Have they lost their minds?

Ok, people who defend Paradise. (See, I don't even mention ETIAW, MM, MTM). I need something to tell you.

God bless Parachutes and AROBTTH, but they are GONE, and became history before some of you were born. And there is no need to repeat it in every single post. Yes, YES, I know that. And I don't want Coldplay to write songs like Blue, Red and Purple. I want them to release good, decent tracks. They may take any direction in the world they want - electronic, jazz, pop, whatever. For me it doesn't matter. I was sincerely surprised with people who disliked Viva. I really don't mind more mainstream or pop sound.

You know what? When ETIAW was released I felt really bad about all the criticism (sometimes groundless). I thought it was Ok, it was typical summer hit - a bit light-headed, but nice, dancey tune with great riff and good beat. Nevertheless, it was just ok.

But when I heard lead single from new album which, according to the Oracle, represents content of the album, I was like: are you kidding me? It is not even ETIAW, it's worse. I wouldn't mind if it was a b-side or an album track.. But lead single? Oh no.

I don't know what you hear in this song that I just can't hear. I don't think it is the worst song ever - it has nice beats, it is listenable. But amazing, inspirational, great? No.

Oh, well. As long as I have Us Against the World, I can't complain.

Yes there will be genres on MX that are at the opposite sides of the musical spectrum, so unless you like a pretty wide variety of music, you will be disappointed by something and will like something else. This is definitely my feeling about MX at this point. People get inspired by different things. What to some is cheesy soulless , to others it´s awe-inspiring. It´s inevitable.

How can you not get it? What people have been saying is that they are trying to appeal to a BIGGER audience. Those who have not yet become their fans. Those are the majority that play major role in choosing which song will be on the billboard charts, mtv charts and the radio plays. Those who listen to Rihanna and One Republic. Those are the audience that some people in this thread are saying that Coldplay are aiming for.

On a different note, I do agree that the hideous outfit, the horribly striking watches, the different coloured shoe laces a-la high school kids, and the stupid haircut fit perfectly to ETIAW and Paradise, but only because both the songs and the outfits are equally horrible.

wow great post! i salute you.

(btw kasabian are fuckin awsomeeeeeeeeeeeeeee)

Whether you like it or not, popish music IS the white rose movement. If you ever have studied that movement, they didnt go around painting street art and singing "lets go back to the start". Lets be real here, traditional Coldplay doesnt fit with street art. Its far from it. Kudos to Coldplay for going out of their comfort zone and trying something new. If they listened to some of the people on this board and went back to rush of blood music, they would die out. If you are not lady gaga or a rapper, you either have to evolve or die in the music industry. I personally like Paradise, For the first time since X&Y, Coldplay sounds "Big" again. The Song itself just sounds massive (If that makes any sense to you guys). It isnt synth driven. If you have any sort of decent speakers or headphones, you will realized those are electric chellos and other strings.

Coldplay is changing, I like it personally. I love coldplay for their melodies, and paradise has a damn good melody. Major Minus has a melody. For someone who listens to for their lyrics, then you are entitled not to like it....but this is an album inspired by the white rose movement, so it will sound different.

Thats my opinion.

I'd rather they put some effort into making a good album than putting effort into an album so it "fits the white rose movement".

And many of us don't mind music evolving, what we mind is a good band taking a bad turn, which Paradise suggests to us.

Paradise doesn't sound big to me, it sounds very empty and emotionless.

I overheard someone compare the sound of Paradise to that of Neon Bible as an album today.

I almost lost my lunch.

People who are defending Paradise for the same reason; that they evolve and we're not supporting them.

Give us a break, we came from another entrance, a soft rock/alternative rock to synth pop with some guitar thrown in there. It's a little hard to keep liking them now that they make music that we do not like because we came listening to something else.

Coldplay is a band that makes a certain music that we like and we want to hear more. This doesn't sound like them. If you took Chris' vocals I wouldn't have known it was them at all. It's like you had a friend who used to like Radiohead and the Flaming Lips and then they just started liking Rhianna and Beyonce. They could still be nice people but now we have nothing in common and there nothing to talk about and that was the end of it, I miss my old friend Coldplay but now they are gone.

