It's mostly because of albums and songs sales tracking purposes. Each country has a different system.

There's a chance I'll get it on Oct 17th. There's a small music store here that brings the releases early :awesome:

if it leaks more than a week before release then i would listen to it but since australia apparently gets it on the 21st, i think i could wait 2 days :) The first listen is going to be in order and all in one go, how the album was designed to be listened to :)

There were 2 albums this year that were released in other countries first which me, and other fans, were convinced would leak on that day and they didn't leak for days afterwards!!

I am going to wait. Considering MX will be my first release-day Coldplay release, I plan on saving it for just that.

Someone with industry connections will leak it beforehand. Usually "friends" of those who get advance copies.

I wouldn't be so sure. All pre-release copies of MX (including the band member's) are encrypted with unique codes, so if it were to leak, EMI would be able to track down exactly who it was who leaked it and when. They would then presumably face legal troubles because it is unlawful to leak the album before release. I can't see why anyone would risk that and lose their career over leaking an album.
