That actually sounds like more of a defect in the file than anything else. :uhoh:

I've alredy heard it like 3 times, but it's so long I think I'll nedd a couple more listens to review it. I'm really enjoying it :)

I wish I had something to review :P

if anyone's short of a mixtape I can make one because I kinda missed the deadline for signing up.

Finally! Sorry mixtape maker; I didn't realise this week was going to be so much chaos. (I should've figured with 4 gigs, an interview, 3 reviews and actual working/studying )

Just a heads up, two of the tracks didn't have their info deleted properly/the file name was still the song name... Ironically it was the two tracks I recognised anyway. I really liked how you named all the tracks and gave it an album name, twas a really nice touch.

1) Starts straight off with a really nice track that has tonnes of awesome bass guitaring and a steady drum beat which I really approve of. Then the electric guitar comes across the top in it's like warble and man it's good. And I love the vocalist too. When the chorus kicks in I'm blatantly rocking out in my chair. I love this so much! Who is it?!

2) Starts with another nice male vocalist from the start with this really nice keyboard part in the background which reminds me of Palma Violets a little. And then the guitar kicks in and it starts getting louder and lots of rolling on 'ohhh's' in the background over the chorus. I qite like it though, although I could do with more of the louder parts because that's more my street.

3) I know this... It's F.U.N- 'Some Nights'. I keep meaning to listen to their album and I just haven't got around to it. I think I probably should because judging from this I wouldn't mind it.

4) This starts straight away with a 'ayay ayoh' for like a significantly long time and lots of hand clapping. I quite like it. It's really quite dreamy and pleasant to listen to. It's got everything I like on a track, guitars, drums, synths... And there's a contrast between the lead male vocalist who has this quite high voice and the other male vocalists that have quite deep voices. I'm totally 'ayay'ing' along with it by the end. Also: massively appropriate is that this has been entitled 'Sail On'.

5) Whoa, that's a weird instrument... Sounds slightly oriental? It's some sort of strings though I can tell. There's also a bass guitar in there somewhere and a piano. It's a really interesting combination. Oh and there's strings on it too. Literally so much going on. I'm not sure I love it though, but I certainly don't object to it. I probably would have it on whilst doing work.

6) It starts with what sounds like a heartbeat-- which is appropriate considering it has been named 'Reborn'. Oh I like and think I should know this voice-- hand clapping and tamborine at first and then drums and electronic beeps until the guitars kick in at a minute. Oh I really like this, right up my street. Especially the fact that it goes from the 'ooohhh' emotive bridge into a badass chorus. I could totally dance around to this. Love it!

7) This starts really daramtic, slightly classical and then you get the drums and the piano. The only problem I find, and I know it sounds awful, is that the singing is in another language (for the verses) and as much as the rest of the music is really catchy and interesting I get distracted by trying to work out what language he is singing. So I can't concentrate.

8) This sounds like The Fray-- is it? My interest wandered off their career at some point. I do really like it though. As I've said like a zillion times before now, piano, guitar, bass, drum... Basically everything I need to enjoy a song. And also nice vocals that fit my more sedate, relaxing days. Yeah, by the end of the track I'm about 90% sure it is The Fray (and if it's not, when did they get cloned?!)

9) Uh, I don't really like this song. It's far too airy fairy for me; it lacks the bite/substance I quite like having. And her voice grates on me a lot. Sorry.

10) Oh accoustic, I always forget how much I like it until it comes on my iPod. This is a really nice and pleasant track, her voice is really easy to listen to as well (and doesn't wind me up either).

11) I kind of can't judge this track as it's one that has the name... And also I knew it was Jonquil. I prefer the stuff off their latest album to this though :P

12) Oh both a male and female vocalist. I'm not sure I like the female vocalist too much on the verses because she's doing the whole breathy thing (if people get me?) but then I have immediately taken to the male vocalist so I just can't make my mind up. And I like the music itself with main basis being this piano driving the song with the additional strings and drum in the chorus. Ah it confuses me because I like it at points and then I don't. :explode:

13) It starts off a bit melodramatic and a little too boyband for me? Like I can kind of envision this being the sort of track that has a guy standing on a beach on the rain doing the whole air grab? It just strikes me as really bland. Not a fan.

