But those don't count as real instruments...right...?

Guy's presence is pretty strong though (the bassline), and Will and Jonny were also 100% involved (the beats and some of the synths)

The song was made on the computer, it was built around jon hopkins song amphora.

Anyways, in that short one page experiment this is what I learned/confirmed:

-we can't even agree on what song is pop and what isn't let alone if the next album if gonna be pop so chillax.

-I personally dont mind the songs that were deemed poppy in the previous page. In fact, I prefer them to certain rockier songs in Coldplay's repertoire. Which leads me to this statement:

Pop is not bad if done well. Conversely, rock is shit if done poorly. It's all about how well you can pull it off. I tend to think Coldplay have done a good job at whatever genre they happen hit upon in a song they're doing. But again, I don't even think Coldplay is out to make music of a certain genre.

This 100%

What people on this board still seem not to understand is that rockier =/= better. Think about Nickelback.

Oh fuck yes, that is the best argument i've heard yet.

Of course rockier is better.

Let's dumb this down.

Nickelback is better than Michael Jackson because "rockier is better".

True or false?

Rockier is better in terms of the music coldplay makes. gs and mx are not as good as their first 4 albums.

If you're trying to suggest poprock, thats already a thing

Implying a song like The Hardest Part is better than Midnight or Magic. Also, even Viva wasn't that rocky (except Chinese Sleep Chant, Violet Hill and DAAHF)

It is better in my own opinion.

To be fair, on the pop side of things we have Nikki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, etc. :P

Not that I'm disagreeing, but if I have to choose between bad pop and bad rock, I'm gonna go with rock just because that's my personal preference (and why I got into Coldplay in the first place)

Chris said: "We're trying to make something colourful and uplifting and we're just having quite a good time making it because we've spent so long not making that kind of thing," he added.

Martin responded to a question about making a follow-up record that was louder and with more "bombast" by saying: "Not bombast, I think it would be fun to shuffle your feet a bit."

So judging by those lines, and adding the inspiration by A-HA and maybe Stargate as producers, I think that Hurts Like Heaven could be something close to A Head Full Of Dreams. I personally would be quite happy if it sounds at least like that song.

As long as Chris doesn't start twerking on stage like Minaj or wearing tops that enhance his boobs like Katy Perry, we'll be fine.

I would love if the new album had the same style as don't let it break your heart. That's a great song, it's my favorite from mx. [emoji173]️

Hurts like heaven is the perfect combination of rock and pop. The guitar, bass and drums mixed with the xylophones is very well worked. If they are going pop, then HLH would be the perfect theme for the album.

Hurts Like Heaven is so good. Especially live! It really is a nice com combination of rock and pop.

HLH in my opinion is one of Coldplay's great masterpieces. This is a good point. It has a sound entirely unique to itself and has such lush, textured production that the song is super deep and artistic, not to mention the perfect mix of rock instrumentation with electronic "xylobrytes."

I don't see them making a track in that vein again though. If they do, I would guess it would be on the dancier side of things with more of a groove rather than a riff. This whole pop discussion does make me realize that we shouldn't worry too much. They have done really great unique pop in the past. Even Paradise stands out as a superior pop song. My concern remains however, what if AHFOD has a great instrumental base to it, with great tracks at the core, but gets watered out and overproduced by the likes of Stargate or another EDM star? BRING BACK ENO!
