Now I know we can debate what the interviewer said that we might have not heard, but from what I heard I thought he was asking good, if not completely informed questions. I mean, this guy doesn't sound like a Coldplay fan lol, not based on questions, just based on idk, voice/age/demeanor. I think Chris is obviously writes lyrics that are very personal to him, and I think when your putting out an album you've got a lot of pressure and these things must be hitting him a lot (what he wrote about, who he wrote about, etc) and when you have an interviewer maybe getting into that, it might be area he didn't want to venture. I mean, I certainly wouldn't be keen on offering all my thoughts and words to the world without some serious thinking on it, and even if you did, its got to be hard to see them deconstructed in front of you. I don't think it was a slanted interview, I think it was done by a guy who really didn't get Coldplay or give the album a serious listen. It might have been he just had someone tell him about the themes. That's how he acted, kind of informed, but not firsthand.

It's nerves really, and when you think about your words hitting the masses, you probably want to have some control over what those words are going to mean to them, and I think thats why Chris was unhappy the questions were leading, as opposed to open ended. But truly, if they weren't entirely leading would he elaborate, I mean we've all heard how often he dodges or kind of circles questions.

The sexist joke thing was just a plain misunderstanding from a guy who doesn't understand his personality. I don't think the guy was really serious about it though, the way some people wrote about it, it made me think he indicted him for a crime.

All in all it was a pretty useless interview. But I don't think you can blame the interviewer or Chris.

that was hard to listen to...

i think both the interviewer and chris are wrong in the situation. the interviewer obviously didn't lsiten to the labum very well and just took things he heard from other people and tried to make chris say certain things. he wasnt letting chris speak at all, his questions were so one sided and it was like he was answering them for himself.

on the other hand, chris didn't have to take it that personally. he did overreact a little bit i think but i guess that's just how chris. hes very passionate about the things he writes, which makes his music so wonderful to begin with. i think he could've handled it better, but i guess when youre under that kind of pressure you don't have time to think things through before reacting.

gotta give kudos to Will though, he really pulled through for chris. he was able to stay calm and be a little more explanitory (lol is that a word? you know what i mean) to the interviewer

I think you can blame the use of the word sexist. And that didn't come out of Chris's mouth.

Yikes. That was rather awkward.... Well, I think:

a) Chris did not pull off his "melon" joke very well, and it probably wasn't the right place for that joke!

b) That interviewer did seem pretty pushy/ looking for what he wanted to hear, and Chris has said how nervous he was for the album release, so it just wasn't a good mix. Plus I know I'M sick of these questions about the album title, I'm sure they're going insane!

c) There's obviously a lot edited out, so it's hard to understand what went on.

I have to admit it was sort of funny when Will said "I don't think so" when the guy asked if he upset him...

THAT made me so angry!!!

the interviewer calling Chris a sexist was completely unnecessary. You'd think with Coldplay being in the spotlight all the time, he would have caught on to Chris' sense of humor. You could tell that he really shut down after being accused of making a sexist remark, and then the interviewer follows up with a blatant 'so, you guys are really morbid' COMPLETELY missing the point of the album.

While I agree that I think Chris should have stuck around, I'm not surprised if he thought the guy was trying to attack him. There's definitely a tone of complete disinterest coming form the interviewer.

That was a really awkward interview.. I can't say I really heard a pressing reason for Chris to walk out like that. It didn't seem like anything very offensive was said to him. Although I obviously have no idea what's going through his mind and what insecurities he might have. I'm sure his life isn't easy, so who are we to judge his actions.

It feels like something more was said in between, that we didn't hear. Chris' odd actions were very sudden and unusual..

That's the exact moment the interview turned sour, it was fine before that.

What happened after that we just don't know, there's a piece of the puzzle missing somewhere.

Strange... I just hope Chris is alright.

That was just... weird. There's no other word for it... just... weird.

I think Radio 4 may have done a little creative editing - we know Chris can be a bit sensitive about certain subjects... I think maybe there is more that we just didn't hear.

However, I have to say, well done, Will. I'm loving that man more with every interview I read & hear. He's just strikes me as a really considerate, intelligent man.

Such a shame that this had to happen on release day - I was full up on Viva Fever, now I feel a bit flat...

Hmmmm.... I find this all very strange that the US tour has been cancelled for 2 weeks, Chris had apparantly injured himself and now this...... All in the space of a few days.

This was very weird. Chris is under a lot of pressure, I'm sure.

I agree that Chris probably just didn't want to talk so openly about the lyrics when he writes them straight from his heart.

Chris is a private guy, we know that.

The interviewer was a prick though. He was controlling everything about that interview -- from the questions to the answers as well. He'd answer his own question and then force Chris to go on the defensive.

I hope Coldplay is doing OK as a band. It seems like a silly concern, but this is the kind of pressure that hurts a bands will to continue... and if I don't have Coldplay to look forward to for the next ten years, I might as well lose hope in all music.

I think it is safe to say that Chris was getting a certain vibe from this guy...I think Chris's melons joke was his way of trying to get the interviewer to lighten up a bit...so when the interviewer took the joke as a serious statement Chris knew that no matter what he said it was going to be taken the wrong way...

well done by will thats all i have to say

The interviewer was kinda putting the words in Chris' mouth, he's not really asking questions... or maybe the guy had COLDPLAY SUCKS written on his forehead.

I hope this doesn't explode in the press. apparently they have already been playing just the clip of him walking out on Radio 1. thats not really the full story. He shouldn't have done radio interview today. He only respondes well when its fan phone in's. I guess thats why Jo Whiley did one. She learnt from K-Roq.

The guy seemed kind of stand-offish. And like he wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible. I'm not placing the blame on anyone right now, but both Chris and the interviewer didn't seem to be into it.

What a prat the interviewer is. 'Journalistically twisting me'. Bless Chris...he's not comfortable as it is without interviewers buggering him about...how people like that get a job in the media I'll never know.

Uhoh...have they? In what context?

But see? The interviewer prick succeeded in getting some attention to his show by baiting Chris....

There is no such thing as bad press......unless you're Coldplay.

Ohhhh no....surely they can't blame him? The interviewer is Alan Partridge on crack ffs! All he said was he didn't like it, they can't blame him for humility. Any bollocks about storming out just isn't right, he's just uncomfortable with the spotlight and it isn't fair to pick on him for that.

i dunno i just got a call from my drummer saying "So Chris Martins been a bit of a Knob" when i explained he took that back slightly. obviously everyone will run with the "Reluctant pop star storms out of the BBC" headlines...

where can i hear this?

It's Colin Murray on now so he probably thinks it's hilarious!

If it's on Radio 1 it will be in the press by tomorrow.

I hate how some journalists just lack integrity. I said that i wasn't blaming anyone but God damn, it did seem like he was trying to stir up controversy.

This just sucks because I want to be a journalist.
