I think maybe you guys are taking Eno's comments too seriously. I think his point was that he helped guide coldplay on the new album, and on X&Y all he said was that they could use some guidence. He's completely right though. Even the band have said this. Eno did a great job with them on the new album. In my mind, he is the perfect producer for coldplay.

The Quiet One, Space Cadet and Twisted Logic have all summed it up fairly well... IMO. When I first started reading fellow coldplayers disgust over Brian Eno's "zonked" comment, half of me agreed that it was a silly thing to say and half of me thought, "well, its not about THAT comment." Its about the need to step back and realize that all the perfect ingrediants are in place. They are vitally important to the finished product.

 

Eno is a legend in his own right, yes. However, Viva La Vida will be remembered in the end as a legendary COLDPLAY album that turned the tide. I think one that was so necessary for them.

 

As to the production value of the album. It is plain to see that when you strip down 2 of the songs that we have all heard, LIJ and Lost! What you get is quintisential vintage Coldplay and we as fans of the first two albums, and the 3rd, (myself included) have nothing to worry about.

 

The headline to this thread maybe a little over the top...

i think brian eno's just over the moon about making his first decent album in 17years (the last being achtung baby in 1991). i wouldn't say that X&Y was over produced rather it was badly produced. and any half decent producer would've told the band that they needed to stop doing things the way they did in their last album. personally im still not sold on eno's credibility in 21st century music even though VLV is a top album.

This is NOT called professional mixing and adding background instruments.

 

It is to much.. there are to much instruments in there.

To play it exact live as the records.. you need a band of 100 man :P

 

But, X&Y does also use background instruments! But not as much as VLVODAAHF.

I hear in X&Y(Song) also alot of strings, cellos and more.

And what you think about the guitar background tracks in High Speed? And Low? And In My Place?

Really? I've never heard that before. How comes he isn't credited for it on the record sleeve but he gets a credit for his work on 'Low'?

 

Also, Eno didn't mix the record so you can't blame him for that.

 

I think we can all agree that another album in the same old Coldplay mould would not have been a good move for the band.

I kind of agree with Eno. Although there were many songs on X&Y I loved, there were some that seemed to be "over experimented". I think songs that used "too many new spices" were: Square One, What If, X&Y, Low, Twisted Logic. Im not saying these are bad songs, just maybe would have been better if they didnt have so much new effects and stuff at their hands.

I'm sure Eno helped to get them back on track and ground them, but I think they would have made a pretty decent album without him too. I mean, they did ask Phil to come back, so it's all good! :P

I don't think Brian was being rude though. He's right... even though X&Y was ok.. it could've been much better if it hadn't been so edited and over-produced. The band just needed someone to wake them up and make them notice that.

I'm a bit late but I completely agree with Mo, plus newspaper always put such headlines to attract readers, I'm sure he didn't use those words, the Italian words used could be better translated as "they were overcooked" meaning they didn't know what to do next, and he helped them find their way, as the band members always remark during interviews

Chris has made it clear that he's known Brian for a few years now from interviews and such and that he respects him greatly, especially since he has produced the majority of U2, his favorite band's, albums. For those of you who say silly things like "Fuck Eno" and "Brian Eno is overrated," you're in the minuscule minority, for your information. Any music critic, music journalist, etc. will agree that he is one of the most innovative, creative, and influential artists/producers in the history of music. Coldplay are privileged just to look at the man, he's just that damn good.

I still think that Eno is overrated. My point being that Coldplay could have produced a fourth album without Eno and the album would have been just as good and just as successful-- if not more. Take X&Y for example. Eno did not produce X&Y and that album sold more copies in the U.S. than VLV in its first week.

Would it be valid and reasonable to say that Larry Bird's son would be a great and possibly even better player than his father had he played basketball just because he's Larry Bird's son? Of course not. My analogy is a comparison to your assertion that Coldplay's forth album would have still been great and possibly even better than Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends without Eno's involvement. Of course, this cannot be proven or unproven, so to criticize a person, Brian Eno, based on your musings on an unanswerable question is as silly and stupid as a screen door on a submarine, quite frankly. Overrated or not, he is a genius who saved Coldplay. And whether you like him or not, you owe it to yourself to realize that he, along with Markus Dravs, Rik Simpson, and Jon Hopkins saved Coldplay.

that's ridiculous, he can't be serious.... it's true that he's very good at what he does but it's ultimately coldplay's music what makes the album so good...

Eno is a good influence and he did possibly revive the band and get them their new sound, but he shouldnt take all the credit. and he shouldnt say they would have failed wothout him. they maybe wouldnt have been as successful on VIVA but they still would have pulled something beautiful out their asses.:cool:
