coldplay live on radio 2 this afternoon, Front Row R4 this evening

You know what he said about making people proud to be Coldplay fans in the playground etc... he might have made that hard to do again...

That's the first thing I thought of when I read this story! My Dad loves ripping in to the bands I love and bless Chris, he gives him lots of material!

For what it's worth, Sky+ (Uk version of TiVo) still lists Coldplay as performers on Jonathan Ross tomorrow.

I've also been keeping an eye on

http://www.digitalspy.com

it's a website that a lot of people who go to TV recordings use. They tend to post spoilers on there...

no mention of a Coldplay no-show yet.

Fingers-crossed!!!

Will did very nicely. :nice:

The interview wasn't a catastrophe, but it wasn't great either. It wasn't even good. This interview made it like their new album isn't that big of a deal. When in reality you knowww they are excited/happy/worried.

Ok, cool. :) Thank you!

Is there any way I can watch it online or what??

Sorry to change the subject.

I don't think you can watch it live as it airs online, but I guess it will be available on http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer after the show has aired (is this available outside the UK?) Either way, Im sure a few people will record it and upload it pretty soon :)

This is what happened:

BBC RADIO 4'S RATINGS ARE DROPPING - THE DJ WAS TOLD BY HIS EDITOR TO CAUSE SOME CONTROVERSY AND GET A REACTION OUT OF MARTIN. THIS THEN LEADS TO CONTROVERSY AND AN INTEREST IN THE STATION

It was a cynical calculated stunt. Martin was a lamb to the slaughter.

That's not really how Radio 4 works. It doesn't need to generate interest. I can't see them ever performing a publicity stunt. It wasn't a cynical calculated stunt.

I'm not sure why Chris went straight to "you're just journalistically twisting what I said" which soured the rest of the interview - perhaps the sexist thing did it. It was a bit harsh, but not unfair - it was (just about) a sexist remark.

I do think the choice of music - lots of bits with death references - was a bit one-sided, but I suppose that - given the topic of mortality in his lyrics - it was relevent.

the bit about the Brits was terrible. Interviewer bassically told them that they hadn't stayed away long enough! nice of him.

I agree with that. Whether it was intentional or not, it wasn't a very good start to the interview.

Anway... I've rewritten this a couple of times and I'm tired, but I think it makes sence.

The first thing I thought of when Chris mentioned melons was sex, but i don't think he intended to be taken that way, and definitely not as a sexist remark. Chris Martin=sexist? I don't think so.

I don't think it was a cynical plot for ratings either, but you can't deny that it will boost them. And why air such a boring/useless interview unless it had something scandalous like Chris Martin apparently throwing a temper tantrum? You have to wonder...

Thank you. :smug2:

The comment about him being sexist was awful. I feel sorry for Chris, he really takes things hard and you just want to tell him how appreciated he is amongst us fans.

wow, i just listened to it now.

wow.

that was really odd.

why would the interviewer be so controversial??

i think JPB is right. they wanted a reaction to get media attention.

i just feel bad for chris. that wasn't really fair for him.

Controversy sells.

Quick question: Was the radio 2 interview pre-recorded and they just decided not to run it, or was it live and they just didn't show up?

he just didn't like the words the interviewer was using at times so.... is that all? or should i read into it a bit more like people seem to like doing these days?

It was a tough interview. The guy wasn't letting Chris away with stuff that other interviewers might have done. And actually, all credit to him for that....however I do think he was being a bit of a dick at some points! lol He clearly hadn't listened to the album, was assuming things from the album title and seemed to forget he was interviewing 2 young guys who like to have a laugh about things and not answer serious questions. I would blame whoever set up the day of interviews for them. It's clearly a bad marketing strategy. Chris doesn't really help the situation though. Given the number of interviews he's had to do in his time, surely that wasn't the worst and he could have stuck it out for the 2 or 3 more minutes that were remaining. BUT I wasn't there and like some of you have said, we don't know what has been edited out!

The whole event makes me a bit sad. Much can be said about the interview thats already been said here, but am I the only one who sees the image of Chris on the ferry back from his uncle's funeral (that we shouldn't have seen) when they think of this? It would be poor research if the interviewer hadn't seen the photo before, especially with the other meticulously researched questions he asked. He probably would have done best staying away from a subject that is a tough one for anybody to deal with, which is only magnified by the fact that it is on radio. Expert damage control from Will though, he really showed a great deal of class in keeping the interview on when he was obviously attuned to Chris' frustration and even anguish.

His use of soundclips was so ignorant. He was definitely trying to wind Chris up.