14) Ahhh a piano intro with the real far off hints of guitar in there, I find it really appealing. The female vocalist is on this border between being really annoying and not... But it works really well in terms of this song. It's got this real weird aura around it. And I like that it is so atmospheric. This will probably end up on my end-of-the-evening chill list.

15) Aw, final track is called Home. Nice. It starts off by sounding like it belongs on The Sims. Oh and hey, it's again a different language so to me it actually does sound like The Sims Building Mode. I can't take it seriously. Sorry!

Overall a really nice mixtape which flowed really well and I enjoyed the vast majority of it. Very pleased considering my fussy music taste. Thank you!

Hi! I am your partner!!

OK, so I don't normally review my tapes this quickly, but I feel ready, so I'm just gonna go for it.

My tape has 12 tracks that don't quite get to 50 minutes, so it's more or less the size of your standard album. Fair enough. I also got some album art, which consisted of some rolling hills, a few trees, and a mountain range in the background. Having listened to the tape, I think the art reflects the overall tone of the tape quite well. Anyway, on to the music.

Just after sending my tape I read that you prefer long tape. I feek stupid with my short mixtape :(. The cover art is just there to make sure all original covers are gone. As I have no artistic skills I just put a picture I took last fall and which reflect a bit the mood of my tape.

1. It starts with congos and strumming guitar. There's a sweet bass line entrance. It has an '80s sort of vibe. ...Wait, what? It's in French. It's not a problem; I was just surprised by it. The song has clean, male vocals which I'm rather fond of. This song is über cute and makes me want to dance. I have no idea what the guy is saying, but I imagine it's something very sweet. I want to also make the assumption that my mixtape maker is a native French speaker. This is a great opener; I love it. Thanks! :nice:

This is my favorite song of the year and it's a first for a French song. It is about a laborious and unsuccessful attempt to approach a girl at a party.

I think that French music is poor (especially what is broadcast on radios and TV). We do have great bands/singers but not many and when I find something in French that I love I like to share.

2. Belle & Sebastian! I knew what this was right from the beginning. This is their song, "Seeing Other People." Very nice choice. :D

Glad you like it !

3. God, I know this song, but I don't know this song. This is a song I used to hear a lot on the oldies station my mom listened to when I was a child. Nostalgia hit me square in the face, and I enjoy it. I'm almost certain this is an Elton John song. At the very least, it's a song from around that time period by a person with a similar style. I only wish I could remember the title. GOSH, I hate it when I can't remember. :bigcry:

It's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by ... Elton John. You were right. I really love all the album. I like to listen to it at this time of year, when it's starting getting cold, with a hot chocolate, a good book and a warm blanket.

4. This starts with drums, guitar, and chordal piano, and it's slightly more rhythm-driven than the stuff I've heard so far. The vocals are female, and they seem sharply sweet. I can't really tell what she's singing, though. The instruments kinda drown her out. :/ I didn't like this song as much as the first three initially, but it's a grower, and I like it alright now.

I knew you will not be fond of this song because of the not so clear voice. But I didn't wanted to make you fall asleep with the previous songs. This is "Petition" and the band is called Tennis. I listened to them a lot this summer.

5. The song starts out with either a harpsichord or guitar. I can't tell. I'm leaning towards guitar because I think the sound is too strong and tinny to be harpsichord. Anyway, this is another French track. Despite the fact that I can't understand her, I like it because I can hear her (unlike the woman in the previous track), and she has sweet-sounding vocals, too. This song is quite harmonious. Is this what French folk rock typically sounds like? If so, I'd like to look into some more of this.

