Article: Man, I Used To Really Love Coldplay

Featured Replies

^ Exactly what I wondered when I read the article ! Like "why post this", there's no argument, no news, no interviews, no whatev. The only "cute" part was when I talks about him being a student and printing the lyrics. Amazing.

There seems to be a trend, that people that earnestly "hate" Coldplay, hates them for impractical or refutable reasons. This "post" (was this from a blog?) seems to be a "just cause I think it" kind of post. These naysayers are having an increasingly hard time proving their [flawed] points... imo.

You are all so stupid, every single of one you. Hey! I like every album except Mylo Xyloto but you gotta understand his pain about when you really like an artist and wait for them to get amazing material that you will like that you hope will (not sound like that dumb joke that everybody uses, Parachutes 2.0) but along the lines of the first two. I think its good to read opinions other than your own.

Erm, I don't think you realise how hypocritical you sound here. You want people to accept others opinions, yet you turn around and say that some other forum members are "stupid" for having an opinion other than your own...

But its the internet and people can post any ideas they want, if you all don´t care then why did the OP post it in the first place?

You'd have to ask the OP that.;)

Seriously though, it's a bit ridiculous not to expect such an article to get a largely negative reception here.

B/c I'm not afraid of opposing opinions. 1x a week, I turn on Fox News just to make sure I'm not wrong about them.

Just had some strawberry shortcake yogurt and it was amazing.

Just to let us know. It may not have been the best thing to post, but we are indeed having a crisis on opinions. People think what they want because they have the free will to. Do we dare say they are wrong because it does not fit our own person view? I believe, in my opinion the answer is no. So lets enjoy the rest of the day and move on peacefully. :P

Please don't call other people stupid for having an other opinion than you, thanks.

I'm sure people can handle it, they're not schoolchildren, and besides

my brain's melting at the stupidity

OH MY GOD! They've evolved! Save us!

slight irony imo

Sorry, was that an article, featuring explicit and in-depth analysis and portrayal of an argument, or merely a collection of statements offering nothing whatsoever? I'm sure it is the latter.

How about this:

It's not so much what he said (though plenty of people do disagree with him). He makes sweeping generalizations, passes off his personal opinion as "Ironclad fact", and generally writes in a snarky, sarcastic tone that puts people off. Some people like Coldplay's later material, some don't. Listen to the part you like, and don't put down others for liking the part that you don't.

No band owes it to people to keep making a certain kind of music, and no one's forced to listen to music they don't care for. Everyone wins if everyone just leaves each other be.;)

yeah, for me this is the main problem with the article. like, i can point out weak spots in Parachutes and AROBTTH, too...

Actual lyric: "Please, please, please/Come back and sing to me/To me/Me"

Actual song title: Life is for Living

but that alone doesn't make them sucky albums.

i guess what i mean is that it's fine for people to dislike the new stuff and only love the older stuff, but it feels like some people (the person who wrote the article, for example), bash the new stuff and act as if the older stuff contains absolutely no imperfections whatsoever.

I think for some people, or many people, it's easier to hate on something they're disappointed with than to take it as it is, like lafinion said, and just 'like it less' than an artist's previous work. I'm not saying that's wrong - I understand it, but I do think they can get carried away in their hate.

Obviously this guy felt like he needed to write it down, not because he's like 'look how stupid they are lollooolll' but because deep down, he's hurt and feels nostalgic. (Yes I'm being melodramatic, but I'm also right.) Like Lauriane said, he has all the right in the world to post it online, even if the article is childish. It's up to us if we choose to read it/post it somewhere else/comment on a forum.

Personally I'm disappointed more than I am happy with Mylo Xyloto and it took me a while to accept it. Sometimes it hits me how great they used to be compared to now and I feel like laughing at them for choosing the obvious direction (which also is a way to hide my musical pain, because yes, it can actually hurt).

On the other hand, live concerts are arguably more important than the music itself and Coldplay are at the top of their game right now, which is why I'm still an obsessed fan. That and I like Paradise.

There's a difference in mocking the article's arguement (which is what the quotes you find ironic are doing), and calling other posters stupid.

I'm not saying it shouldn't have been posted here, just that it's a bit silly IMHO to expect it to get a reception other than the type it got. After all, this is a Coldplay fan site, you have to expect most posters are not going to respond well to something like this post.

i think part of the problem too is that people are attracted to different aspects of Coldplay's music. so while some people may be disappointed with MX because it veers from what they liked about the older albums, there are others who care more about a different aspect which hasn't changed, and then it becomes difficult for the sides to understand why the other likes this music which seems so different, or doesn't like the music which seems the same.

like, i can see that there are parts of MX which aren't the best, and i can understand why people don't like those parts, but i can also see the same or similar imperfections in the older albums as well. you may listen to them now and think about how great they used to be, but to me they haven't really changed, because whatever i must have liked about them back then is still in their music today.

so sometimes people will say, "oh, they've changed so much" and i just think, "really???" :P but if i posted that and didn't think about what the other person was trying to say and they didn't think about what i was trying to say, then it could easily lead to an argument.

i was thinking about this article today. i think what we all need to realize is that the same way some of us don't like or are not really happy with one album or the other doesn't mean that others can't feel the same way. what this guy is saying is that he didn't like the last albums after AROBTTH. it's not like he categorically said that he hated the first two as well. the only dividing line between us and this guy is that he is no longer sure whether he can call himself a coldplay fan whereas we are quite sure of what EXACTLY we feel about coldplay. It's not as if he likes one sound either. We might as well say the same thing about ourselves if we say that "their last album really sucked but the others were, i mean, SPLENDID!!" - the other albums can then fall under the same "One Sound" category, can't they?

Taking a cue from Destrokk, I'll say let's just like what we like!!! :P

By that, there is a difference between calling an argument stupid and people stupid

Where I was quoting, it is pretty much directed at the author

Bottom line is, music critics are interesting but if you like a band, don't worry yourself about them. We all have different tastes. I used to make fun of people who liked Bieber etc but not anymore.

I don't make fun of Bieber fans, I just feel sorry for them

If you don't like them anymore, move on. There's plenty of fans who still love them and always will.

That's not the point.

Please, explain

Sounds like his music palate is very limited. Someone who only like one type of song, shouldn't write music articles!

That's a big assumption to make.

Seriously? There has been relatively few personal attack on this thread IMHO.

Meh. I hate MX and I hate a pretty decent chunk of Viva, but I can go back and listen to Parachutes and AROBTTH, and they're just as good as ever. So as someone who thinks that the band does indeed suck now, the answer is no, they haven't always sucked.

That said, I'm surprised a professional blogger is writing an article like this now instead of 8 months ago when venting off steam about MX was a lot more relevant.

Fair enough, but I guess I still have an issue with anyone making the statement that any music is objectively "bad", when such a qualification is entirely dependent on one's personal tastes. I'd have been fine with "Why I No Longer Like Coldplay", because that's a supportable statement.

What makes this article so special? We've been through 'Coldplay have changed, in a good/bad way' rant already. I think because it's an article people think it should get more attention than a random user who enters similar post should.
