First case of swine flu confirmed in Bavaria

The first case of swine flu has been confirmed in the German state of Bavaria, officials said on Wednesday.

Several cases had been suspected earlier in theweek, and one of those was determined to be swine flu by experts from Berlin’s Robert Koch Institute, a spokesperson for the Bavarian Health Ministry said in Munich.

The patient is from the nearby city of Regensburg.

There are two other cases being investigated in Bavaria, meanwhile health officials plan to meet a plane from Cancun in Munich on Wednesday and examine the passengers.

Other people are under observation in Hamburg and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A diagnosis for a woman suspected of having the virus in Hamburg is expected by midday. The patient was in Mexico – where the virus broke out – before returning to Germany and getting ill.

We were both right. The first one I heard about was in Hamburg, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.

yes, i think so, but they're not sure if he has it, yet. i'll go to hamburg tomorrow :uhoh:

but actually, my mum caught the norovirus two weeks ago, and although we were in the same house for a few days, i'm still fine. so now i think my immune system is not as crappy as i thought ;)

gotta go to uni now, bye ~

Julie, Carla don't worry as long as you keep the necesary precautions i'm sure it'll be fine :nice:

You better stay away from school young lady :whip:

Stay home and chat with us :p

Thanks Rudy

I don't know about that 1918 pandemic, but the fact that at least in Mexico it's been afecting young adults it's because last year an influenza vaccine was given to older adults and children, leaving the young adults vaccine-free....

As I understand it younger adults have a stronger immune system and can over react to the Flu and this is what can cause death rather than the virus itself.

lastest news here:

4 confirmed cases (3 in the region next to my region :stunned: , and from a same flight).

there are 59 possible cases in the whole country.

hospitals are getting ready for more cases.

90 possible cases in Australia, 23 in my state. None confirmed.

okay well I was getting a fever last night but I feel excellent today so it's kinda pointless to go to the doctor today. I don't have a stuffy nose or a sore throat anymore..

This is scary. :\

No he is from Mexico! He travled to US, he was for flu treathment in US.

I know. That's what I'm saying. He died in a Houston hospital, so it's a US casualty. :P I know that he was a Mexican boy. I read the article.

Fine.. I'll go to the doctor tomorrow. I don't think I have it though. I just have like a stuffy nose and a sore throat but I think that was from me yelling and singing out loud. I don't have a fever or cough or nausea or anything like that. heh.. I guess it's better to be sure.

Please do!!! let us know what they say:)

L5: WHO raises pandemic alert level

_45717560_007246339-1.jpg

The UN's World Health Organization has raised the alert over the spread of swine flu to level five - one short of a full-blown pandemic.

A phase five alert means human-to-human transmission in at least two countries. The move comes after a 23-month-old Mexican child died in Texas - the first death from swine flu outside Mexico, where the outbreak originated.

In Spain, officials confirmed the first case of swine flu in a person who has not travelled to Mexico. Announcing the increased alert level, WHO Director General Margaret Chan urged all countries to activate their pandemic plans - including heightened surveillance and infection control measures.

She said action should be undertaken with "increased urgency".

that case is the boyfriend of a girl who travelled to Mexico recently, and she got the flu i think.

Oh no sounds dire!

Sounds more than fucking dire.

I'm quite worried about all this. Last thing I fucking need!

Here's the local story on the toddler that died.

So far my hospital hasn't started screening people on admission for the disease. Right now we only screen for MRSA and acentobacter at admission to my unit.

This, like any flu, is most dangerous to the very young, the very old and anyone that has a suppressed immune system. You should wash your hands frequenly and avoid crowds if possible. I was watching some of the footie from Mexico and they played the matches to empty stadiums, supports were banned to prevent spreading the disease.

my univeristy sent out emails telling us all the precautionary measures today...nothing new, of course, just telling people to wash their hands all the time. thank god i'm a germaphobe and do that all the time anyway :P

i think we're going to start seeing more cells of infection and more mask-wearing in the US quite soon :uhoh:.

PANDEMIC THREAT LEVEL 5!!!

Yeah thank goodness I am already a germohpobe, although I was watching CNN while at the gym and started feeling kind of scared... Now my hands are like raw from using so much hand sanitizer...

So it turns out that I only have a throat infection.....better than swine!! I did get a fever last night....heh :sick2:

here there are already 10 cases confirmed :worried: (the indirect one is one of those).

and another 70 suspicious cases i think.

Still nothing here. :inquisitive::stunned:

the state i'm currently in (pennsylvania, for uni) has it's first suspected case . i guess it's only a matter of time until connecticut, my home state, gets it too, which i'm going back to in a week.

my mom also just told me she heard on the news that the virus is so small that it passes through the material of face masks. has anyone else heard that?

I am glad you went, did they give you any antibiotics?

They are very alert, every 'maybe' or 'could be' case will be put in quarantain immediatly I supose.

In Europe is could be a 'less heavy' sort of the virus(I hear that here and there.. hmm).

But the deaths where more in the begin, but last days it's getting lower and lower.

So maybe it's already giving up?

There are on scheme with the flu, if they keep fighting the virus this way, it will hopefully solve it fast!

Well it's not Mexico where I live in, but I hear from people living there, that the streets are very empty and freaky, true? That's very freaking...

To all people in Mexico and USA(and other places with the virus) alot of good luck, and let's hope i'll been solved soon! :o