This was a trick :D It's not French. This is "Bylabym" and it is from a Polish band named "HEY". I love most of their songs and the singer voice is beautiful. This song is a quiet song but they have also a lot of rock songs. And if only we could have bands like that in France.

6. This sounds somewhat like a folk/jazz hybrid to me. The guitars and vocals are folkish, but the saxes and brass have that sort of big band vibe to it. (That's not even bringing the congos into consideration.) Based on the lyrics, I want to guess that the song is called "This Is How I Know" or something along those lines. This feels like an older track, but I want to say it's newer, just because it doesn't sound...old enough? I can't think of what I mean. Either way, I quite like the song. :D

As with the Elton John song I like to listen to this at that time of year. It's "This is how I know" from Rox Sexsmith. He is really great. And just for the anecdote (as we are on a Coldplay forum) he made a song with Chris Martin a few years ago :

7. This starts with strumming electric guitar, shortly followed with an addition of a bass drum beat. This is one of those songs you can easily get hooked into. I was dancing before it even got 1/4 of the way through. It stays instrumental for a bit, then adds these vocals that are somehow distorted. It reminded me of something Daft Punk would do. This song is very chill, and I can't help but feel happy when I listen to it. There's not a whole lot going on, but this is one of those songs that shows people that there doesn't have to be a lot going on in order for it to be enjoyable.

It is fall but I still love to listen to some "summer" songs. As you say, there is nothing much to tell about this song but I don't know, I feel great when I listen to it. And btw it's "I Wanna Go" by Summer Heart.

8. It begins with accordion, or something like it. It reminded me of Beirut. "With beady black eyes, the bluebird." Awww, poor bird. :( This song is one of those songs where you don't know how to feel because it has this mixture of melancholy and hope, both lyrically and musically. "All of your days will be blessed, so put on a smile and get dressed." See what I mean? It kinda alternates. Perhaps I'd understand more if I read the lyrics. I like the song, though. Don't worry about that. :nice:

Ed Harcourt - All Your Days Will Be Blessed.

I completly understand your feeling about that song. I feel the same. And that what make that song good in my opinion. Probably one of his most successful composition.

9. OMFG. "Chemo Limo" by Regina Spektor! I LOVE YOU. :dazzled: That is all.

10. This serves as a stark contrast to "Chemo Limo," which is great, because I don't think it'd have been right to put two songs like that next together. This song reminds me of Belle & Sebastian because it has that same sort of new old-skool vibe that Belle & Sebastian are known for. This also sounds slightly surf rock, in a way. I think it's the guitars. Anyway, it's refreshing. The vocals are, once again, sweet female vocals. "Slip, let it slip." This song is just too cute. :wacky:

A band I've listened a lot these last month and that I like a lot.

"Let it Slip" - The School

11. Ohhh, here we go. I was wondering if I was going to get another French track. This track is the closest thing to an electronic track on the tape. Not that it's particularly as such, but it has synths in certain places, and there's not a whole lot of that otherwise. I have to tell you, all this French music makes me want to try to teach myself French (again) so I can maybe understand what they're trying to say. They all sound so nice when they sing, but I feel like I'm not getting the full impact because I can't understand it. :bigcry: There's something slightly haunting about the spoken vocals that I like. Man, this French music is so cool.

"Grand Central" - Alizée. She had a big succes in France in the early 2000's with teenager pop songs (even if when you listen to the lyrics and watch the clips it's not that innocent). Now she just makes musics she want to do and I find it's really good.

12. More piano. YES. :awesome: And bells! How cute. "Oooh, ahhh, oooh, ahhh." Those bits sounds slightly gaspy, but I think that was the whole point. The vocals are in English, but I detect a foreign accent, so I'm guessing this is an English artist, rather than an American one. "Never stop living here 'til it eats the heart from your soul..." I like that bit lots. Actually, I like this song. I feel like I should thank you especially for this one. I've listened to several tapes where the tape overall is nice, but the closer is a buzzkill. It doesn't affect my opinion overall, but it can be a tad annoying. Thanks for picking a suitable closing track. :nice:

"Silent Sigh" - Badly Drawn Boy

This is from the soundtrack of "About a boy". I love the soundtrack and I love the movie too. Oh and he is English yes. I'm glad you like that last song.

