U2 CANCEL GLASTONBURY AND US TOUR AFTER BONO's INJURY

U2 have pulled out of the Glastonbury Festival and postponed their US tour after Bono had emergency surgery to save him from possible paralysis.

The singer, 50, had a back operation on Friday after suffering an injury while training in preparation for the tour.

Neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn said: "The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis."

Bono, who must recuperate for the next two months, said he was "heartbroken".

They were due to headline Glastonbury on 25 June, in the middle of their 16-date North American tour, which was booked for June and July.

Prof Tonn told the Reuters news agency Bono had been "in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg".

The frontman is "now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit", he continued.

"His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation."

Dr Muller Wohlfahrt, who also treated the star in Munich, Germany, explained: "Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve.

"On review of his MRI scan, I realised there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice.

"We are treating Bono as we would treat any of our athletes and, while the surgery has gone very well, the coming weeks are crucial for a return to full health."

His rehabilitation will begin in the next few days, with the intensity increasing over the next eight weeks.

The band's manager Paul McGuinness said the group were "devastated" at postponing the concerts.

"For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow," he said.

"His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono makes a full recovery."

Glastonbury had been attempting to book U2 for many years and their appearance was expected to be a highlight of the event's 40th anniversary.

The band said they had written a new song for the occasion.

"I'm heartbroken," he said. "We really wanted to be there to do something really special."

Bono phoned festival organiser Michael Eavis on Tuesday morning to break the news.

Mr Eavis said: "It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed. Clearly they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them."

'Best wishes'

He declined to comment on a possible replacement. "Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery," Mr Eavis added.

Dizzee Rascal, who is below U2 on the Pyramid Stage bill on Friday 25 June, could now take the headline slot. Festival favourites Coldplay have also been mentioned as possible replacements.

The festival has had to cope with headliners pulling out in the past.

In 1995, The Stone Roses cancelled when guitarist John Squire broke his collarbone in a cycling accident. Pulp were brought in as last-minute replacements.

In 2005, Kylie Minogue withdrew following her diagnosis with breast cancer. Basement Jaxx were promoted to fill in.

U2's North American dates will be rescheduled.

Their 360 Degree tour earned the band about $109m (£75.3m) in 2009, making it the most profitable tour of the year, according to Billboard magazine.

-----------------

I WISH BONO A FULL AND SPEEDY RECOVERY! :fingers crossed:

I hope it's not Coldplay, cause if it Coldplay they're gonna go out there in those ****** costumes and pull that Viva shit again.

I hope they get their shit together and put out a respectable LP5 and then do Glasto.

Fucking idiots.

Still love them though. For some reason.

youre a hater,so dont need to discuss with you,go to the radiohead forum and let Cp fans enjoy they forum ;).

^^

They win more money in tour maybe, but in album sales lately , theres no comparison XD

8 million(viva) and 10 million (x and y) vs 3 million( no line ..) of u2 last record ,that means coldplay has more fans that buy their albums ,that spend money on them, wayy more .

Now they are the biggest band on earth, many many people confirm that, watch some videos in youtube youll notice how many presenters name them as that, during X and Y era too, they were already ruling the world.

You may like what you like, but for me they are also the best band in the world :smug: (appart from the biggest also)

Okay even though I'm done with this discussion, whatever live in your own little "ZOMGCOLDPLAYISLIKETHEBESTBANDINTHEWORLDVIVAFOREVER" world. All I'm asking for is don't talk shit about other bands if you know nothing about them. But in reply to your big argument uhhh Joshua tree sold over 10 million copies,

All that you can't leave behind 12 million, How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb 9 million... Yeah.

I'm done. Peace.

too many stupid people in this thread

You're probably the most closed minded and stupid person in this thread. Go to back to your Coldplay section of the forum if you're looking for a place where everybody thinks Coldplay is the best band in the world.

If there was a hall of fame for Coldplaying morons you'd get my vote.

