I love Yes, it's a great song! hugely underrated!

I thought the album was amazing and brilliant the first time I heard it (initial excitement, fangirling and all), but my opinion has changed after a year or so. (Probably because of reading other people's opinions on VLVODAAHF. :blank:)

 

It's still a special album to me, and I still love Life in Technicolor, Chinese Sleep Chant, and Death and All His Friends. I'm glad that they wanted to try experimenting with new sounds.

 

Yeah, me too. There are still gems on this album, but if you listen to VLV, then to AROBTTH, there's really no comparison.

 

That being said, if they made another AROBTTH, I'd be annoyed as well because I like new songs. :lol:

It's not rubbish, but it's far from being the best.

DAAHF is better imo.

I'm not a big fan of 42. . . I felt it just kind of went on and on. :\

 

VLV is actually a pretty good song. It's just had the life beaten out of it by being overplayed so damn much.

VLV was the first Coldplay album I bought, and while it isn't my favorite, I still love it due to my memories (and of course, the great music).

To me, Viva is the best one, because of the band's history. There is such a huge philosophy behind it, with the whole Kahlo thing, first of all, living life to the fullest...

And I admire how they just re-invented themselves, tried new things, brilliantly, how they took huge risks on it, because it was different... When I listen to it, I hear something new, refreshing. I agree that Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant is a bit weird but it is the very first Coldplay song about sex, that was absolutely new for them, but they did it anyway and that only makes it a very beautiful song to me. (And Chinese Sleep Chant is AWESOME :awesome:)

My favourites : Life in Technicolor, Lovers in Japan, Chinese Sleep Chant, Viva la Vida (agree with Prophet of Prospekt :D), Death and all his friends.

Yeah, this. I overplayed that album so bad when I was on my Washington DC trip with my school . . . I can't hear 42 anymore without thinking about the WWII memorial. :smiley:

I didn't really hear VLV too many times because I don't listen to the radio, so it doesn't really bother me too much. I overplayed it myself though. :|

I usually end up liking acoustic versions more than studio versions. :lol:

Good thread! I thought it was stunning when it first came out and was wonderfully refreshing. Musically it was far superior to X&Y which I love dearly personally because it was the first Coldplay album I had as a birthday present in 2005 (although I was a bit of a fan for a few years since but hadn't bothered to buy the albums). It's hard to decide upon which one of VLV and AROBTTH is the best but the problem I have with VLV is that I don't love it as much as the previous 2 albums. I don't know why that is tbh. I think a lot has to do with the fact that personally I have a lot of nostalgia attached to LPs 2 and 3 especially X&Y. And the song VLV itself was way too overplayed and hyped for my liking even if it is at heart a stunning song. That gave me an attitude as though it wasn't MY Coldplay. What I'd love from LP5 is the intimacy that made the first two albums so good. Not like the first two albums but just as intimate but different.

I used to love the album, but there are certainly better ones. X&Y was brilliant, but Viva is growing on me again - I've been listening to it more than usual over the past few days. But, it just doesn't have those brilliant songs that, say, Parachutes or X&Y has. I mean, it's got epically brilliant songs like Cemeteries of London and Death and All His Friends. But then it's got what are, in my opinion, not so good tracks (like 42, which is the only 1-star song in my library... yes, you may kill me, I cop a lot of flak from my friends for that). But I agree, they needed the album to reassess themselves. And hell, it's only my 3rd favourite album because all of them are so damned good :D

Humm, my opinion about the best album of them will never change, I knew them in 2005 with X&Y and it's my favorite album, the best of the whole world. Sometimes I think what's my third favorite album, Parachutes or VLV... Well, when I listen VLV, I always skip VLV (song), unfortunatelly I can't listen it, it makes such success and I wasn't accustomed with the situation. I also remember the non-Coldplay fans at the hotel in Rio to take pics of Chris asking me: who's that handsome member? He's the drummer? :veryangry2::veryangry2::veryangry2:

I really love Yes, Strawberry Swing, 42, Cemeteries Of London, Violet Hill... But I expect a big change in this next album...

Let's give my 2 cents.

 

Alrighty, let's get it out in the air that I'm a fangirl and that I'm a pretty young age.

So, I didn't know shit about anything, and that was t.v,books and music, etc.

But I didn't really go to mainstream, I would listen to those 60's,70's and 80's mix cd's they sold at Target, so I was a pretty blue hipster even at a sort of a young age.

I did like Hannah Montana which was a funny stage, but I knew that I just wanted to be a fan of something modern and it was the hippest thing out.

So like a lot of people here, they heard of Coldplay or got into Coldplay from that famous iTunes commercial and we we're all enchanted by that chant from Viva La Vida.

I knew something about my friend Edgar, who was a big fan of Coldplay but I still had a pretty closed mind.

Anyways so when I was a kid, forced in a way to like modern and hip and what I could get, I found Coldplay to be an amazing thing and then I obsessed about them for like.. maybe 2 or 3 years, and of course I praised the album that got me into it.

So I can't say that "Ohh, I miss the old Coldplay" because it's not like I was there, and I honestly have the same opinion for every album, but there is a huge difference.

Basically they changed but they did for every album.

 

I joined Coldplaying and I got into a lot of bands, which means that I've heard something else other than Coldplay but they're still my favorite band, because they're like.. some kind of childhood hero.

 

But that's not the point, the point is that if I still have the same opinion from when it first came out. I would say that It's the same, amazing but for other reasons now.

and maybe ppl who have liked coldplay for a long period just dont like the new and changed coldplay becoz we want our coldplay back.

The band certainly changed substantially between 2005 and 2008. As they said in the Brian Eno docu: " a moisturised, well-manicured version of Coldplay". I've lost track of the number of TV shows where I've heard VLV play now, and yet not so long ago they were adamant their music wouldn't be used for commercial purposes/ TV shows/ film

 

Chris is definitely much more self-assured than he was before now as well. Yes, he still does self-deprecation like only the upper-middle class English do, but he now has a cocky, schoolboyesque sense of humour which shines through at the press conferences. His genuine self-angst seems gone now (or well hidden).

 

I must say though that I warmed to the band much more when I found out more about them, and VLV was the album to do it for me.

 

I still listen to it now, but LIJ, VLV, DAAHF, and COF are my most listened to tracks. I really liked VH when it came out, but don't listent to it much now.

I probably like it the best because the VLV tour was far better than the other tours.