Overall, you kept a similar vibe throughout the tape without putting too much of the same thing on it, therefore making it pleasantly cohesive. There's not a single track on here that I dislike. I really enjoy this mixtape you've made for me. Thank you so much, and I can't to figure out who you (and the artists) are!

ETA: Oh gosh, I'm the first to post a review. That has NEVER happened before. :surprised:

I was a bit worried because I tried to do something that you wouldn't dislike but didn't fit completely with what you usually like to listen if you know what I mean. And as I didn't had many time it I'm happy you like it. I'm also happy that you don't hate the foreing songs. I'm always curious to see how people can react to french music.

I'm glad I had to make your tape. You always describe your feelings and your opinions so well that it's a pleasure to read your review.

I wish I had answer you earlier. I'm sorry to have kept you waiting so long.

And here is the tracklist :

Je bois et puis je danse - Aline

Seeing Other People - Belle And Sebastian

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

Petition - Tennis

Bylabym - Hey

This is How I know - Ron Sexsmith

I wanna go - Summer Heart

All Of Your Days Will Be Blessed - Ed Harcourt

Chemo Limo - Regina Spektor

Let it slip - The School

Grand Central - Alizée

Silent Sigh - Badly Drawn Boy

Louise! :cheesy: You made my tape? That's grand. :D

A couple of reflective notes about the music, now that I know what it is.

1. Why is it that all the French people I've talked to say that French music is poor? That sounds like such a shame. That Aline song was definitely a favorite. I'm gonna look into that.

3. YES I WAS RIGHT. Thank goodness.

4. ...How the hell did I miss Tennis? I've put them on tapes before and everything. I feel like a fool. :disappointed:

5. WHAAAAA? Polish? They sure fooled me. I've never heard Polish music like that before. How neat. :wacky: I'll have to look more into this.

6. Yeah, I know about the Coldplay connection. I've just never bothered to listen to his other stuff, for some reason. Hm.

12. Wow, I've heard of Badly Drawn Boy, but I've never actually heard anything by them before. Thanks for fixing that.

Don't feel bad about your tape being a shorter one. It's always more about quality than quantity. I'd much rather have the one you made as is than a huge tape filled with stuff I hate. Thanks so much again for making this for me. It's a lovely tape.

Still waiting for my review :dozey:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

Still waiting for my review :dozey:

Me too. Let's try to be patient, though. Our people may very well be busy.

Me too. Let's try to be patient, though. Our people may very well be busy.

Okay :wacky:

But my mixtape receiver is currently online and reading this thread :mean:

if anyone's short of a mixtape I can make one because I kinda missed the deadline for signing up.

If the intended person doesn't acquire and you wish to participate, you can 'always' make me one. I'll review it and I'll make one for you as well.

Louise! :cheesy: You made my tape? That's grand. :D

HEY is the only Polish music I've listen to and I can't understand a word but I really think it is accesible music for anyone who want to discover foreing music. They also made songs in English (but I prefer the Polish one).

And you should definitely listen to Badly Drawn Boy!!!!

To my mixtape maker, I will post my review on saturday or maybe sunday :)

OKAY REVIEW TIME

This mixtape was separated in three sections, A, B, and C. I tried to find out why they were separated this way, and at first I thought it was because A was more ambient and the other parts were other genres, but there were ambient songs in the other parts so I am really sorry, mixtape maker, if I couldn't figure it out :/

A-01 Great starter, very calm and slow, yet it has some sense of beginning, like something is about to start. I'd listen to that at sunset and it would have this perfect feeling. A+.

