Wasn't that Satriani's crew in the other van?

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3::lol::lol::thinking:

Yeh, it was Satriani with Sammy Hagar... they started a band callled "Chickenfoot"

Was on Conan the other night. Dreadfully burnt out 80's sound with overpowering Satriani solo part. Like who's ego is bigger Joe or Sammy.

Boohoo... who's gonna buy this album?

Anyway, great story about the van! :D

What a great great great blog :nice:

R#42 really should write a book!

Great entry indeed!

He almost bring tears with this last sentence:

Admittedly, when the show is over they leave by police escort in a screeching cavalcade of flashing lights, rather than pushing a transit van. Inside the van though, not that much has changed.

Who knew that our Miller was such a poet??

R#42 really should write a book!

Totally agree!!!

That was such a sweet entry

His blogs truly keep getting better and better :nice:

The Coldplay-shaped puppets on tour

The one on the Harley is priceless!!! Jonny is driving!!! Yeah go Jonny boy!

Puppets... No drinks..... No toppless girls????:laugh3: They are being such good little Puppets.:laugh3:

The puppets are more badass-rock-star-y than the band itself!

I hereby declare the puppets an inaccurate representation of the actual band. :P

Coldplay's latest support act checks in with Coldplay.com

news_line.png

With heartfelt rockers Snow Patrol now on the road with Coldplay as their latest support act, we asked frontman Gary Lightbody how it's going...

snowpatrolpic.jpg

Hello Gary, how are you?

Hey there, am grand thanks.

Where are you?

On our way from Texas to the show in Des Moines, Ohio tonight.

How have the first few days of the tour with Coldplay been?

They've been great. We've been treated really well and they have a lovely crew that are being great with our crew. Also they are kicking ass each night. Their show is spectacular. Shaping up as a perfect tour really.

Do you approach support slots differently to headline shows?

You have to really. It's not our crowd and we want to win them over for sure, but also we are the warm-up act and we want to do just that. We try our best to get the crowd as energised as possible, so they're well warm by the time Coldplay come on. You leave your ego at the door for support slots. Best that way.

Have the Coldplay crowds been receptive?

Yes they have. They've been great. There have even been a few singalongs. Hard to know what to expect when you're the support act, but they've been really warm and lovely to us.

You go straight from Coldplay to U2 stadium shows. Are you looking forward to those?

Yes definitely. We toured with U2 in 2005 and we're delighted to be asked again.

For any Coldplay fans who aren't familiar with your music (though lots will be), please could you tell us a bit about Snow Patrol and what you sound like.

The hardest question of them all!! For any band. Two things really first and foremost: melody and honesty. Although live we are a hell of a lot more rock than people might expect. We've been going 15 years so we've been about a bit, but the fire is still there. You'll see that if you get there early and catch us.

Last.fm's auto-recommendation software suggests that Coldplay fans might well like Snow Patrol and vice versa. Would you tend to agree?

Yes I think we write from similar places (as above) although I don't think we sound particularly alike. Essentially we both write big, beautiful music from the heart that, yes, I'm sure would appeal to both sets of fans.

How did you come to be on the tour?

They asked us. Coldplay are one of the few bands that have been around as long as us that we haven't played with til now so it's great to finally get to play together.

Had you met them before?

A few times but only briefly really. Didn't know them very well but they are gentlemen for sure.

Have you been enjoying their shows?

Yes, very much. The stage show is spectacular and their playing is awesome. Chris's voice is exceptional live. Also they are playing my favourite song, Glass Of Water, so that's a bonus too.

Have you had chance to hang out with the band yet?

Yes, we hung out yesterday as two of their lovely crew were having a birthday party and we were invited. A very great day in the texas sunshine. Til the tornado hit that is. Seriously. Exciting though.

Is there any time for any sightseeing on this tour?

You have to make time or life becomes a scooby-doo backdrop (tourbus, gig, tourbus, gig, hotel, tourbus, gig, etc). We're good at getting out into a city and exploring.

What's the best on tour sightseeing you've done?

In my life? Well, I jumped off the southern hemisphere's tallest building a few years back in New Zealand. That was fun. Also we did some boat-surfing (?! it was new to me too) yesterday, which I'd never done before and am now maybe addicted to. I may need to talk to someone. Not sure a sharkophobic surf junkie is appropriate. Only in land locked water for me!

Are you travelling around on a tourbus? If so, what's the best way to pass the time on the journies? (apart from sleeping!)

Reading (at the moment I'm on David Mitchell's debut 'Ghostwritten' and David Niven's autobiography 'The Moon's A Balloon', both of which I recommend) listening to music (anything by James Blackwell, Mstrcrft, The Maccabees, The Lowly Knights, Foy Vance, too much to mention) and watching some films and TV (30 rock, Earl, etc, funny stuff is best for the bus I find)

Pete Yorn spoke highly of Coldplay's catering - what do you think?

