5 common criticisms of Coldplay (and why they're wrong)

Featured Replies

I'm surprised that not as many people eager to defend their interest in Coldplay have crawled out of the woodwork as I expected, hopefully people have learned you don't really need to justify why you like something all the damn time.

At point 5, why would you take someone seriously with that sort of complaint anyway? Jeez.

Still, I find it interesting there is one argument I feel has been left out - that Coldplay rely too much on their 'oooh's, 'aaah's and 'laaalaalaa's (or that sort of thing anyway), which I feel can be a very valid point even if it is almost signature for it to pop up somewhere on a song by now

^ maybe the 'oooh's and 'aaah's and so on are considered lyrics?

now, i'm sure getting bullied for liking Coldplay is probably better than getting bullied for most other things, but it can still get to the person being bullied. i don't think the author intended for this to be a rebuttal against all professional critiques of Coldplay, more like a "please stop teasing me for liking them" statement. whether or not it's effective/sounds immature is of course another issue. :P

I think bullying's bullying, there shouldn't be "better" types.

My sister was bullied by her own friends at school because she liked different music. They all listened to typical teenage girl stuff; Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, people who are considered cool by 4Music or whatever. She liked Coldplay, Radiohead and had a fanatical devotion to Alex Turner and Arctic Monkeys. She was bullied for it to the degree that she kept her Tumblr secret from all of her mates - even though she was really proud of it - and only talked about the things she was interested in with strangers online, and her family. That's just really sad, having to be a different person at school.

Ultimately, there are people in this world who like to think that they have a superior opinion to everyone else, and there are people who don't have thick enough skin to be told that one of their passions in life is a pile of steaming horse shit, or whatever.

I personally think any article that makes any attempt to stand up for the latter, is a good thing.

But Sigur Rós also uses "uuuuuu"'s and "aaaaaa"s and sounds I can even type. Why do people care so much about the lyrics? Isn't the melody mostly what stays in your head later on?

Not gonna enter the argument about whether Coldplay are this or that. I love them, they are brilliant for me, the end.

The only point I'll make is that the people criticisng Coldplay are the people with thousands upon thousands of posts on a website called "coldplaying". They spend their lives posting on an off-topic forum. Lol. :laugh3:

^ What about them having posted here a lot when they were still into Coldplay?

But what was your point again? 'Lol.' ? I don't get it.

Yeah, and in most Radiohead songs we can't understand at least half of what Thom Yorke sings, doesn't make them less epic, does it ?

Hehe, yeah. What losers!

Apologies if I have missed something here Reilly - I'm a little confused, so perhaps you could help. What kind of person has the time to make 35,576 posts on the forum of a band that they disklike so?

99% of the posts I make are on the General Discussion forums, but occasionally I see a title of a Coldplay topic that makes me take interest. As for what kind of person? Any type of person, even when I had very little time to be on here I'd still get 5-10 posts a day, over a long period of time the 35k builds up very easily, as some days I could make up to 40 or 50, not often though.

Just so you're aware, you didn't actually make a point there. But I guess you're trying to imply that those of us who come on to "Coldplaying" with the intention to discuss general topics, debates over religion, philosophy, sports, etc. or even just talk casual crap, are somehow more pathetic than the dedicated army who come on to discuss every article and quote that has ever involved a band, and ensure that every picture of said band on tumblr is quickly transferred into some relevant fangirl thread on this forum and will only be relevant until the next batch of photos posted an hour later.

I've learned a lot of different things from this forum that have changed my way of thinking, to mention just a few posters like Braddock, Tnspieler, Imke, and many down the years, on and off this forum, have made me look at certain things that apply to life, not just one band, in different ways. So I guess that's a worse way to spend time then writing daily what my favourite Coldplay Song of the Day is.

Of course I'm exaggerating the average day of a Lounge user and a Coldplay forum user, and I'm not saying either way of using the forum is worse, but there certainly can be just as much value in a general discussion forum regardless of the main reason it was created, so I don't really get the logic of what you're lol'ing at.

i cannot understand how people could argue this extensively over the internet! must get pretty exasperating after a while. how do you guys keep it up?!

