April 9, 201214 yr Real Madrid reeling after disappointing draw against Valencia as Barcelona prepare to pounce Jose Mourinho's men were held at home in a goalless game on Sunday, and their third draw in five matches has seen their lead cut from 10 points to four in La Liga It is cold in Catalunya, the joke went. After Barcelona lost to Osasuna on a frosty February night in Pamplona, Real Madrid's lead at the top of La Liga reached double figures. Minus 10 in Barcelona, fans of the capital club chuckled. But now it is their own side who are freezing - and it is no laughing matter any more. Madrid threw everything at Valencia on Sunday evening in a game they had looked destined to win with effortless enjoyment; Cristiano Ronaldo was primed for his 50th goal of the season and Jose Mourinho's men were meant to be moving six points clear at the top of the table once again. But it was not to be. Valencia dignified La Liga as they matched Madrid for long periods, stubbornly shutting out the home side with disciplined defending around their penalty area and even missing several outstanding opportunities of their own in an electric encounter. Goalkeeper Guaita was the hero for the visitors as he produced a number of sublime stops to deny Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria, while both sides rattled the woodwork in a match disputed at a fierce tempo by two teams completely committed to the task in hand. For Valencia, set up intelligently by the much-maligned Unai Emery, that meant defending deep in a line across the Madrid area, allowing Real's forwards the ball outside the box but suffocating the space around Guaita's goal. Unable to break the borders of this balky boundary, reminiscent of Mourinho's Inter at times, Madrid were reduced to long-range efforts or quick counterattacking moves. They huffed and they puffed, but they just could not blow away a Valencia side fresh from thrashing AZ in the Europa League on Thursday. With their forwards frozen out, Madrid needed inspiration from the middle. Valencia had done their homework, though, and the tight line of black shirts across the area meant something subtle was required to rupture the resistance of the valiant visitors. Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira, however, were frustrated figures. The Basque sets the tone and the pulse of the play for Madrid, but his influence is invariably further back in a deeper, albeit dynamic, role. The German, meanwhile, is more about toil than technique. Neither looked likely to provide the kind of filtered through-ball needed to split the Valencia back line and create the much-needed breakthrough. The lack of a midfield maestro remains a weakness in Madrid's armoury, while the inability to call upon a Plan B has hurt the capital club in recent times. They need a Xavi or an Iniesta. Or a Cesc. In retrospect, Nuri Sahin may have been the solution on Sunday, although the Turk has featured sparingly in his first season at Real. Regardless of the personnel involved, it should have sufficed. Referee Clos Gomez was under the spotlight as he failed to spot Victor Ruiz holding back Ronaldo in the area and also stamping on the heel of the Portuguese as he raced clear in the second half. The first of those looked like a penalty, while the second should have brought a red card for the Valencia defender. Neither were easy to spot, though, with the game in full flow. Benzema also pleaded for a spot-kick, while Ruiz was grappled by Pepe at the other end as Valencia appealed for their own, and there was an alarming incident as the Portugal defender kicked team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa on the shin, apparently believing him to be Valencia's Pablo Piatti. Not that kicking out at the Argentine would excuse such behaviour. After the match, Aitor Karanka stood in for Mourinho in the press conference and claimed everyone in the stadium had seen how his side had been 'persecuted' by the match officials. None of the decisions were clear at first glance, though, and Madrid should be rather more concerned by their faltering form, in any case. While Barca have saved their best run of results for the final few months of the campaign, with nine victories in succession in La Liga, Madrid are making hard work of a title tilt which had looked theirs just a few weeks ago. With three draws in their last five league games, the advantage for Mourinho's men has been cut from 10 to eight to six and now to four points - and with a Clasico clash to come at Camp Nou later this month as well. Lose that and there would only be a point separating the two teams going into the last four rounds of the championship, but Madrid must first ensure they arrive in Catalunya with their four-point lead still intact. And that means Wednesday's derby date at Atletico will assume immense importance. Only a win at the Vicente Calderon will do. Mourinho, meanwhile, now faces his greatest challenge since arriving at the Bernabeu. Morale must be raised and spirits strengthened as Madrid prepare for a battle they can ill-afford to lose. Relinquish La Liga and there may just be no way back for this side after such a severe psychological setback. So deep down, there will be concern for the Portuguese. "We were a little bit anxious," explained Emilio Butragueno after the game on Sunday in a television interview. And that was clearly the case. Indeed, it begs the question: Without a league title since 2007-08 and punished perpetually by Barca in recent seasons, do Madrid actually believe they can be the best this time around? And can they overcome the psychological stigma of several second-placed finishes, especially given their stuttering shows over the last month? The next few weeks will provide the answers. For his part, Barca coach Pep Guardiola claimed there was no way back for his side in the Primera Division this term after they went 10 points behind their fiercest foes in February. "We are going to fight until the end," he said. "But we can't catch Madrid - and we are not going to win La Liga." April 9, 201214 yr El Clasico clash brought forward Barcelona's game with Real Madrid at the Nou Camp has been brought forward by a day to April 21, Madrid have confirmed. The El Clasico clash, which will take place between the two legs of the Champions League semi-finals, has been moved from Sunday to Saturday. Barcelona travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the first leg of their last-four meeting three days earlier on Wednesday April 18, with the return fixture on Tuesday April 24. Madrid face Bayern in the other semi-final on April 17 and 25.