Yes, it's been great each night.

What have Snow Patrol got planned for the rest of the year?

We're going to be on tour, with U2 and by ourselves until December. Christmas off methinks.

Our final question is always "what's your favourite Coldplay song?". But you've already answered it.

Yes, I'll stick with Glass Of Water, though there are many greats. It's just a thrilling piece of music isn't it. Live especially. Look close enough each night and you'll see my ever-growing haystack hair, shaking joyfully to it in the wings.

I hope they keep touring the US by themselves :bomb:

I love Snow Patrol and am horribly disappointed they won't be touring with Coldplay on the final North American leg. Great interview nonetheless, and "Glass of Water" is an interesting favorite song choice to hear from Gary.

Where are you?

On our way from Texas to the show in Des Moines, Ohio tonight.

Err, shouldn't that be Iowa? :P

HOLY SHIT!!! ColdplayERS on coldplay.com

#42 and the birthdays bonanza

news_line.png

Rather hilariously, we recently hit a million Twitter followers - shortly after I posted a photo of a toilet door. I shall leave it as an exercise for the reader to decide what that says about the Twitter-verse... In all seriousness though folks, thanks for joining us - and obviously, I'm aware that it's Mr. Berryman's presence that has catapaulted us over the seven figure mark. It's fun to be part of things that are changing so fast. Not knowing how it'll all develop is all part of the fun....

It's been a little while since I've posted and as always happens when I leave it a week or so, the intervening days have all blurred into the rear view mirror somewhat. What I do remember, is that we seem to have been averaging a birthday every other day on this tour leg. Geoffrey who handles band security, kicked things off just before we arrived in Austin. We then moved on to celebrating the birth of Ms. Vicki Taylor, one of the band's lovely personal assistants. Now, it's no surprise that everyone on the tour would wish Vicki a happy birthday, but this took us completely aback:

blog8601.jpg

I mean, the fact that these people know her name is pretty amazing - but the fact that they know it's her birthday and have come out celebrating tonight? Just bonkers! (In the most lovely way, of course...)

Soundman Dan Green celebrated two days after Vicki. His birthday also coincided almost perfectly with his ten year anniversary working for the band. He's been with the band since almost their very first show and has seen more Coldplay gigs than any other person on the planet. For his thirtieth the other night, he got his very own spotlight and a rather lovely cheer.

In order to mark the birthday season, Franksy organised a party on one of the days off recently. It was a top day out by a lake, with swimming, jet-skis and a constant supply of barbeque goodness. We were joined not only by Jim from Sleepercar, who opened up for the band a few months back, but also by current opening act Snow Patrol. Great chance to get to know folks - they drive a mean jet-ski those fellas - at least while it's still got fuel in it they do...

Someone's iPod was hooked in to the stereo and it shuffled into one of the tracks that the band play through the PA just before going onstage. For a moment everyone froze, before falling about laughing. Guy did the decent thing and ejected it, assuming his rightful place as groove controller. He slipped his iPod into the deck and delivered top tunes for the remainder of the day.

Talking of Snow Patrol, I have to say that not only are they absolutely top fellas to a man (band and crew), but they're going down an absolute storm. They're getting the crowd on their feet each and every night and getting sing-a-longs worthy of headliners. Rightly so an' all! They comfortably fill places this size in their own right and have tunes to match.

In a rather heart-warming tale, the video department have started shooting Snow Patrol for the big screens that relay the show to the folks up the very back. Now in normal cases, this is subject to a fee payable to each of the cameramen and so on, as they'd normally be relaxing on the bus at this point in the day.

blog8602.jpg

Video Director Andy Bramley, though, has decided that being as the whole video department are watching Snow Patrol's show each night anyway, they might as well get in there and get on with it. The fee has reportedly been shrunk to a hundred bucks and a bottle of vodka. The hundred bucks is to go to the charity of the band's choosing. The vodka, you will be unsurprised to learn, does not...

Quite what it is about being an early summer baby that makes folks pre-disposed to life of tour-buses and hotels I have no idea, but the June birthdays continue apace. Omaha marks the turn of Marguerite, our lovely Production Assistant who sits at a desk akin to a small florists today.

She points out that her birthday last year fell on the same day as the Wembley Arena "Friends and Family" show. This was, in many ways, the starting line for the tour. They weren't paying punters and it wasn't a "real gig", but it was the first time the intro rolled and everyone was hoping to whatever god they did or didn't believe in that it would all go ok.

So that makes the Viva Tour officially one year old. We're all walking upright now and can pretty much feed and dress ourselves. I still wake up screaming in the night from time to time, but overall, it's turning into a fine young tour...