A-02 This one is a little bit electronic with the vocals and the electronic percussions. Very calm as well, very ambient. Not bad.

A-03 This one I enjoyed a lot. Starts slow with a lovely piano and then more instruments join in. I don't have any other words but beautiful to describe this track, very joyful. The closing with the vocals is beautiful as well. I feel like I've heard this voice before, but I might be wrong.

A-04 Electronic sounds from the start, and then more instruments join in, I feel like it's a marimba? Nice tune, instrumental, I like.

A-05 Ahh one of my favourites of the tape. I love the voice and the soft guitars in the back. I've never heard. Reminds me a bit of The Shins, but much more subtle and calm.

A-06 Ahh this one has much more rhythm with distorted synths. Lovely female voice, I also feel like I have heard that voice before. American Soldiers comes up often in the lyrics, could that be the title? Very nice.

A-07 Back to a much calmer ambience. This is beautiful, I feel like I could listen to this alone on a beach and watch the waves and it would be very relaxing.

A-08 Lovely track with the female voice and the piano. And then the strings join in midway, it is absolutely breath taking. One of my favourites of the tape.

B-09 Ooo electronic ambient song. Many variations throughout the song, yet it follows the same uhmmmm theme (?) as the little bit at the beginning. Not my favourite but it isn't bad.

B-10 I can't figure out what efect there is on the vocals but it fits the song perfectly. I like it a lot. It's calm, nonchalant with the xylophone and the guitar.

B-11 Ooooh not an ambient song? Much more rock-ish with the electric guitars and the female voice. Unique on this tape, I like it a lot. Feels familiar. The chorus is great.

B-12 This tune starts with an organ bit and then other electronic sounds join in as well as the vocals. God I love it. It's awesome, possibly my favourite.

B-13 Another electronic ambient track with distorted synths. It is calm and repetitive, it isn't bad but not my favourite.

B-14 Very calm with piano and the strings, and electronic sounds added. Nice effect on the voice. It's good.

C-15 Ooo starts with vocals only, damn that woman's got quite the voice and the vocal abilities. And then she is joined by other female singers. It's interesting! Very nice!

C-16 Oooooo strings. What a joyful tune! It is absolutely beautiful, I would love to see it being performed by an orchestra. Wow.

C-17 There is a crowd chanting something at the beginning but I can't quite figure out what they are saying. Then the music starts and wow, it is lovely. The classical guitar fits so great with the vocals. Nice one.

C-18 Piano track with wood xylophones, I think? It's calm and relaxing. It doesn't stand out but it does announce the end of the tape efficiently.

C-19 This track is intersesting. There is a man talking about a place where he remembers being or going, a very peaceful place of his, set with a background of calm music, very peaceful. Nice closing track, partner.

Overall, I enjoyed the tape, it was fairly calm, relaxing and ambient, and even if I thought it was a little too calm at first, I thought it was a masterpiece after the third listen. Congratulations to you, partner. Favourites were track # A--03, A-04, A-05, A-06, A-8, B-11, B-12, C-16, C-17.

Okay so there is only one guy on this board that I know would make such a tape for I've had him as a mixtape maker two times before.

Chris, oh my god, is that you again??? What are the odds??

If I am wrong in my guessing, I am sorry, partner! But you should talk to the guy in the spoiler, you two would have a lot to talk about, music-wise. :P

OKAY REVIEW TIME

I tried to find out why they were separated this way, and at first I thought it was because A was more ambient and the other parts were other genres, but there were ambient songs in the other parts so I am really sorry, mixtape maker, if I couldn't figure it out :/

Pretty much, I just thought the whole thing was easier to swallow in 3 pieces. A is kind of it's own complete warm idea with similar song themes, while B is a much darker turn, and C is kind of a resolve.

A-01 Great starter, very calm and slow, yet it has some sense of beginning, like something is about to start. I'd listen to that at sunset and it would have this perfect feeling. A+.

