Unless it's your team that has accomplished something magnificent everything in football, everything pales into insignificance to the likes of seeing Bolt, Farah, Hoy etc achieve great things. No disrespect to Manchester City or Chelsea, but them winning the Premier League and the Champions League respectively will be a mere footnote come the end of the year celebrations of the last 12 sporting months. And it probably deserves to be that way seeing where football is these days. I guess it comes down to two things. There's sport...and then there's football.

Also I'm finding the broad sweeping generalisations of all footballers as pure mindless idiots who don't lift a finger, from the top to the bottom of any league including the Premier League is mainly professionals who at some stage have worked hard to get where they are, and for those trying to break into any first time are definitely still working hard. Of course the ones who stand out in the media and because of their natural talent, on the pitch, are often the most overpaid with the largest egos, if you want that to ruin your enjoyment then that's your choice. Either you're overestimating the amount of work Olympians put in, or underestimating the amount of work footballers put in, Jessica Ennis doesn't train 40 hours a week and Balotelli doesn't just run about a pitch as a sub for a half hour every fortnight. I'm just not as passive when it comes to issues like these. I think it's totally fair to regard the action of some footballers as repulsive. However I do not think all are like that. My favourite ever player is also one of my top sport stars - Dirk Kuyt. I'm sure there are many other players like Dirk but they are sadly overshadowed by many of their fellow players like John Terry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney etc.

 

And of course the Premier League is a let down in comparison to the Olympics. It offers some fantastic matches but it doesn't match the hype it deserves. Not even Man City's last gasp heroics can match the likes of Mo Farah winning gold or even (just to prove it isn't just the Olympics) Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France. Emmanuel Adebayor completes £5m move to Tottenham

 

Emmanuel Adebayor has completed a £5m move to Tottenham Hotspur from Manchester City.

 

The Togo striker impressed during a loan spell with Spurs last season, scoring 17 Premier League goals.

 

Adebayor will be among the top-earners at White Hart Lane, but City will subsidise the 28-year-old's wage, having paid him £175,000 per week.

 

The former Arsenal man revealed the news on Twitter: "Tottenham here I come! I'm hungry for goals. Get ready."

 

Adebayor had two years to run on his City contract, having been sent out on loan for most of the previous two seasons to Real Madrid and then Spurs.

 

"I am pleased to be signing for Spurs on a permanent basis after finally agreeing my departure with Manchester City," Adebayor added.

 

"It may have taken longer than expected but I am delighted to be back at Tottenham Hotspur. I really enjoyed my time here last season and I am hoping we can achieve great things together again."

 

It is understood Spurs refused to break their strict wage structure to accommodate Adebayor. But with the player refusing to accept a big pay-cut, the Premier League champions were forced to accept having to continue to pay the player the difference between his new wage of around £80,000 and his earnings at City in order to complete the deal.

I've barely mentioned England, Spain and the Euro's. I can't talk for La Liga or Serie A but I can talk for the Premier League. This isn't a matter of "they're successful so they are appropriately paid and very useful" and "they're unsuccessful so are overpaid and useless". Who wins or loses does not come into it and I've never stated that. If England won the Euro's it would make absolutely no difference at all as would be the case if Team GB absolutely failed. It's an image issue I'm talking about relative to other sports. The Olympics is just a very good time to bring up this argument again but it doesn't stop with the Olympics. It goes as far as comparing F1 to footballers and when you see that our f1 stars like Jenson Button (who is massively respected) don't have anywhere near the problems as the likes of Balotelli, John Terry, Ashley Young etc then there is a problem. The Olympics merely provided the greatest contrast.
