Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

oh common wtf. some of the fans on this forum are so full of shit that they can't look past their die hard pride for this band. i've loved coldplay since parachutes came out and always tried to take chris n' co. a bit more seriously than most casual fans. but whenever chris talked about plagiarism i couldn't help but roll my eyes cause i knew one day they'd get bit in the ass for the shit they keep pulling. "oh yeah this song is inspired by so n' so...". please i always knew they needed to pull pieces of music out of other songs to create their own. and i tried respecting the ones that came out really good. at this point i feel like i'm done with this band. how in the hell do you expect anyone to respect you if something like this comes up and you just try to pretend like it'll all go away. thats exactly how the biggest in the band in the world might not wanna play this out. not even admit to what you've done like grown ups should? get the fuck outta here. and as fans how in the hell do you sit there trashing this guitarist thats obviously sincere about his intentions and explained the situation in plain english? the guy wrote the song for his wife for god's sake. you don't just steal things like that. sure take some cues from radiohead or munch on a little blur and poop out something like Lost, but don't take something a guy probably cried over while writing and make millions of dollars off of it.

but apparently thats all they're interested in at this point. exactly why i didn't attend both shows they played in my area... $300+ for 16/17 songs? sorry, but i saw radiohead for $60 and they played over 20+ songs, full band. and don't even give me that quality over quantity bs, i went to 3 x&y shows and got the same exact set-list every single time. seeing them again + forking over an extra $200+ just because they're using more lights and standing in the crowd for a couple acoustic renditions? oh fuck off.

i loved it while it lasted, but sorry chris you and your boys just lost a true fan. i'm sure they'll be okay though, with their golden toilet seats and all.

I posted a comment on this earlier in another thread. I found the section, and it is actually applicable to this case. This is a 2006 interview with Thom Yorke of Radiohead. Of course, this may not be well received here because I would bet money that one of the bands he is talking about is Coldplay. Nevertheless, it seems like he understands why and, in the end, roles with the punches pretty well. I thought the last paragraph was especially telling:

Pitchfork: And of course most of the bands that've taken cues from you have done so from things like "High and Dry". Was it ever disappointing that when your peers looked to you guys they ignored Kid A and Amnesiac and took the simpler, more well-traveled road?

TY: But that's the majors all over. "Oh, uh, shit, we need to find something else that looks like it." They spent loads of money and crap and they were right, so I can't argue with them I guess. It's business.

But it upset me a lot, yes. I was really, really upset about it, and I tried my absolute best not to be, but yeah, it was kind of like-- that sort of thing of missing the point completely. When we put Kid A out, I specifically remember saying, "Copy that, you fucking..."

Whatever. We've ripped off R.E.M. blind for years, you know-- amongst other people. Everybody does. It's how you rip them off, as John Lennon said.

So... have you been completely ignoring most of this thread? Do you realise that a lot of what Satriani is claiming doesn't really make sense? Or that he clearly wasn't the first person to use that riff? Or the fact that Coldplay probably isn't allowed to say anything at the moment because EMI is surely working night and day right now to handle it their own way? Or that they're not going to 'admit to what they've done' because, hey surprise, maybe they didn't steal anything?

Just listended to Joe's song and boy does that guy play a mean guitar. :) However, having also listened to countless hours of Coldplay I find it hard to believe that he will actually win this suit, for if that were the case, there would be a line of musicians queuing up behind Joe to have their day in court. And I say that with no malicious intent. I hear snippets of other artists all the time in Coldplay's music. It's alright to admit it. There's a lot of music out there. It can't be helped. Having said that I don't see Bono or Paul and Ringo having a go at the band and they have just as much right as Joe to cast their aspersions on them.

I would hazzard a guess that, with almost absolute certainty, our dear Jonny has heard of Joe. Not only that I would guess that Jonny would give his left testicle to jam with Joe! :laugh3: Now that I'd pay to see.( Not the testicle part. .. ewww. ) From the gist of the article, it appears that Joe was pissed off by Coldplay's failure to respond to his claim and that's what lead him ultimately to sue them. That saddens me because a musician of his stature should have been counselled more wisely by advisors before he embarked on this journey of libelous intent. Whether or not he wins the case, it forms a dark cloud on his horizons.

And more importantly, if this case does go to trial and if it is a juried trial then how on earth are they going to pick a jury? Where will they find 12 people who have not heard of Coldplay and who have not formed some opinion of the band one way or another? Hmmm. This may be their salvation. ;)

$300 for a show? Which ticket website were YOU going to?! I got mine for $60! Did you find them from some guy in a trenchcoat on the side of the street?

And I don't know if you just have selective eyesight, but most of the people on this thread either love Satriani (myself included now after listening to more songs), or respect his guitar legend status (which is rightly deserved).

So go ahead and assume things that haven't even happened (such as the "ripping off" of the song), and let EMI handle this the way it should be handled; behind closed doors like any other litagation instead of having a big media party and dragging a band's name through the mud and making a bad name for yourself and the other person.

Why worry, people? Coldplay = rich, I'm sure they could easily hire the most expensive lawyers in the world and win this case. All from the money the die hard fans pour on these guys.

