X & Y!!! I am a little bit worried, after reading the review, of Coldplay becoming a cheap copy of U2!

If not, Coldplay is doomed to failure!!! And I will kill Brian Eno if I see him someday!!!!

CHEERS!

Whoa whoa whoa let's not get ahead of ourselves here!! The Crystal Method - wow dude, you sure are setting expectations high for Coldplay's LP5!

i think VLV will be coldplay's best album yet......NME aren't the best reviewers to be honest........Q will be the one to watch... the last 2 coldplay albums have got 5/5 in Q ...we'll jsut have 2 wait and see :D

Um, the_escapist, it got 8?

I think NME gave X&Y 9/10 because they felt they had to. Almost like "Alright, have another 9/10 but the next album better be great/different", like the whole tone of the review was based around EMI's trouble and how X&Y was good enough to bail EMI out.

If I had to give a mark out of 10 - I'd have X&Y at 6 out of 10......but that's me.

Reviewing an album of music and having one person giving a mark out of 10 can never be a completely perfect gauge on how millions of other people will feel about it.

So an 8 out of ten could very easily be a 4,5,6,7,8,9 or 10 in any one of the other millions of 'reviews' that will be made when every purchase of the album is made.

NME gave Radioheads' 'KID A' 7/10, the Gaurdian gave it 2/5 while Melody Maker gave it 1.5/5 for fucks sake..........but I think it's a truly great album and don't even want to give it an "out of ten" score.

So these "scores" don't mean too much really.....

Thank you for that !! :nice:

I almost think that NME is being more cautious with this new review. They probably got a lot of flack for praising X&Y so highly. Also, they apparently change their opinions 2-3 weeks later based on whatever everyone else thinks. I think the 8/10 is them trying to be more 'credible' as a critical source. After all, the first review for Coldplay's new album was bashed by another magazine for its incredibly high praise. Critics are going to give Coldplay a tough time by trying to ONLY see the flaws (Something Coldplay's critics have been all too keen to point out). However, in the end, I think we'll see a lot of them admitting that the new album really is something worthwhile, and a step in the right direction for the band.

hi I loVe COldPlAY

thanks for this. cool review but it desrves a 10

is it:

- "Bono is dead; long live the king."

- "(...);long live the king!"

- "(...);long live the kings."

or

- "(...);long live the kings!" ????

really nice sentence to end an article about coldplay!

So the NME has ranked Viva La Lida lower than X&Y...

...therefore using the basis used in previous reviews, the review must be ignored because if anybody says X&Y is better than Viva is deaf and mad.

According to what?

The real test is to see what Meta Critic picks up as it averages all the reviews, postive, neutral and negative to give the album an overall score.

After-all the music reviewers hopefully know what to look for and should be objective and not subjective

an 8? a lousy 8? and lower than X & Y?? I won't hear those reviews then... are so contrasting... until somebody mix up all the reviews and give a general rating

Yayyy the first REAL review. Weird that he gave it an 8, sounded like he was leaning towards a 9 or 10 by the end of the review...

And is it "King Bono is dead, long live the kings!" (Coldplay has taken the throne)? Cause the actual lyric is "Now the OLD king is dead, long live the king!" aimed at the new king...

damn, i knew it..

always though VLV was a song about U2's frontman :D

I thought that.

The only thing I'd say is that the reviews seem to have become a little more realistic of late. Whoever reviewed X&Y and gave it the same rating as AROBTTH was obviously being generous.

The Last Shadow Puppets album got an 8 this year, for example, whereas I think three years ago it would have got a 9 for sure.

coldplay/crystal method mix sounds incredible! but I guess this time they went coldplay/eno
