Swine Flu - latest news/discussion

Featured Replies

the state i'm currently in (pennsylvania, for uni) has it's first suspected case . i guess it's only a matter of time until connecticut, my home state, gets it too, which i'm going back to in a week.

my mom also just told me she heard on the news that the virus is so small that it passes through the material of face masks. has anyone else heard that?

I did hear this concerning face masks, on CNN- they said the normal surgical masks bought in drugstores are useless, that instead you need a mask that is "superfine"....I am told maybe ask your pharmacist which ones are best. Maybe like proffesional painters wear to reduce the fumes?

Angie , would you know?

N95 is the safest mask I have used at the hospital. We only use it for TB at the hospital. You need to be custom fit for it. They come in 3 sizes.

This stuff is always blown ridiculously out of proportion. tens of thousands of people die from the regular flu every year, yet a hundred people die from this and its already been declared a pandemic...

I am glad you went, did they give you any antibiotics?

yes, they did. I already slept for 5 hours! I forced myself to get up. I actually wasn't going to go but then I felt guilty after I had the fever last night...just what if? all my family and friends and everybody that I know just because I did not wanted to go..

i think if you would read what official sources say, you'd see that the reasons for being more concerned about this are well-founded and real. be sensitive; there are people here in the thick of this.

Until 250,000 people die from this I'm not going to get concerned...250,000 to 500,000 people die each year from the regular seasonal flu and all signs so far point that this flu is very mild. I read the death rate for it is at around 2% so far, hardly cause for concern.

Every year there is some major disaster waiting to happen, SARS, Bird Flu, 2012. There is no containing this, but from what we've seen so far its mild, many other common illnesses have higher death rates.

You're more in danger each day driving to work or school then you will ever be from this "new" flu that seems to be quite mild. You're more in danger to die from the regular seasonal flu then this.

*Most the kids in New York at the first school that caught this are making a quick recovery....

^ This. And it seems I have another cold, huzzah.

I propose a new tax to deal with this swine flu!

I find it ridiculous to declare it a pandemic too, but what they don't want is to spread the virus to precisely don't have a pandemic; the problem is all the misinformation and all the pretentious people and reporters around... Still I think the virus has to be very strong... the government would not have cancelled all those activities in full crisis, unless it was something important

OMg, that's what I'm saying... I can see why ppl are concerned, but let's not make a huge deal out of it... there's been a lot of crazy viruses like the bird one, they said it was gonna cause helter skelter and it wasn't as bad... Just chillax people!

I agree, Obama bribed the WHO and the international community in general and said: "oh yeah let's surround hype over a simple flu to squeeze american citizens' wallets so we can all buy a house on the french riviera"

He simply is making use of a natural situation like they all do. 911 was not an inside job but it was exactly what the government needed to do away with the constitution and start unjust wars.

Remember were all going to die by terrorist not the swine flu!

oh yeah... mmm I think we will need to call Jack Bauer... but 911 was another thing, you do something, blame someone else, accuse him, punish him and steal his valuable stuff (in this case oil)

Why not seize upon a natural disaster? Its like a gift to these politicians, more power more money. This one scares people more, thus even more money and power....

Politicians generally benefit from interesting narratives in the news because it increases a sense of community (read: collectivism) among their subjects.

Think about events like white women being kidnapped, kids getting their dads' guns, hurricanes destroying families' homes, troops returning from war with illness, etc.

The more they can generate a sense of "we" among many individuals with disparate interests, goals, fears, hopes, loves, etc. the more they can make us hate one another for the purposes of their campaigns.

Some dweeb-heads are even suggesting there should be a massive pig cull!:dozey:

Yah I think I read they were doing that in Egypt and the farmers there are rioting over it.

When the foot is infected, they will cut off the leg.

Thanks for this^^:)

And where does the general public get these?

I don't mean to be insensitive. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone battling through it, I just object to the unecessary widespread paranoia and panic induced by media and government. Like with E. Coli and the bird flu. But by no means am I dismissing the horrible things people are going through because of it.

cant we just keep this thread as one full of updates, and sincere concern?

keep the politiks out of it, sheesh!

"they" forecast a surge this autumn- any one of us here could contract this-

good luck to us all, no matter which looming virus there is lurking.