I might as well get out the way now that I had half a mind to ask for a different partner after drawing you, but figured that would mean a lot of complications. I really really wanted to make a very different sounding tape and kind of failed (I always end up choosing the songs that have the most emotional pull for me). As you know better than anyone else, I'm obsessed with ambient textures, and if I didn't bore you with occasional slowness throughout, it would mean I wasn't trying. Glad you liked this one though. It's called 'When' by Sundrips.

A-02 This one is a little bit electronic with the vocals and the electronic percussions. Very calm as well, very ambient. Not bad.

"The Pull" by High Places.

A-03 This one I enjoyed a lot. Starts slow with a lovely piano and then more instruments join in. I don't have any other words but beautiful to describe this track, very joyful. The closing with the vocals is beautiful as well. I feel like I've heard this voice before, but I might be wrong.

I threw away a ton of my candidate songs, as I didn't want to repeat artists I sent you before (didn't complete succeed...). This is by Peter Broderick, you can probably guess the song name.

A-04 Electronic sounds from the start, and then more instruments join in, I feel like it's a marimba? Nice tune, instrumental, I like.

This is basically sampled and sped up piano and xylophone sounds. Glad you enjoyed it!

A-05 Ahh one of my favourites of the tape. I love the voice and the soft guitars in the back. I've never heard. Reminds me a bit of The Shins, but much more subtle and calm.

I thought there was a chance you've heard this one before, so... phew! It's 'Child' by Edward Sharpe and the magnetic zeros. I listened to a lot of these A tracks while driving to my job supervising teenage girls with a history of drug and mental problems at a camp/health facility. That's part of the reason I set them apart, as I read similar ideas into the lyrics at the time.

A-06 Ahh this one has much more rhythm with distorted synths. Lovely female voice, I also feel like I have heard that voice before. American Soldiers comes up often in the lyrics, could that be the title? Very nice.

Yeah, it's called 'America's Boy' by the british group 'Broadcast'. Some see it as politically charged, but Trish (the singer) instead described as a sort of weird, girlish celebration of the American military.

A-07 Back to a much calmer ambience. This is beautiful, I feel like I could listen to this alone on a beach and watch the waves and it would be very relaxing.

I've given you 'Stars of the Lid' before, but this is a side project by one of the 2 members for a soundtrack on a documentary about bees. Again, a selfish ambient choice. Glad it didn't bore you, it's called 'Girl Nap'.

A-08 Lovely track with the female voice and the piano. And then the strings join in midway, it is absolutely breath taking. One of my favourites of the tape.

So happy you liked it. This is Peter Broderick's sister, Heather. I highly recommend her album 'From the Ground'.

B-09 Ooo electronic ambient song. Many variations throughout the song, yet it follows the same uhmmmm theme (?) as the little bit at the beginning. Not my favourite but it isn't bad.

'Stolen Dog' by Burial.

B-10 I can't figure out what efect there is on the vocals but it fits the song perfectly. I like it a lot. It's calm, nonchalant with the xylophone and the guitar.

If you haven't heard of Sleep Party People, give them a google. They're an interesting Danish group, and for live shows they all wear creepy bunny masks.

B-11 Ooooh not an ambient song? Much more rock-ish with the electric guitars and the female voice. Unique on this tape, I like it a lot. Feels familiar. The chorus is great.

I left a few straight up rock songs off the mix to keep the flow intact, but I think this ones a nice change. 'Drive on' by La Sera.

B-12 This tune starts with an organ bit and then other electronic sounds join in as well as the vocals. God I love it. It's awesome, possibly my favourite.

Credit to Mike for alerting me to the existence of the latest Tamer Lives EP (Mind The Gap). This one's called ' Dead Can', and easily my favorite song that they've put out. Glad you like it!

B-13 Another electronic ambient track with distorted synths. It is calm and repetitive, it isn't bad but not my favourite.

