That person is there to catch the front scrim when it drops to reveal the band. If you read one of Roadie 42's recent blog posts, he talks about how the scrim drop at the second stadium show in Europe recently took out Chris' mike stand. When that thing drops it is supposed to miss all equipment and people and be quickly whisked out of the way and out of sight. Notice how his arm is out. That's to "catch" something to do with the scrim equipment as it falls, I'm sure.

Thanks for explaining. The backlighting of the band against the scrim makes them look larger than life. The sparklers are a fairly recent addition - at the beginning of the whole tour in July 2008, they didn't use the sparklers.

 

And I agree...I really wish they would at least announce something to all of us ticketholders. It's been 2 weeks today. When Aerosmith cancelled the remainder of their tour last week, we had our refund within hours of the announcement. I'm sure they're just trying to work out what to do - if in fact it will be in conjunction with a Latin American tour, but since there has been no official announcement, just speculation and rumors, who knows.

Roadie 42 described how the "dancing roadie" had to climb up on the railing above the stage to release the screen after it had become stuck:

Now, if that shot doesn't give you vertigo, then spare a thought for lampy Wayne Kwiat (known to many as "the dancing roadie"). The gauze that drops in front of the stage to get the show get off to its shadowy start got somewhat tangled tonight. The only solution was to lower in the wave truss and have Wayne hop on and be lifted up there to set it free. Imagine what the place looked like to him from up there, stood on a three inch metal tube...

The whole arrangement of Coldplay's show reveals the band's creativity and genius. The opening and closing melody is The Escapist, which sounds to me like a song about love, intimacy, and death. Before LIT, we only hear the melody. During the outro, we hear a recording of Chris' voice, gently singing the lyrics:

 

And in the end, we lie awake and we dream of making our escape...

 

The X&Y tour also had a dramatic opening with the song Square One. It began with Chris Martin's singing in front of a huge LED clock ticking down, then, with a high energy performance with lots of running and a few yoga positions thrown in. Nothing, however compares to the current show which a critic whom I respect best describes as a spectacle, compared to Coldplay's earlier shows. Both Coldplay's and the audience's level of passion has reached a crescendo on the Viva La Vida tour, surpassing that of prior tours, even though they were emotionally charged as well.

 

I wonder how Coldplay can top Viva La Vida, but I know they will because they are creative and open to others' opinions. In interviews, Chris describes how others' constructive criticisms have led them to the current show. He also tells several anecdotes, describing instances all through his career, from one of their earliest recording Shiver, Chris has had a positive attitude towards others' advice and criticism. He has a positive attitude in general that I believe has led to Coldplay's huge success. He is an inspiration for my own life, and my best example of a profoundly successful and self-realized person.

Even an email saying "we're still working on it" would be appreciated. Other than the original two emails announcing the delay (the first with the announcement and then the second with the "oops, we listed the wrong time in that announcement" info), I've heard nothing. The week after the postponement I sent an email to LiveNation, asking when we might hear something. The response I got back was basically "we don't know anything".

 

I just sure hope that this show IS indeed rescheduled. If not, it's pretty lousy of them (with "them" being the promoter and the band's booking agency, not the band themselves) to string us along this long.

 

I would be patient. The Latin American tour might not be until next year or later. It would still be better than Coldplay's canceling the show. I'd hold onto your tix as long as you need to, but allow for a lot of time.

Reggie, I love these sentiments. But I can't help but wonder how positive he is to Will's "seal of disapproval." :laugh3: Seriously, thoough, I think they as friends and bandmates respect each other immensely, and while Chris will always be the "face" of the band, the others all have equal say. For Chris to be the face, he has to put himself out there and he seems to accept the visible responsibility for the band's decisions - even though he always tries to spread the recognition with Jonny, Will and Guy. The die hards like us see them as a complete unit, whereas the casual fan may see only Chris.

I agree about Chris being the frontman to people who only "see him", they wouldn't be where they are without, Jonny, Will and Guy. I think Chris is well aware of this and relies on their output in order to make Coldplay a fine organized unit. I feel the Love for each one of them.

Agreed. It's comforting to share with others who understand our crazy and irrational love of Coldplay. I'm glad to know that there are many who are actually more enthusiastic than I am, or at least who are more willing to act on it by traveling long distances to see them! It makes my two-hour drive to Sacramento (to see them the second night in a row) seem pretty tame!

Nah, you get double points for driving to Sacramento, no offense to Sacramentonians, but not only was it to Sac'to, but it was another 40 miles north to Nowhere's-ville. I just sat my butt on a plane with direct-tv, my book, and my ipod for 6 hours, and got to visit with a dear friend and her family, as an added bonus, before meeting up with the Coldplay-shaped fans :P

Oh Hell No. I kinda hinted in my email, like this"So if we left thurs. evening the 17th, we would get in on Friday morning the 18th" I said that, so they would get the hint, I would rather get there Fri. morn. I know London flights leave out in the evening, from Orlando, and that way we can sleep on the plane. Hopefully they will do this.

