Man Utd v Real Madrid is a tie I want to see. It'd be close and interesting.

Also best wishes to Eric Abidal. A fantastic player who will bounce back.

Devastating news abut Abidal...Xavi says it's the toughest thing he's had to go through as a footballer. Hope he gets better soon. Sucks that we won't have his support for the Champions League (and Real twice in April).

Manchester United and England legend Robson fighting battle against throat cancer

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 7:15 PM on 16th March 2011

Former England and Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has undergone surgery for throat cancer.

Robson was in Bangkok when he had the operation on March 3 and United have said specialists are optimistic about the chances of a full recovery.

'Bryan Robson underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on March 3, 2011 in a hospital in Bangkok,' a club statement read.

'The laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour, which will need further treatment. The oncologist is confident that the condition is treatable.'

The former Manchester United skipper is currently combining his work as a United ambassador with coaching the Thailand national team.

The statement continued: 'At this moment Bryan is fine to continue with his role as Thailand coach and his role as ambassador of Manchester United.

'Bryan and his family have requested that he can continue with his treatment in private and ask that their privacy is respected.'

Although it seems Robson has managed to catch the tumour at an early stage, news of the operation will come as a shock.

The 54-year-old was always regarded as the fittest of players, able to push himself far beyond the likes of Paul McGrath and Norman Whiteside who, like Robson, were also noted for their fondness for a drink.

He won 90 caps for his country, 65 as captain, despite a succession of major injuries and was dubbed Captain Marvel by Sir Bobby Robson.

Sir Alex Ferguson was just as enthusiastic about Robson's contribution to the Old Trafford cause and when he left United in 1994 he had led the club to three FA Cups, the European Cup Winners' Cup and two Premier League titles, even though his influence was dwindling by that stage.

He never enjoyed the same success as a manager though. While Robson did enjoy some fine moments in a career that took him from Middlesbrough to Bradford, West Brom and Sheffield United, he remained out of the game following his dismissal by the Blades in 2008 until he replaced Peter Reid in Thailand in September 2009.

Cincinnati Bengals' wide receiver Chad Ochocinco to try out for MLS club Sporting Kansas City

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco will try out with MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

He's got good hands, but is Chad Ochocinco just as skillful with his feet?

The Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver will find out next week when he joins Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City for a four-day trial, the team announced on its website Wednesday.

With the future of the 2011 NFL season in limbo, Ochocinco accepted an invitation from Sporting head coach Peter Vermes to try out for the team.

"Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," Ochocinco said. "Thanks to Sporting Kansas City for giving me this opportunity."

Although Kansas City already has handed in its official roster for the recently begun MLS season, Vermes insists that Ochocinco still can make the squad if he impresses during his tryout, which begins on Tuesday.

"We're always searching for players who can help our team and bringing in new talent," Vermes said. "We know that Chad is an exceptional athlete and that he loves the sport of soccer, and he did play a lot when he was younger."

A 10-year veteran of the NFL, Ochocinco played competitively as a striker from his youth until his days at Miami Beach Senior High School. Despite abandoning the game for the gridiron, he remained a die-hard soccer fan and even formed friendships with some of the sport's biggest names.

"I know a couple of guys. Ronaldinho is one of them. Thierry Henry is good friend of mine. Cristiano Ronaldo, I talk to him all the time on Twitter. We DM back and forth. Ashley Cole is a good friend of mine. I used to go watch Thierry Henry play at Arsenal every off-season," Ochocinco told SportingKC.com.

Whether or not he can compete on their level remains to be seen, but Ochocinco is confident in his abilities on the pitch.

"I played soccer before football, and I was good. That's where I get my quick feet – my feet are unbelievable," he said. "There's not one person in soccer right now that would beat me running, that's including Lionel Messi."

After the initial, four-day test, Kansas City will decide whether to extend Ochocinco's trial period or release him.

Oh and I wish Bryan Robson well and a speedy recovery. A fabulous player but being too young to remember him I'll always be thrilled by his role as manager of West Brom in that unforgettable Sunday afternoon in May 2005 when West Brom somehow escaped relegation when only one of them, Southampton, Norwich and Crystal Palace would escape relegation. It was a fantastic day for the neutral football fan and I thank Robson and his gritty team for the entertainment. Get well soon Robbo!

I lol'd hard.

I mean he could probably outrun Leo in a footrace, but if a football is involved, Leo Messi is the king of dribbling at very high speeds.

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has had successful surgery to remove a liver tumour, the club have announced.

The 31-year-old France international was operated on by Dr Josep Fuster Obregon at the BarnaClinic Grup Hospital Clinic in the Catalan city.

Barcelona said the tumour was removed in a three-hour operation on Thursday without any complications.

"Depending on his progress, the player could be allowed to leave hospital within a week," read a club statement.

"By the express desire of the player, the club ask for the maximum respect for his right to privacy and confidentiality."

Abidal joined Barcelona from Lyon in 2007 and has been a regular this season.

Pep Guardiola's side lead Spain's La Liga and are through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Capped 52 times by France, Abidal made his international debut in 2004 and has played for his country at two World Cups as well as the 2008 European Championship.

Cesc Fabregas and Cristiano Ronaldo are some of the fellow players who have sent their best wishes to Abidal since news of the tumour emerged on Tuesday.

His Barcelona team-mates have also been quick to rally round, with midfielder Xavi earlier in the week: "He's a strong person, mentally one of the strongest I know and an example to everyone in the locker room.

"We encouraged him and he was just like he always is, he gave us encouragement. He'll beat this. We were surprised how good of a state he is in. He told us 'that that's life'."

Speaking for the Barcelona squad, Xavi added: "It's probably the strongest hit we've ever taken. It was the worst moment I've ever experienced in a locker room.

"We're going to make sure this unites us more than ever. When averse situations happen to a collective, it helps unite them and that's what we're going to do: try to let it affect us the least amount possible. Life goes on."

Carroll heads wide for a Liverpool side lacking creativity against Braga

Liverpool 0-0 Braga (agg 0-1)

Liverpool were dumped out of the Europa League as they failed to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit as Braga held them to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Striker Andy Carroll made his first start for the club since signing from Newcastle and carried his side's greatest threat - twice heading wide.

But the Reds lacked creativity and struggled for a breakthrough. Raul Meireles headed horribly high and Martin Skrtel had a late chance saved as the Reds tamely bowed out.

Referee Vladimir Sajn sends off Manchester City's Balotelli

Man City 1 - 0 Dynamo Kiev (agg 1 - 2)

Ten-man Manchester City were dumped out of the Europa League despite earning a 1-0 second-leg win over Dynamo Kiev.

City dominated the first half but Mario Balotelli scooped over from three yards and missed with a header from 12 yards.

Striker Balotelli was sent off for a foul on Goran Popov before the break, giving City a tough task to overcome their two-goal first-leg deficit. Aleksandar Kolarov fired in low from 20 yards to give them hope but City failed to trouble Kiev in the second half.

City's only realistic hopes of winning their first piece of major silverware since 1976 now rest with the FA Cup. That semi-final date against local rivals Manchester United on 16 April is now a do-or-die tie for Roberto Mancini's multi-million pound outfit.

The chickens are already coming home to roost as far as Balotelli's concerned. He's a bona fide nutjob.

Indeed. I'd rather him be in a different league. Not because he annoys me that much, like Ronaldo used to, but just because everything about him bores me.

then

Real Madrid/Tottenham v Barcelona/Shakhtar Donetsk

Inter Milan/Schalke 04 v Chelsea/Man Utd

Nice!

Did somebody say "fix"?

Why fix it when they could beat anyone anyway?
