February 21, 201016 yr Bode Miller wins gold in super combined American comes back from seventh place after downhill portion By DALE ROBERTSON Feb. 21, 2010, 3:16PM 1 2 OLIVIER MORIN AFP/Getty Images Bode Miller came back from seventh place with a strong performance in the slalom portion. WHISTLER, British Columbia – Bode Miller’s run to redemption is complete. Miller won the gold medal in the Olympics super combined today to secure his place as the greatest American skier ever. In seventh place after the downhill portion of the combined, Miller produced a nearly perfect slalom run while all of his chief rivals, including the downhill leader Aksel Lund Svindal, fell by the wayside. When Svindal was disqualified for missing a slalom gate, Miller became a virtual lock to prevail. The 34-year-old Miller, who had actually retired last year before deciding to give skiing one final go, now has a medal of each color on Whistler Mountain. He was second in the super-G and third in the downhill. His five Olympic medals total, counting the two silvers he won in Salt Lake City in 2002, are two more than any other American Alpine skier has collected. Also, no American skier, male or female, had ever won more than two in a single Olympiad. Trailing Svindal by .76 seconds after the downhill, Miller wound up defeating Croatia’s Ivica Kostelic by a third of a second for the championship. Silvan Zurbriggen of Switzerland, .40 behind, took the bronze.