Yeah, it's the only way to do it. With the time difference, all flights are overnight from the US. When I was looking at flights from Los Angeles, they almost all arrive early in the morning, like between 6-7am. Early, yes, but it gives a whole extra day in London. I'm so envious. I do keep checking flights, but I really don't think it's gonna happen, unless I win the lottery or something. To use airline miles now will cost 110,000 miles, but if I could book the "saver" tickets, it's only 55,000...but we are seriously thinking of taking the kids to London for next spring break. They were so young when we lived there, and don't remember anything (and my youngest wasn't even born). But watch, we'll plan it for spring break and that's when they'll reschedule Tampa..ha ha wouldn't that just be my luck?

:laugh3: You're right, it was a 3 1/2 drive on the way to the concert with the traffic. We were going to get something to eat after Sacramento, but there was literally nothing, zilch between Sac and the Sleep Train Amphitheatre. So, my friend bought a veggie burger at the venue and shared his french fries with me. Going home, we flew back in 2 hours, which included the 20-minute wait to get out of the parking lot, since we had VIP parking. Most people are pleasantly numb after the concert and didn't even seem to mind the wait. My friend noticed as we were walking out that everyone seemed to be on cloud nine.

 

I know you're being very modest about your Tampa experience. I bet that Coldplay would make it up to you if they could, though there may be too many people for them to compensate everyone.

I wouldn't hint at anything if I were in your place. You want to be sure to arrive there early enough to be fresh the next day for the concert. Did you see the account of the young lady in Stockholm in the 8/22 concert forum? She and her friend had arrived at 9 AM to get in line for a stadium show. They opened the doors at 4 PM, and they were able to get in the 4th row in front of the stage. She had to use the bathroom, and when she returned, she could not get through the crowd to return to where she was. She spent an hour trying, but ended up on the far left side of the stage. I had the worst and also the best night of my life! We came to the stadium at 9am with my friend and had the line up numbers 359&360 and when we got in we were like 7-10 meters from the stage at 4pm when we got in and people sat on the ground, but then I HAD TO go to the toilet around 5pm and when I came back people were suddenly STANDING and I just couldn't get throught to where I used to be!! My friend who I came with from Finland to see the show was there alone and she had my bag which had my cell phone and all my stuff (except my camera) so I couldn't call her that I can't get through to her and I was trying for like an hour to get there from different parts of the field and just panicing and stuff and I just couldn't get there (I got like 5 meters from the end of the crowd and then just couldn't move anymore!) and so I went to the security people and they helped me a little so I finally (after calling for like 30 minutes) got hold of my friend and then I went into the crowd to get a place to watch and ended up being at the end of the long stage on the left..I'm so annoyed! why couldn't I just stay there and see the fucking concert from like the third row and now I'm at like almost half way of the field! SUCKS!!! but well the concert was still awesome (tho I couldn't see the guys on the stage almost at all) but chris came close to me a couple of times and stuff so I guess it was ok, but I was just so sad!! I'm so dissapointed on that side..but still I enjoyed the concert of course and the fireworks, confletties and balloons and stuff were awesome too!!

 

My favourites were Deathandallhisfriends, strawberry swing (mostly because they did a small moment of Amsterdam there which is my second favourite CP song..) and the amazing LITii with the fireworks and all the singing that was like the happiest moment of my life! (that + singing

And you should tell them you want a nonstop out of Miami. I would think there are no nonstops from Orlando, so you'd most likely go nonstop from Atlanta or Miami. At least that way, you will have more uninterrupted flight time, rather than having to change planes in somewhere like Wash DC, NY or New Jersey...Hey, I'm good at making travel arrangements, just leave it up to me and I'll get you there in good time and at a nice hotel. My cuz and wife come out here every year, and they fly nonstop to orlando and Orlando to London, and AirsLady (Carol) flies out nonstop wed. the 16th from O'town, so I think there are some flights straight thru, I am hoping. My Father-in law is upgrading us to first class when we have our flight info. Too many good things keep happening to us concerning this trip and now I am paranoid.. I told my hubby, Chris is gonna pull a Steven Tyler on the 18th and cancel the 19th:D

Guess I was wrong....that's even better if you can go nonstop :) And first class too? Way to go. We flew Business class to Hong Kong and Bangkok earlier this year, and it was so much nicer than being crammed in Coach for 14 hours...

There's a nonstop flight from Tampa to London Gatwick via British Airways. :smiley:
