Indirectly she does, as she implies that the showing of flesh is "provocative".:smug:

Well if Islamic fundamentalists get their way, you won't see anything.

Mark, are you ASEXUAL or something??? The showing of forearm skin or some such is NOT provocative, all I beleive she is saying is that if you advertise flesh near sex organs you're going to get a reaction. It's biological. Have you never seen a girl in a bikini before??

The Muslim rule about burqas is RIDICULOUS but if you beleive in FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION you would agree that you should be able to wear WHATEVER you wish. Trying to control the wearing of burqas is as bad as trying to control the wearing of anything. You should REALLY try to control the morons out there who BEAT women if they aren't wearing burqas -- you shouldn't just tell them to wear them.

It is a comfortable garment.[/color]

I saw a woman in the subway that wore one with a grill in front of her eyes... I wouldn't say it look 'confortable'... Look like in prison in her own clothes...

To me this outfit is the manifestation of centuries of men's fear of loosing their 'power' over women and their idea of virility.... It's middle-age machismo to me. (I don't want to offend anyone, but I don't see how the way you dress can affect your spiritual beliefs...).

And one law won't change (sadly) mentalities forged after centuries of masculin domination...

As noonsun said:

It's like putting a band-aid on a bleeding carotid or something.

Agreed....

I just hope that one day mentalities will change...

And frankly, I don't think this 'law' will pass...Sarkozy knows he will make a looot of ennemies (in and out the country) if he sticks with it...He's just trying to make speak of himself as always.. :dozey:

Well said. I can't believe how any right-thinking female could condone this.

;)

At least the Iranian people appear to be rising up against fundamentalism.;)

My name is Tracylynn.

Actually, I didn't think I contradict myself.

I said that because another poster asked why women wore those and I explained the reason (beliefs) as to the reason why they wore them. I didn't say that women had to wear them because that was the f**king case. But it's human nature to get turned on by human flesh. But the amount that someone gets turned on depends on them, the person.

The point I am making is that you can not force people to wear something that you feel that makes them submissive. If you do that then you're just like the societies that do that. You're no better than they are.

I am just a person who tries to learn and understand where others are coming from, and I think my work (interviews) with Muslim women helped me gain a better insight into their views/beliefs to many of these things but I am no expert.

I like how people are complaining about the Islamic Fundamentalist but forget about the Christian Fundamentalist who are just like them.

I'm absolutely against burqas at school ! I mean... cross are banned at school, I don't see why burqas should be allowed !

I'm totally against burqas but I'm not saying we should totally ban them !

And we just can't respect all religious beliefs and customs, even if they are strong... as I already said, from what you're saying it's just like you're for excision ! They say they agree, but I agree with Mark on this point, their religion brainwashed them... Anyway you can say what you want I'm atheistic ;)

Agree with you Aurelie, and yes we all know Sarkozy's goal :dozey:

So why is it banned in certain Islamic countries, then?? It's pathetic.;)

Have you ever seen women get assaulted on the beach because they're wearing one?? I very much doubt it.;)

Then try telling the Islamic fundamentalists that.;)

Dude, head coverings are banned at my school.... UNLESS you are Muslim. What the ell?

Religion brainwashes everyone. You don't need to be a freaky rocket scientist to know that. It's not just Islam. It's Christianity, Judais, Hinduism, and so on. Geez!!

Mark, you're comparing showing skin leads to rape and that is not the point. It's the reaction, the desire, the longing, the look, and so on that they believe in. They believe (some do) that showing of skin leads to temptation which can come in many forms and it does not have to be sexual.

Have you ever seen women get assaulted on the beach because they're wearing one?? I very much doubt it.;)

Very good point Mark, I'm proud of you :smug:

That's pure masochism !

Dude, head coverings are banned at my school.... UNLESS you are Muslim. What the ell?

 That is really weird...

Come on Tracy you have to admit that Islamic religion is different ! I know they are extremists in all religions, but this one is really special...

You know what some boys say in Islamic countries ??? They say that if the girls show even the tiniest part of skin, they deserve to be raped !!! What does it mean for you ?

So why is it banned in certain Islamic countries, then?? It's pathetic.;)

......I said basically exactly the same thing in the rest of the statement.

Have you ever seen women get assaulted on the beach because they're wearing one?? I very much doubt it.;)

...Way to deflect. I'm just saying skin can be provocative. Getting assaulted on beaches has nothing to do with the subject of this thread.

Then try telling the Islamic fundamentalists that.;)

1) Stop winking at me.

2) You aren't being on topic or really adressing what I'm saying at all.

3) Are you saying that because Muslims might say women need to wear burqas, it is a-OK for us to tell women that they are no longer allowed to wear burqas? Wow. Way to stay on the moral high-ground there, Mark.

ONCE MORE, what needs to be done is people need to stop trying to control ANYBODY's wearing of ANY article of clothing, or even lack thereof. The world would be a marginally happier and better place if that happened.

Let's ban all clothes for hot people.

Amendment 1: They're allowed to wear clothes in wintertime.

Amendment 2: Hotness will be determined by the visitors of HotOrNot.com Those over 8/10 constitute "hot".

Very good point Mark, I'm proud of you :smug:

That's pure masochism !

Wow!! Islam is a "different" "special" religion? All religions are different but Islam has many connections to Judaism and Christianity. Do you know the religion well? So well that we need to fear it?

Oh, you have never heard people, especially women, in our society say the same thing about women being raped? There are people, especially women, that say that when a woman dresses a certain way that she deserves to get raped? What does that mean to you? That it's ok because it's a different situation? Puhlease!!!

You want to know what it means to me? It means that there are a lot of uneducated people in this world and not just in the Muslim world.

I know there are connections between all religions, but please you see like I do how some Muslims are totally brainswashed by their religions, more than Christians, and I absolutely hate the way they treat women !

Sure, there are stupid women too, but don't even compare a plunging neckline/mini-skirt with seeing a lil part of skin or even hair ! And anyway this NEVER can be an reason to rape a woman !

Haha are you talking of me ? Well I do think I'm not narrow-minded, I'm very tolerant about tolerable things you see

Religion is stupid in general, but I agree that you shouldn't "ban" anything. It's not like they're hurting other people by wearing the burkas (because I doubt they're all that good-looking to begin with... they're probably giving themselves too much credit!).

Anyway, as Ron White says so eloquently, "You can't fix stupid."

Have you ever seen women get assaulted on the beach because they're wearing one?? I very much doubt it.;)

You're an idiot Mark, it has happened before. They may not get raped but they still can get what now counts as sexual harassment.

Well said. I can't believe how any right-thinking female could condone this.

I don't condone the wearing of burkhas, but if they want to wear them, just let them wear them, if they don't want to, they don't have to. You shouldn't force the women NOT to wear them, that's just as bad as forcing them TO wear them and is outright contradictory to your point.

Whispers to Mark: Mark, careful with your assertion that men are rational and ethical. Remember that women, being the weaker sex, rely on their perceived sexual power over men to inspire self-esteem.

Yells: Why yes, Cobalt! When I see a girl's ankle I just can't control myself! Thank goodness for the police to make me think twice before I sexually harass women!