Fair 'nuff. Kind of an interlude, really. I personally like the way it disintegrates near the end. It's 'Summer Girl' by ARP

B-14 Very calm with piano and the strings, and electronic sounds added. Nice effect on the voice. It's good.

'Understand' by The Boats

C-15 Ooo starts with vocals only, damn that woman's got quite the voice and the vocal abilities. And then she is joined by other female singers. It's interesting! Very nice!

That woman is a boy. And those other female singers are other young English boys in a choir :P. It's a piece composed by Benjamin Britten called 'Cuckoo!'. Its featured on the film 'Moonrise Kingdom'.

C-16 Oooooo strings. What a joyful tune! It is absolutely beautiful, I would love to see it being performed by an orchestra. Wow.

Forgive me for including Max Richter again, but maybe it doesn't count if he's rearranging Vivaldi.

C-17 There is a crowd chanting something at the beginning but I can't quite figure out what they are saying. Then the music starts and wow, it is lovely. The classical guitar fits so great with the vocals. Nice one.

Really loving this album atm. The song is 'Anna' by Taken By Trees, a project by the former front-woman of The Concretes.

C-18 Piano track with wood xylophones, I think? It's calm and relaxing. It doesn't stand out but it does announce the end of the tape efficiently.

Hauschka (real name: Volker Bertelmann) is known for arranged piano pieces where he sticks a bunch of clips and toys and junk inside the piano to make those weird sounds. This one's called 'Two Stones'.

C-19 This track is intersesting. There is a man talking about a place where he remembers being or going, a very peaceful place of his, set with a background of calm music, very peaceful. Nice closing track, partner.

For years I've wanted to use this in a mix, but I always found reasons to throw it out. '4 or 5 trees' by Rachel's.

Wow, thanks so much for the positive review. It means a lot.

Haha. As I said before, I was kind of afraid it would be unfair for you to get the same mofo for a 3rd time around. The odds were certainly long. I had hoped to make a tape that was less obviously me, haha, but I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed many of the tracks.

To my Mixtape maker:

I'm sorry my review is taking so long. I've listened to your tape and I will try to get a review up this weekend but I'm swamped with work right now (last 2 days if the quarter), so please be patient with me.:)

Sorry for the inconvenience....

Marie, how on Earth are you lucky enough to get Chris three times? That's amazing.

Mixtape Review

Okay, here we go: my first mixtape review:

I got a partner who managed to delete all the song-information and made it into an own iTunes album so listening to it was very convenient . It also had a cover, some kind of light-reflections. Great effort has gone into that, compliment on that! :)

Track 1:Great beginning :D. This song has a kind of comedic feeling to it, it sets you in a good mood. Starts of with a piano and a male voice which I like and has some (I think) deliberately overdone chorus things. A really "fun" song. But because he always sings "Some Nights" I always had to think of fun, which made it even more funnier because this song sounds absolutely not like them :D

Track 2: Animal Skins by Dry the River is of course an awesome song, cool coincidence since they are not that popular and I get someone who apparently likes them (they were even in another mix tape, it's Dry the River time :D ) :) I love the 7/8 bars which are thrown in, if you listen carefully you can make them out (drummer's habit :D).

Track 3: Here I have to start guessing because I don't get anything of what the singer sings (not even the language :D ). A bit of understated guitar (don't know why, but I think of these chords as french-sounding), a male voice and some quirky chorus synths make this a decent listen. Maybe I like it better if I know what this guy sings about.

Track 4: Waste by Foster the People! A great song, love that chorus with the bells and these intro sampler/whatever thing. They always get this mixture right of catchiness and creativeness,

Track 5: Seems to be older judging by the recording, my least favorite so far. Maybe I'm just to young, but this combination of music and melody in german would be what my grandparents listen too, can't really get into this one.