Coldplaying is more than just "Coldplay" and if you haven't figured that out yet then... lol on you? smh:|

One thing is missing here : Coldplay as gay band

never ending story

i cannot understand how people could argue this extensively over the internet! must get pretty exasperating after a while. how do you guys keep it up?!

I'm asking myself the same thing. I always imagine then how funny it would be if said people would stand face to face in RL, I believe no one would say anything because it's

FUCKING

EMBARRASSING

:cheesy:

and now everybody chill the hell down and listen to some music you like

Which/what 'argument' are you referring to?

We should all become Silencers and lock up all the people who bring their ridiculous anti-Coldplay rants onto a Coldplay forum, more directly the Coldplay section:P

Seriously though, you'll go "bla bla bla my opinion guh grow up" but really you're just hear to tick of the Coldplay fans. It's some kind of weird complex people have over the Internet, they are entertained by getting people worked up. It's not about your "opinion" or whatever, you're just being annoying. You only have to post 1 thing for us to understand your opinion. You don't like Coldplay. We get it. You don't need to post why everyone's wrong and your views are valid. Nobody cares what you think just like I'm sure you don't care about what they think, so just stop. You're taking up valuable space on Ian's servers....

oh, sure, bullying is bullying no matter what. i'm sure there are plenty of people like your sister, who don't feel comfortable being themselves around the people they know in person just because they're afraid of being judged (i'm like that myself).

i just meant that liking Coldplay is probably not going to get you physically beaten up or anything like that. people can be more cruel about certain things than others, and i feel like this would be on the lesser end of the spectrum.

if they wanted to get people worked up, they'd just come in here and say "coldplay is dumb lol" and leave it at that. but these guys are actually presenting their opinions in a calm manner. there's no real reason for so many people to get super defensive about it.

That doesn't get people agitated though. It's the whole act of wanting to make an argument. This article is completely harmless, it is someone's opinion so all those people who disagree with it and then say they are just stating their opinion are being complete hypocrites. The argue, quite violently as I see it, against the article but when people argue against them they get all ticked off. Like their opinion is something special or something. Really. Like I said in my earlier post, you only gotta post once to get your opinion across. All this extra banter of saying why other people are wrong is stupid, and quite frankly, a waste of time.

I come to the Coldplay section to read about Coldplay but all I ever see are these arguments. It really ruins it for me actually. I don't want to come in here and see hate, but all over the internet it's all I see. Arguments are gonna come up, I get that, it's the internet after all. But it's just too much now. You don't agree, you can post that and leave don't start World War 3 in the Coldplay section. Honestly though I don't see why people need to post their opinion. Maybe that's just me. It may go back to what I said before, that people want to say something they know will get people angry. I don't know, and I really don't care. Take the anger elsewhere people. This is a music forum, not the debate team or something.

Even if it's a little (or even really) annoying, I don't think they're trying to get everyone upset, I think they just want to express what they think. And anyways, if you respond to them, they'll want to defend themselves and their opinion, and that's why this keeps going on and on.

Awesome article. Definitely something to shut up the haters with!

What rant? Reilly stated his opinion in one post. Nobody died, he wasn't militant, I have no idea what anyone on this page is talking about.

Seriously though, you'll go "bla bla bla my opinion guh grow up" but really you're just hear to tick of the Coldplay fans.

Who is you, and how do you back up your assumption? (and don't pretend like I'm trying to start an argument. The whole point of human communication is to share ideas. We state our beliefs, and then back them up with reasons. It's not hate, it's civil human dialectic. )

It's some kind of weird complex people have over the Internet, they are entertained by getting people worked up. It's not about your "opinion" or whatever, you're just being annoying.

You're obviously channeling some past experience with trolls, but I don't see how what you're saying here has anything to do with this thread. Who is getting worked up? Who is getting entertained?

For the love of God, who are you talking to?

(see above)

I don't think you know what that word means.

