October 11, 201114 yr Very nice to read. Thanks for posting. But why do some people here think more synths and strings = more pop music? This is absolutely stupid. MX is just the era where those elements fit an. They wanted to work with those sounds and they did it perfectly. Im also not a friend of the idea that Rihanna is singing in Princess Of China. But that does not mean it´s a pop song. It´s the same song as most of you loved before, just with a new voice in it in addition. A new voice, that Chris Martin wanted to have in there. So it´s not without reason and it does not mean that Coldplay becomes more popish or something. Its still the same Coldplay as in Viva La Vida, just with a new style. And finally: Its just childish that any song, which has some electronic parts, is written by Eno... of course he helps out. But those songs are from Coldplay with a little extra touch from Eno. You all loved The Escapist or the beginning of Life In Technicolor... this was Eno´ish, too. Just like this. You have to give up your thought "If a song has X or Y in it, its pop music. End of story" Cause it´s not. What I want to say: It´s still Coldplay, it´s still brilliant and it´s not 1% more pop music than ever before. And please let me qoute Chris Martin: "When Chris and Jonny were asked about their transition to pop they responded: "We're just making what we want to make. We were making what we wanted to make back in 1999, and we're doing the same thing now. Yellow is probably our most pop song, and that's on our first record. Maybe. We don't want to keep making the same record, so some people like one record, some people like another record. Our first priority is to make something that sounds cool. And, speaking of albums I can listen to in one sitting: THE KING OF LIMBS <3 This seems to be another short, fun album, and I love these kind of albums: ones that have a concept, a theme, but aren't bloated and long. I just sat through the whole of Achtung Baby again today. Hell it was bliss.

Pop music isn't confined to the world of synths, drum machines and cheesy guest appearances. It just refers to music that is popular, or aimed at the public. A Rush of Blood to the Head certainly isn't avant-garde, so there's really nothing else to call it. Anyway, I prefer to listen to all albums in one sitting, if possible.

October 11, 201114 yr Yeah, Coldplay fans on this forum have a hard time wrapping their head around the fact that Coldplay are pop. This probably has to do with the desire to reject the masses liking the album, but the masses liked their first four albums as well. Coldplay have, and will likely always be, a pop band. They make music to please crowds. People want to think of Pop as the most mainstream portion of society. That's not what it is. It's music that is popular. This isn't easy to define, so there are segments. Lady Gaga is someone who is probably more popular than Coldplay. But just so you know, everyone in the world has heard of Coldplay. Right now they are the biggest band in the world. You don't get that title without writing Pop music.
October 11, 201114 yr I really like ETIAW - I think Coldplay needed a song like that. However, I wasn't expecting it to be considered by some the best song in the album. With regard to other descriptions I don't see it in this way. Ok, he/she said it but look at the little text about Charlie Brown or Us against the world. For me, both are better than the one about ETIAW.

October 11, 201114 yr I'm sure that I will struggle to finde any musical genre which fits for the album after hearing. Look at PoC, then on U.F.O or UATW, Hip-Hop and acoustic, look at Hurts like Heaven/Major Minus and ETIAW, rock and dancesynthpop... its a collection of all different kinds of music which will be selled extremely. So, in the end, its pop, because pop means popular and if 10.000.000 people+ buy the album we can definitely say it is pop. But its not mainstream pop like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry.

So we can call pop as well Nirvana, Metallica, Genesis, Guns'n'Roses, because hey, they've sold even more! Though something like punk or hard rock sounds too different from pop. So I prefer calling Coldplay mainstream soft-rock. Pop for me is the likes of Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, Britney Spears.. you know, three chords and stupid silly lyircs (.. I want your love, love, love love I want your love... roma-ro-ma-ma ga-ga u-la-la:dozey: ). So far CP don't have songs consisting of "coldplay u-la-la", so we can safely call them soft-rock, with some dance-y hip-hop influences on the last album. That's IMHO, by the way,
October 11, 201114 yr I would say that coldplay aren't mainstream. There too good to be labelled mainstream. I would say some of the things they do are beyond mainstream, they are better than that!
October 11, 201114 yr I swear this "argument" appears every couple of days so this is the last time I'm going to respond: 1) Pop isn't necessarily bad - some of the best songs in the past decade have been "pop" songs. Examples: Umbrella, Bad Romance, Crazy in Love, Can't Get You Out of My Head, etc. 2) Mainstream isn't necessarily bad - just because a band or musical artist commands a wide audience doesn't suddenly make them bad. I'd argue Radiohead is relatively "mainstream" but does that somehow diminish their body of work? 3) At the end of the day, do these musical genres really matter? Are you more inclined to like a song if it's considered indie rock?
