While Jack Rodwell was potentially part of a new generation of young English footballers, I still think he had a lot of growing to do to meet that potential. Well all that's ruined now, he can hope his development continues when his City contract is up and he goes back to a team where he might actually play.

As far as I can tell Deuce was never or rarely included on the pre-season squads. Dempsey tweeted that "There are two sides to the story" and "The truth will come out soon". Cannot stand players who refuse to play for their club when they bleed their accounts dry for people like Dempsey's services. Disgraceful behaviour. Anyhow the Premier League is back tomorrow (yay or nay? It's a hell of a climb down after the Olympics and it has really not made me so hungry for football or it's image). Two Manchester clubs have got stronger. Manchester United have got stronger by buying but I'd expect Man City to be twice as strong mentally this season after winning the league. City have got Ferguson by the throat here. If they can't finish him off this season then nothing will. I would expect them to defend their title and win it with less drama than last season.

August 18, 201213 yr So you'd rather, no football? I don't have any real hunger for it at the moment in all honesty. Yes, I look forward to West Brom v Liverpool tomorrow and seeing the start of what I hope will be a progressive and new era for the club but outside of that I don't have as great an interest in it at the moment. No doubt it will get back to a more usual level of enthusiasm but that Olympics effect has taken it's toll. Unless it's your team that has accomplished something magnificent everything in football, everything pales into insignificance to the likes of seeing Bolt, Farah, Hoy etc achieve great things. No disrespect to Manchester City or Chelsea, but them winning the Premier League and the Champions League respectively will be a mere footnote come the end of the year celebrations of the last 12 sporting months. And it probably deserves to be that way seeing where football is these days. I guess it comes down to two things. There's sport...and then there's football.

But ex-Manchester City forward Rodney Marsh predicts the Blues will retain their Premier League crown despite losing out in the race for the £24m Dutch striker. Sir Alex Ferguson's side lost their title last season to big rivals City on goal difference and will see the arrival of Van Persie, 29, as significant on the eve of the new season. However, Marsh still regards City as favourites and thinks United's capture of Van Persie has a hint of "desperation" about it. "Van Persie is Ferguson's last-ditch effort to reclaim the title back from Manchester City," Marsh told BBC Sport. "It tinges a touch of desperation on Manchester United's part based on the fact that they have spent an incredible amount of money for an ageing player." Marsh, who scored 36 goals in 118 appearances for Manchester City between 1972 and 1975, also believes the signing shows the size of the threat posed to 70-year-old Ferguson by Mancini, 47. And he says the move to United for former Arsenal striker Van Persie is a mistake. Marsh believes Ferguson is reaching the end of his career and the Scot will not be in charge for the length of Van Persie's four-year deal, whereas Mancini will be around for much longer. "I thought Ferguson did fantastically to get United within one game of winning the title last season," Marsh said. "But I do feel that he's looking at Mancini and the players that City have, and he's like a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat trying to compete. More power to him, because I'm his biggest fan, but it does seem he is now threatened by the new sheriff in town and he's going to try and slap him down." As well as being favourites to win the Premier League, Marsh thinks Mancini's side can challenge for the Champions League too, despite only signing former Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell so far this summer. In addition to Van Persie, Ferguson has also signed ex-Borussia Dortmund player Shinji Kagawa and Crewe's Nick Powell. Marsh added: "I still feel City are the favourites, they are the team to beat. But when you throw in the wildcard of Van Persie, he is probably the one player that could take Manchester United back to the top. Nothing has changed my mind about Manchester City. Through all the blips and bumps last season, they are still the number one team in the Premier League. August 18, 201213 yr Oh no Burnley 2 - 0 Bolton Martin Paterson and Charlie Austin scored either side of the break for Burnley to ensure Bolton manager Owen Coyle suffered a miserable return to Turf Moor. Coyle left the Clarets in January 2010 and was booed throughout a feisty match, played in an intense atmosphere. Paterson headed the hosts ahead after an almighty goalmouth scramble. And Austin added a second from a pinpoint Junior Stanislas cross from the left wing. Trotters defender Zat Knight had a late header cleared off the line but the visitors were well beaten. Burnley started strongly and almost went ahead through Chris McCann, and they continued to have the better chances. Paterson saw a clever lob hit the top of the net and Dean Marney also went close with a well-struck drive that was saved by Adam Bogdan. Wanderers winger Martin Petrov did volley narrowly over at the other end but the Clarets went ahead when Paterson headed home from close range after blocked shots from both Stanislas and Marney. The hosts continued to threaten after the interval and Austin deservedly made it 2-0 when Austin was left with a simple far-post finish after great work by Stanislas.