I think I'm making this too dramatic but eh.

I'd like to assume so, it was one of those "hipster is now mainstream lol irony I like Vampire Weekend and OFWGKTA and Fleet Foxes and everything p4k BNM's" types, she's white as fuck too. She calls every single movie a "film" and the theater "the cinema."

Creative writing was supposed to be a good class. :bigcry:

Completely agree. Like Anette said, it's like they gained a following of people who enjoyed simple, mellow alt rock and now all of a sudden they go "HAI GUIZ WE WANT TO MAKE POP MUSIC PLS BUY IT AND SUPPORT TNX BAI <3"

I feel somewhat abandoned. . . it's almost like they weren't happy having alt rock fans, now they want pop fans.

And yeah maybe I'm being a bit dramatic too, but it is how I feel.

wjqdewqdh I love how you and I are on the same page :wacky:

I was listening to Parachutes the other day and It made me feel sad :disappointed: I do feel very upset about this.. I don't even know who they are anymore

You're not making this too dramatic at all. This is exactly how I feel. Like I've lost an old friend. It's a bit like losing the best boyfriend in the world who's left you for that shiny plastic chick who lives in that giant mansion on the hill...

It's like we don't know them anymore, because this change is completely different to what we would expect.

nice song different sound good melody i think it fits the people who hate the new sound youre missing something coldplay its not our friend its just a band who makes music and they are trying new concepts and they made a really good song(paradise) if you dont like it dont buy the cd and f.... off. good bye fellows

I like the song but can understand why people don't like it being from Coldplay. It is different for them, but also sort of expected in a way. After the success of Viva I think we would be idiots to really think they would either go back to a more alternative or stripped down sound rather than continue with the more mainstream pop sound. Also, we all knew Will was messing with drum machines and 'beats' so this more electronic/synth sound was kind of the direction i figured they might head after hearing all that news. It follows Viva well in terms of mainstream I guess...

This song makes me want to shrivel up an die- it's that bad.

That's a lie.

Initially I just kept thinking:.....first The King of Limbs, and now This???....I might not recover from this 'musica annus horibilis'

But now I've settled down a bit...

I don't mind change, I didn't hate when they did it for X & Y.

It's just this song is Soooooo bad. All time low for me. I think I might be over-reacting on the album though. CB is wonderful, MTM, though not on the album, is from the same batch and is quite nice....

... and maybe I'll LOVE some others when we finally get to hear it entirely.

They're allowed a clunker once in a while. I'm trying to be positive, and I'll always love my Coldplay.

Peace out.

It's simple, people who don't like the new material can decide not to buy the album or not. And they don't have to even listen to the songs ever either. The people who like the album should accept that. Same with the people who like it, if they like it, that's fine. Buy the album and enjoy the songs and the people who hate it should respect that also.

As for people who like the other material besides ETIAW and Paradise, they can decide if they want to get it or not and can get rid of those songs and add in MTM or something instead if they want.

As for me, I'm really liking it so far. I'm really like the story of this concept album. Think about it, ETIAW and Paradise sound much better when thought as as a part of a story or concept. As standalone songs they may sound a little bad to some people but you have to connect the dots with all the other songs. I know some Coldplay fans aren't used to concept albums and may be a bit confused with this. As for me, thankfully I'm musically diverse enough that I can appreciate the new songs. :)

EDIT: BTW, I loved The King of Limbs. It changed my perspective on life a bit.

it's mixing contemporary chart music with the Viva blueprint

.

in other words: shitty music (contemporary chart music) with their worst record, uhm..

well done

if you dont like it dont buy the cd and f.... off. good bye fellows

WOW. I WANNA BE LIKE YOU.

Prepare for a big, long Chelsea post

I have to say that I generally agree with pretty much everything the original poster said. I haven't hidden the fact on the forum that even though I might actually enjoy all of the songs to some extent (besides Paradise, which just makes me shake my head and wonder who the hell they are), I don't really like anything they've done lately for any of the reasons that I originally fell in love with Coldplay. That's the part that really makes me sad, because most other bands I like that have been around for just as long as Coldplay have certainly grown and changed like Coldplay has, but has retained some sort of thread of sonic similarity and maintained the same goals and outlook throughout the years. I don't feel the same is true with Coldplay anymore, but that's just my opinion. To be honest, I started to feel this way back in 2008 with VLV, even though I think that's a great, solid album. I just started to feel their shift then, and I guess in that sense, I'm not at all surprised by what's happening now.

Here's my two cents on it's not very "them".

If you expect Coldplay to sound one way, you are putting them in a box. This is obviously the music that was in their minds and hearts. You can't say it isn't "them". Maybe it's not "you" would be a better description.

This is the thing, though. I definitely get fed up of people expressing their opinions in either direction like they're definitively exactly what's going on. The only thing we all know is that they're changing--beyond that, it's all opinions. I'm just as guilty of this as everyone else, but in the end, we don't know their motives for doing what they're doing. I have my suspicions that the band is letting the people who really rely on them to make money have a big part in the decision-making, but who knows? We can't really say what "them" is. A huge change in direction doesn't necessarily mean they've lost themselves. What it comes down to is that for whatever reason, I'm not a big supporter of the change in direction, not because it's change, but because I don't like the particular direction. A good example of this is X&Y--I find that album to be pretty different than the first two, but I still love it because I so happened to like that direction (and it also seemed to fit my opinion of what "Coldplay" is, whereas VLV didn't as much, and the sounds of MX really don't). I certainly don't think we should box an artist, and I think some of us are. But I also think we're within our rights to want certain things from them, whether or not we receive them.

I've been a Coldplay fan for a very long time. I have become friends with other Coldplay fans over the years. And honestly with the release of every Coldplay album at least one of those people have stopped liking the band because of the new album. Yes even AROBTTH! Friends who I thought would be in for the long haul have left in disgust, saying they were embarrassed to have ever liked the band to begin with. So what you've said here is no news flash to me.

I never asked to band to make the same record over and over. I have always liked some songs way more than others. I am glad that Charlie Brown wasn't released as a single because hearing it every 5 minutes on the radio would probably make me hate it and I want to love it forever!

Everything Mark has said here someone has said with every album release.

I wasn't around for the AROBTTH release, but this is definitely true. It all comes down to personal taste, in the end. It's just that this time around, I find it interesting that so many fans are feeling the same way--with other eras, there were certainly a few that gave up and left, some eras more than others, but this time it seems to be more of a mass exodus, or at least a very large group of people that are on the verge of giving up if the album turns out in a certain way and if the band does certain things. This is what interests me--I don't think any band wants this to happen, for such huge sections of their fanbase to be dissatisfied to the point of giving up, even if they are gaining new fans from other places. Given the types of new fans they seem to be aiming for, they should realize that the way the industry is and the theories on what this up-and-coming generation is like these days, it's much harder to hold fans' attention and keep them for the long run. This isn't to say that they should create music just to keep us all happy, because they don't owe us a thing. But it's an interesting, risky choice, I think. The bottom line is that I don't think it's about the band making the same record over and over, because we'd be whining just as much about that. Personally, I think it's about striking a balance between change and progression while still carrying on with the original things you set out to do and be.

Damn 'Paradise' is really a more bombast version of 'Umbrella'

Ah Chelsea I agree with everything :nice: I feel exactly the same, there's nothing wrong with evolution (I enjoyed VLVODAAHF far, far more than X&Y for example) but there is almost nothing I recognise in this band from the one I loved apart from Chris Martin's effects laden voice.

And I agree that this definitely can't just be put down to the usual few people that leave during an album release, this isn't just one or two fans jumping ship, this is, like you said, a helluva lot (pretty much 95% of my Coldplay friends are dissatisfied to varying levels from "oh shit this song is pretty awful I hope it was just a bad dream" to completely ready to give up on them altogether) and whilst there has been tension during every release it has never ever been like this.

there's nothing wrong with evolution

this is not an evolution