I love all 3 bands. I have every single album put out by all 3 bands, and I know their catalogs like the back of my hand. So I'm not here to "hate" on any band.

That said, I would consider you a fool if you didn't take an opportunity to see the original four members of a generation defining band in a one-off festival environment.

I will admit that I am in my early 30s, so I was listening to music when Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby were released (UF is even a little before my time). I would imagine most people on this forum look back at these albums retrospectively and, therefore, have a hard time placing them in their proper context. Let me tell you something: Music would not sound the way it does today without u2. Some bands are so big, and influence so great, that it is impossible to escape. Like, it doesn't even matter whether you like the Beatles or not - their influence is so great that it changed the entire landscape of music. I'm not saying u2 are comparable to the Beatles, but for an entire generation, u2 were "their" Beatles.

So I am offended when some punk kid with no perspective tries to tell me about u2 and their place in music. You have no idea what you are talking about. Kudos to the younger people on this board who, whether they like u2 or not, still show them the respect they deserve. If you don't like them, a simple "it's not my taste" would suffice.

This thread is amusing. :blank:

But seriously, guys, we all just need to accept that everyone has different taste in music and that some of us like Coldplay (and this is a Coldplay fansite, so some of you need to get over the fact that the majority of the people here happen to like Coldplay) and some of us prefer

U2 or Radiohead or whatever else. Just because you love U2 doesn't mean that Coldplay fans are inferior, and vice versa.

That is all.

Wow I never meant any of this when I said Coldplay weren't big enough to fill U2's spot.

I'm not attacking Coldplay, I just believe other acts, primarily The Rolling Stones, deserve to take U2's spot because of their prominence in music history. Both U2 and The Rolling Stones have a long history behind them whereas Coldplay, as big as they may be today (moreso in America than Britain) just don't match. Give them 3 more albums.

It's about finding an "appropriate" act to replace U2 as a pyramid stage headliner that reflects the history and integrity of Glastonbury as a festival in it's anniversary year. And I don't think Coldplay have made enough of a mark on the musical landscape in only 10 years that the others have. No disrespect, I would like to see Coldplay as a minor performer at Glasto. But I think 2011 is their time.

It's not a matter of personal taste - that's subjective. U2 has two trump cards to play on Coldplay:

1. Any objective measure of what it means to be a rock legend: era defining albums, innovative stage shows, creating an entirely new musical landscape, multi-decade success - the nod goes to U2. These are objective facts.

2. There is no Coldplay without U2.

lol , I am certenely not denying the influence that U2 has had over other bands ( including Coldplay).Albums such as The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby were extremely important and influnencial. With that said , U2 has experienced a decline over the last decade presenting material not as good as their past one and with forgetable albums (not beeing very creative and playing it safe with HTDAAB and All that you cant leave behind to forget the commercially unsuccessful pop album ) and songs that has been represented in sales figures , like No line on the horizon beeing almost a flop and , admiteed by bono himself http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/oct/26/u2-bono-disappointed-album-sales  .

Taking all this in account and not forgeting the legacy that u2 has left to us , today biggest band is Coldplay , u2 once was , but they are not anymore in my opinion , of course you will say that coldplay has not had the same influence that them and all that shit but the truth is that in a few years we will see the results of their influence ( in fact i think that we are all ready seeing it with artists such as keane the killers etc.) but you can not compare the 25 + years of u2 to the bearly 10 of coldplay , we will have to wait .

And of course :D for all that i said before i think that Coldplay's today biggest band , U2's time as the biggest band came to an end when coldplay came to the scene with parachutes  with x&y and viva beeing the best selling albums of their years respectively with only 6 months of beeing on the charts :D thing that u2 would only dream off now ( didnt say back in the day , i know their sales were huge before ) another reason to belive that coldplay is the biggest band in terms of sales right now.

Say what you want  this is coldplay's time , u2 were the biggest band up until 2000

Bono should retire by now , his back hurts , his leg hurts , he should start his own brand of sunglasess  , maybe he would be the biggest sunglasses disinger in the world now :uhoh:
