Ever since Joe announced that VLV ripped him off, all his fans have been coming here with all this "proof".....but where were they before that? I mean, if the song is sooooooo fucking obvious, why weren't they all signing up on this forum and bitching from the get go about "how Chris Martin stole that song" the first time they heard VLV. I mean the song was out there........all over the fookin place.......played in every country, but not one single Joe fan noticed. Even after those other blokes, came out with their now admitted publicity stunt accusations, still not one single Joe fan made his way here to accuse the band or state their claim. That story was all over the place and you would think that it would have spurred them on to show up here and start making their own claims, but not a one did. It surely wasn't because they couldn't find this place, I mean once old Joe made his claim, they all found their way here without too much effort. Even if they couldn't find this site, they were talking about all over the web. That shit would have spread like wild fire. Some one would have heard about it. Nope they didn't seem to notice until old Joe pointed it out for them. Or maybe they didn't notice because VLV doesn't sound anything like Joe's song.........noooooo it couldn't be as simple as that now could it. :rolleyes:

If that guy wins this lawsuit ... I don't even know what to do then. This just feels so wrong. Chris said himself that Coldplay's pretty honest about their influences. Why the heck should he just copy someone he doesn't seem to know and then lie about it?

 

And honestly, his own music doesn't seem to mean that much to Satriani, otherwise he wouldn't use it for such attention-whore like stuff.

 

This is all about publicity and money, nothing more ... no matter how often he talks about his broken heart ... (with which he seemed to live pretty fine until the Grammy nominations were announced ... )

I was a skeptic before I saw the youtube videos comparing the melodies and harmonies, and I have to say Coldplay are screwed. It's a shame that it has happened to such a great band and that previous 'likenesses' whether incidental or not have gone unnoticed.

 

Let's just hope album #5 sounds more original or that some other band becomes more popular and in the firing line.

Joe Satriani's Lawyer 'Informed Coldplay's Legal Council of Grammy Plans'

 

 

As we reported yesterday, HuffingtonPost.com and Fox News are both reporting that Coldplay might get served with legal papers in a law suite by Joe Satriani at this weekend's Grammy Awards. Today it is being reported that Coldplay's legal team were informed of those plans ahead of the awards ceremony this weekend.

 

Last year Satriani claimed that Coldplay's Grammy nominated hit "Viva La Vida" ripped off his song "If I Could Fly" (see the video after the break). Howard King, Satriani's Lawyer, has hired an army of process servers to make sure that the band gets served at the Grammys, he has made sure to hire enough camera men to get the whole thing on video, and he even had the decency to inform Coldplay's legal council of the plans.

 

Now this potential public humiliation might seem a bit like over kill but King had previously reported that they had tried to solve the matter privately. "We attempted to have a dialogue on this before we went public," King said. "We felt almost forced to file suit. As far as the 'coincidence,' ultimately that's for a jury to decide," he added.

 

Satriani, 52, wants a federal judge to order an accounting so he can determine how much money he may be owed, or else stop using the song. In response to Coldplay's statement, Satriani's lawyer, Howard E. King, said Coldplay's public reaction was dramatically different from how the guitarist's claims were treated before the lawsuit was filed.

 

King said it's common for musicians to be influenced by other works and incorporate it into their own, sometimes a little too closely. But he said that the reaction is usually different when the similarities are pointed out. "It doesn't mean you don't owe something to the original composer," he said.

 

Coldplay is one of the world's top-selling pop acts, and their latest CD, "Viva La Vida," has sold nearly 2 million copies in the United States alone. It was nominated last week for seven Grammys, including album of the year and record of the year for the title track.

 

Coldplay had recently fired back against the accusations regarding Viva La Vida. In a statement released on Coldplay.com, the band responded to a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by guitarist Joe Satriani last week in federal court in Los Angeles. That lawsuit says the Grammy-nominated song contains "substantial, original portions" of his 2004 song, "If I Could Fly."

 

"With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations," read the statement. "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song 'Viva La Vida.' We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours."

Yes and they are all master composers with extensive knowledge of chord progressions and music theory. :rolleyes: That's why I am shocked that when VLV was #1 around the world....JUNE!!!!....they weren't all flocking on here to point out that sameness to all of us. They must have too busy, teaching at Harvard or someplace fancy like that.

Now I am envisaging Satriani standing outside the grammys entrance with an absolute ENTOURAGE of master composers and lawyers. What a scary thought.

I just don't get how Satriani doesn't realize how bad this publicity stunt makes him look... the whole serving at the Grammy's with cameras etc is more Paris Hilton than professional musician.

 

It's just sad that he feels he has to stoop so low to get himself in the papers. And filming it is just pathetic - it isn't going to help him in court so it is pointless, other than to try to get more cash and publicity from releasing it to the media. Sad and unprofessional.