Track 6: That one makes up for everything, perfect placement ;) It is an upbeat rock song, love these fast danceable kind of songs. It sounds a bit like Two Door Cinema Club with a bit more edge and less of these dance influence and more straightforward rock. The intro guitar riff is really cool, so simple but so effective. I again don't get anything he says, will be really curious about finding out what all these songs I can only "hear" are about.

Track 7: upbeat song with driving drums and some fast acoustic guitar. Is only 1:43 minutes long, so not really notable. Goes by too fast to leave an impression, but I'm liking it more every time I hear it.

track 8: "Deepest Shame" from Plan B's "Ill Manors". As I love that record, I love this song. Dark, atmospheric, but a bit more relaxed than the other tracks on the record. Would deserve a Mercury.

Track 9: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds would be my guess. He's a great songwriter and singer and I really like his style of music. Brings a cool britpop-feel to the mixtape (any Oasis-fans correct me if this is not britpop :D )

Track 10: Some 80's drums, not to memorable chords and a bit cliche trumpet in the chorus turn this into a decent track. Not something I will remember, but I also won't skip this track on future listens.

Track 11: Interesting song, the singer has an interesting voice. Bit of a folky thing in here with an ukulele and accordion. Also adds a definitely more interesting brass section than nr.10.

I like it and it's also a nice contrast to the electric songs (not that I don't like them, it's just more diverse this way). At 5:43 the second longest track here, but its really worth the time.

Track 12: Catchy, but the kind of catchy I like :D Again in a different language which I like because I didn't really expect to be introduced into such new territory (regionally). Strong chorus, really enjoy this one. Need to get a track listing because I honestly will never figure out the artist otherwise :D

Track 13: I've got the really strange feeling of having heard this track before, but I can't really remember when. More synth-loaden than the tracks before, but not in a bad way. The only thing bothering me is the dominant synth riff which is repeated throughout the song: if you like, good but if you don't like it, well then you hear it every 20 seconds which makes it a bit harder to listen to. Would be put it in the middle of enjoyable and annoying.

Track 14: Bracing myself for nearly seven minutes, the longest track. First of all thanks for including that, I normally keep such long tracks to myself because I bore everyone else who isn't that into music but I find it really cool (and somewhat brave) to include it.

I am really getting used to this language whichever it is. Halfway through the song there are some spoken words and then some effect loaden things/synths/samples which then bubble along in the background. Perhaps my favorite track because its so weird (even with a piano solo at the end, combined with funky drum fills). And I just noticed that it seems to be a double bass being played in the song. Thanks for that one :)

Track 15: I love these combination of songs I like and know and songs I don't know (even if that was unintentional). I love Bon Iver, and if I am not mistaken this song is Hinnom, TX. Great record and fits really good in here.

Track 16: Some acoustic guitar fingerpicking, going a bit folky again. But I like mind men singing in harmonies (see nr.2) and therefore really like this song. A great ending to a great mix tape

So thank you to whoever made this mix tape, I really enjoyed and will enjoy listening to it in the future.

A great introduction to the coldplay mixtape exchange as this was my first time and a special thanks for including so many songs of your language (?) which is really interesting, just listening to music and judging it just by the sound and without lyrics.

Dry the River, Bon Iver, and Foster the People. Rudy would have a ball with that tape.

It really looks good. I'm excited to see who made yours.

(Actually, come to think of it, I have a pretty good guess.)

Haha. As I said before, I was kind of afraid it would be unfair for you to get the same mofo for a 3rd time around. The odds were certainly long. I had hoped to make a tape that was less obviously me, haha, but I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed many of the tracks.[/color]

Ahhh I knew it! I do recognize some artists you've used before, like Max Richter, but I don't mind one bit, it was fantastic! I'm sorry you had to make one for me again haha, but I sure was happy to get one from you! And I have no idea how I didn't recognize Other Lives, sigh.

Thanks again, beautiful

I have no idea, but I am not complaining

omfg I had the same thought about Rudy.