What an odd interview :( and we can't judge anything because we don't know what really happened. I don't feel good listening to this

Without wanting to sound like im telling everyone they are wrong, and without wishing to sound like im on the interviewers side, i just got the impression that Radio 4 probably wasnt the best platform for Chris to discuss the album. In pretty much every other interview Ive seen him give, Chris likes to make light of the questions thrown at him (you can hear this in the earlier interview on radio 1 today). Hes a pretty funny guy, and i think he enjoys making jokes and comedic remarks etc, and i just feel this interviewers questions were a little heavy for what should have essentially been a day for Chris to enjoy. At one point he says 'im not enjoying this'...i doubt that he and will were briefed about the questions beforehand and he just felt that he'd had enough. You can tell from the start of the interview that Chris is in good spirits. i just feel as it went on he was thinking 'This is a drag, Im bored.' ive been like this in many meetings, and theres nothing worse than being made to answer questions youre not interested in (OR havent prepared for) when all you want to do is crack a few gags. i really dont think that the interviewer offended Chris in any way, he just wasnt having a fun time, thats all.

Being a huge fan of the Beatles, i remember reading John Lennon was not at all a fan of interviews. One of his main reasons for hating interviews was having to explain himself and his choices or lyrics to an old and out of the loop man who thought they understood what music was about. Perhaps Chris felt the same way with this interviewer in that the interviewer did not truly get the essence of what the music is about and made ignorant assumptions on everything to do with the album.

Here's a thought: maye he felt sick???

I definitely don't think he walked out because of boredom -- he's not that dumb. He had to be offended in some way.

It's a shame the press will love this because it's not like he stormed out, he politely walked out and came back.

anyway, I feel bad for Chris, and the interviewer has a million enemies now. haha

Why would he walk out from boredom? There have been many boring coldplay interviews and he didn't storm out, he was polite about it and suffered throught it. I'll just come out and say it: the interviewer was a jackass who obviously a] didn't listen to album b] had someone else write the questions because he has no idea what he's talking about c] didn't want to do the interview.

I think there was probably an element of boredom. Imagine constantly being asked why your music is morbid when that's what you've been specifically trying to avoid for 3 years! It's like the interviewer was trying to piss all over the 'colourful' vibe that the guys have been talking about, trying to say that it's all black and white and boring like some percieve the previous three to be...he's wrong, of course, some parts of the album are so cheerful I can barely believe it's them! I hope this passes without the tabloids picking it up, really, because it's so not Chris' fault and he's going to look like a right twat.

y did chris say 'i always say stupid things....and radio 4 will be the place to remeber that' (not sure that was said like that) so early?? as far as know before he has never said anything stupid on radio 4

they've edited chris to sound like a twat basically. I didn't like the end bit when the interviewer said "reluctant pop star chris martin" It is so obvious they've edited the interview to make chris look bad! :shocked2:

Sorry if it has been posted before (search button is down)

This is what I found in BBC website:

"Chris Martin Crumbles

Singer walks out of interview

12 June 08 - Everything was going well for Coldplay today. Their album Viva La Vida is tipped to go to number one in the album chart after record sales.

But one of the biggest bands in the world seemed to crumble under the pressure during an interview on Radio 4's Front Row tonight.

When asked by presenter John Wilson about the lyrics and imagery on their record, Chris Martin refused to answer Wilson's question and left the studio.

"Did you start with the song Viva La Vida and the idea within that song of the diposed dictator looking back at his life?" asked Wilson. To which Martin replied:

"I'm not enjoying this. Can I have 2 minutes?"

Martin proceeded to leave the studio while John Wilson called after him:

"Are you feeling under pressure?"

"I just don't like talking about things," came Martin's reply as he walked out of the interview.

Wilson continued the interview with drummer Will Champion who insisted that his bandmate wasn't 'upset'.

Chris Martin finally returned to the studio but refused to give full answers and was reluctant to talk in detail about the record.

To hear the full interview you can listen again on the Radio 4 website here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/frontrow

And for a full, tantrum free, interview with Coldplay, tune into Steve Lamacq on 6music from 4 o clock tomorrow."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20080612_chrismartintantrum.shtml :(

He's had a couple of tantrums in the last few days. This really doesn't bode well for a long tour. Hope he's ok.

it just seemed like from the beginning they did not get along. I wonder if they've met and had a problem in the past:thinking:

I hope chris is ok now he shudnt have walked out on the interview tho...

But that interviewer was clearly lookin for a response, basically calling him morbid and a sexist all in one sentence! wtf They shud lay off and give the man a break.. seriously! The band's album is out-he's nervous. Like he always does, he played off the serious questions with jokes. U cant blame him for not being a narcissist and wanting to talk about himself and having to explain the lyrics of the songs etc etc.. The music speaks for itself.

Plus he spent almost all his time earlier apologizing for a crack joke he made on Jo Whiley. He clearly felt bad about the watermelon joke too

*sigh*

LOVE THE ALBUM THO!!!!:D

No one's going to listen to that interview for the answers, they'll listen 'cause it's the one Chris 'stormed' out of.

I don't think Chris and Will should've gone on Front Row really. It's not their 'scene'.