By the way, which coldplay ticket is $60? Granted I haven't gone to coldplay shows since 2003 but back then, five years ago, I remember paying approx. $60.

$60 was the price I paid for a ticket.

And we pour money onto them because we like them.

Is that how you do things? you don't buy things by people you like? do you just buy things by people you don't like? you don't buy Radiohead albums since you like them?

this is not plagarism. every single youtube clip brought up here pitch adjusts the song, so throw those out.

in the instrumental hook, joe plays a guitar line that for a couple of notes is exactly what Chris sings in the verse, but then the two lines diverge. We've got three verses and a bunch of choruses on the coldplay song (not to mention, the chorus and the satch song don't share anything in common), so if were really looking at this, if the court is going to let youtube guy's "diatonic theory" excuse hold up, there's maybe 10% that is copied. Instrumentation is completely different, and not one person has brought up the issue that Coldplay and Satch's musical phrasing and treatment of these 4-5 notes are completely different. If you don't pitch adjust the song and you play the two on top of each other, you'll see what I'm saying.

but all this is to say: the diatonic theory thing that was being thrown around in here cannot hold up in court. That side holds up that since the progression in the two songs are related and similar - further damning evidence. Coldplay will not get convicted of plagarism if the two progressions USE DIFFERENT CHORDS. Jesus. the chordal backdrop of the songs sound similar, but are not the same. Some people, i.e. me, would say that the chordal movement in the coldplay song is much more satisfying than satch's song.

I respect Mr. Satriani, but this is all about money guys. He saw that same youtube clip and decided to make some money. Satch is not a victim. he has been a massive recording artist and has a massive following. everyone who buys or used to buy guitar technique magazines was in love with him at some point, until you realize the man is brutally short on original improvisation or compositional ideas. (although every christmas I do put on his "Silent Night / Holy Night" because its tons 'o' fun).

ALL CHORDS ARE RELATED THROUGH DIATONIC THEORY, so let's just go ahead and throw that out.

still it's a shame. Kiss those grammies goodbye. Maybe album of the year might still be Coldplay..but no song or record of the year.

Well, Eno is primarily famous for being the "father" of ambient music. He is a singer, composer, and music theorist, not just a producer. I just thought I would make a comparison because they both seem like respectable guys. But yeah, you do have a point that Eno has been producing many other bands and records and it's impossible for him to remember all of them.

Your second point is interesting too and helps Coldplay's position a lot, in my view. I also never heard what ended up happening with that case.

1. hmmm, I think its a little like comparing apples and oranges. Joe Satriani is famous for the work he does for Joe Satriani; Brian Eno is primarily famous for the work he does for several bands.

2. I don't think Brian Eno can catalogue ALL of his influences any better than Coldplay. But it does bring up an interesting point. I remember a few years back the Red Hot Chili Pepper's were taking some heat because "Dani California" displayed some similarities to Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance." The funny thing is that Rick Rubin produced both songs. Do I think that a producer is able to clearly identify every source of inspiration - No (there are just so damn many). Do I think that a producer is able to distinguish the similarities between one project he worked on, Dani California, and another project he worked on, Mary Jane's Last Dance - Yes. BUT THE CHILI PEPPERS STILL TOOK CRITICISM. It just shows me that a lot of these plagiarism arguments are spurious. Of course Rick Rubin would stop the Chili Peppers if he thought they were plagiarizing. No one would know better than a man who worked on BOTH projects. And yet...."no, no, no....the Chili Peppers plagiarized" argument was everywhere.

Coldplay Respond Officially to Joe Satriani

"With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence upon the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours. Coldplay."

Delighted the boys have come out, im sick of Coldplay taking shots all the time!

Will that settle it though?

isn't Joe Satriani's case still going to court?

Damn right.......... :smug:

EDIT:

They are going to court, i don't think is a way to settle, just to let everyone know what they think of the whole thing ;)

okay thanks :)

The whole thing is ridiculous, there is nothing similar to his song and Viva la Vida

Aah I'm glad they finally responded... ^^

We all knew that they did not copy Satriani, but they needed to say it to the public to calm their fans a bit, I guess. :)

See, that's how you do it Joe.

Short and to the point. No over dramatic statements, no talk of broken hearts and songs written for great loves. Respectful, the way it should it be.

Unless Joe can prove that they definitely used his music he has got no chance of winning.

"in parts it sounds like it" is no defence and i like Joe Satriani.

The whole thing is ridiculous, there is nothing similar to his song and Viva la Vida

Well there is a little similarity sadly, but it's just a coincidence.

And I totally agree with you, Mimixxx.

See, that's how you do it Joe.

Agreed. Coldplay's response sounds professional and appropriate.

still it's a shame. Kiss those grammies goodbye. Maybe album of the year might still be Coldplay..but no song or record of the year.

Why would kiss their Grammys goodbye? Why wouldn't they they get record or song of the year?

See, that's how you do it Joe.

I Agree, it shows how mature Coldplay guys are!! I'm so proud of them!!:smug:

Glad i'm not the only one who though Satriani kinda sounded like a sad 16 year old boy on his statement :P

VERY strong statement. I am glad this finally came out :)