The argue, quite violently as I see it, against the article but when people argue against them they get all ticked off. Like their opinion is something special or something.

Haha, yeah. Those stupid idiots with their minds and their opinions. How dare they defend what they think. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go share my right opinion to the world.

Really. Like I said in my earlier post, you only gotta post once to get your opinion across. All this extra banter of saying why other people are wrong is stupid, and quite frankly, a waste of time.

What irks me is how so often people look at a perfectly interesting, adult discussion of opposing ideas, and act like cities will start burning if they keep talking. You paint people who keep talking during a disagreement like they're malicious monsters, when neither party is, and no one is actually upset or offended.

LISTEN WORLD: If someone disagrees with you on a matter, there's nothing wrong with asking 'Why do you believe that?' Or even, when you witness someone making an irrational judgment, demonstrate the irrationality of their thought in a calm, mature fashion. Dammit this is the internet, there are no fistfights here. If you're afraid of talking about your opinions. Grand! But don't complain when others do, or ask questions you about your opinions.

I come to the Coldplay section to read about Coldplay but all I ever see are these arguments.

No, you don't. You really don't. I've been here much longer than you, and know that 99% of the coldplay section is cheesy, cheery monotonous fandom. There is more to read about how great coldplay is on this forum than you could read in your lifetime.

It really ruins it for me actually. I don't want to come in here and see hate, but all over the internet it's all I see.

Where is the hate? You mean the extraordinarily rare voiced opinion that disagrees with yours? This hatred you see is a fiction.

Arguments are gonna come up, I get that, it's the internet after all. But it's just too much now.

There literally is no argument going right now except for people disagreeing with your opinion that the world is going to the hell because of a contrary opinion that stopped being talked about 2 pages ago.

You don't agree, you can post that and leave don't start World War 3 in the Coldplay section.

I really don't think your use of 'you' actually refers to anyone. And there's not even a thumbwar going on. If so, please show me, because you seem pretty emotional about something invisible to me.

Honestly though I don't see why people need to post their opinion.

Is that a serious questions? Why are you posting yours? That's why.

^This is exactly what I'm talking about. How long did that take you to write? I could go in and respond to how everything your saying is taking my point out of context or whatever but I don't have time for that and it just escalates the problem that I wish would stop. I will not be a part of this bickering sorry.

And by the way I do come here to read about Coldplay, and I really don't see why you don't believe that. Why else would I come to the Coldplay section of a Coldplay forum? Not to read this stuff that's for sure....

I don't think you know what that word means.

Clearly neither do you. But again I don't want to make this any worse, or become part of the problem, so I am leaving this thread, and will probably not see any further replies :escaping:

Does anyone else think this has got out of hand?

I feel like people are making a bigger deal out of all this than it should be. :\

^This is exactly what I'm talking about. How long did that take you to write?

LOL (not an evil laugh, just a haha). Please don't think the only reason I would take time to write a detailed reply to someone is because I hate their guts. Believe it or not, some people (yes, me) are actually interested in these things and enjoy talking about them. This isn't a competition, I'm not trying to hurt you. I simply believe that truth is a valuable thing, and the most effective way of reaching it is by sharing ideas and pointing out inconsistencies.

I could go in and respond to how everything your saying is taking my point out of context or whatever but I don't have time for that and it just escalates the problem that I wish would stop.

You see, this makes me sad. I want to know for my sake how I broke the rules of common discourse. The worst thing you can probably say to anyone is, 'you're wrong, and I refuse to tell you why. ' That just doesn't solve anything.

I will not be a part of this bickering sorry.

What bickering? Did I call you names? We're talking like adults. At school we do this for fun. I will voluntarily send you a webcam video of me at this moment if it will convince you that I am in a particularly light mood this evening.

And by the way I do come here to read about Coldplay, and I really don't see why you don't believe that. Why else would I come to the Coldplay section of a Coldplay forum? Not to read this stuff that's for sure....

Did I say you don't? *looks back* Oh, sorry, I was unclear. I was responding to the 'but all I ever see are these arguments' part.
