LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"

Recommended Posts

My main point is...this album is the sound of a band trying to remain relevant. Not just having fun in the studio.

I love Coldplay, I do. But everything from the sounds used..to the melodies. Amsterdam was an original melody- Everglow is not. You can both call them piano rock...but ...just sayin..

Maybe another way of putting it... if Army of One was exactly the same...maybe a little less guitar, but had Katy Perry's voice... I would believe it was a Katy Perry song.

I wouldn't believe that about Amsterdam, for instance..

I dont think Katy Perry can pull off Army of One.

But thats exactly what they have had, the most fun in the studio ever during AHFOD (and the fewest squabbles apparently according to Will!) :)

Army of One and Fun... they both have such simply made melodies and use that same pop structure/formula that I could see damn near any pop artist coming out with these songs. And like I mentioned before...I could see another artist like Sarah Mclaughlan doing Everglow...could definitely see U2 doing AHFOD ..and could definitely see a rap artist doing Xmarks The Spot. Though, I know it makes Chris happy to let the other band members shine...so in that respect I get why they let Johnny conjure up the song with the riff for AOAL rather than have Chris start off every song... but it does feel this has been the very first album ...ever of Coldplay's ...where I felt the originality took a hit.

Ghost Stories..I had never heard anything like it. I do agree that yes, Hymn for the Weekend...is up there in the list of original Coldplay songs since it has a lot of different styles and I'm not hearing anyone play a piano riff like that...currently in modern pop radio. And Amazing Day which is...definitely original. I would basically break it down like- Original- HFTW, AOAL, Kaleidoscope, Birds Unoriginal- Everglow, Fun, X Marks the Spot, Army of One, AHFOD, Up and Up

Even Ghost Stories had ....the big questionable (which I still think is original due to the melody still being so Coldplay) A Sky Full Of Stars

Every other song....I couldn't hear another band doing. Look at Midnight- I hadn't even heard anything like that before from any band. You could argue similiar vox effects in singers like Imogen Heap...but still really different.

The formulas followed on a few of the songs were not from Chris certainly...and maybe not even the others.

But of course the song AHFOD is dancepop as well :)

HOW is AHFOD dance-pop? It fits into U2's discography like a glove. Just because there's a lot of bass and energy that doesn't make it a dance song. This is not ASFOS. The only song more alt-rock-sounding on the album than it is Birds. At least to me.

Army of One is waaaaay too sophisticated for Katy Perry to ever produce, record, and sing to.

I mean, I guess Army of One is a pop-ballad, but Katy Perry writes lyrics like: "you'll hear me, ro-oh-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-or" and "sun-kissed skin, so hot, will melt your popsicles, whoah ohah oh." ... not "my Army of One, will fight for you," and "say my heart is my gun."

In a somewhat related note, people need to stop bitching and complaining about how Coldplay is selling-out with their new pop influences. Their songs have taken a 180 degree turn since Parachutes, but the music they produce is still high quality and has a lot of work put into it. It's not like Coldplay is writing the next "Shake it Off," "Talk Dirty to Me," or "Hotline Bling."

Midnight is actually based on a song by Jon Hopkins

I agree! I am totally fine with people saying this or that album of theirs is not good or not to their liking, but its undeniable that they are true sincere artists who put 150% in all they do and it would be unfair to say otherwise imo.

Btw I find "Shake it off" infectious *LOL* I had to get some shit off me back when that song came out and it just was cathartic for me to dance to hehe :)

Not that it's a bad song or anything.... but if we're gonna talk about an artist that has completely abandoned their original genre of music.... it's Taylor Swift, not Coldplay.

Hehe Yes her new pop sound has not gone down well with some country fans. Sometimes I wonder if its not a case of being a bit too snobbish about pop? I mean if a pop artist goes into country or jazz its deemed an artistic move, if its from country or rock to pop then its a sell out LOL Pop music tends to be yes the most popular obviously but I do believe it has artistic value in itself when done well, like all and on par with other genres.

I respectfully disagree. The last thing this band cares about anymore is if people like it or not. If they did, we would something like Mylo Xyloto again. As much as I love that album, its biggest problem fell in the fact they were trying to keep their classic Coldplay sound while merging it with louder, more anthemic music. It didn't work as well as most of us wanted to. With A Head Full of Dreams, I feel like this is the most creative and free they have been since Viva. It's easily in my top three albums. There isn't one song I want to skip or go past, and I can't say the same about Mylo or Ghost Stories.

Ah ! I love your analysis and it had never occurred to me to look at MX in that way but it makes perfect sense. They were quite free on MX but not free enough to go "all the way" perhaps? Which they now did with AHFOD. Interestingly they have managed to keep the classic Coldplay (we hear it in Birds, army of one, everglow) but it now blends with the rest of the album as it should. Guess thats also what Chris means when he says this album is where they were aiming for all along.

*LOL* You are so witty :) I am enjoying your posts :D

And btw I love that song as much as I dislike the video hehe

Thanks ! Strange, I felt the same about Wrecking Ball ! I first heard it on the radio (not knowing by whom it was, so completely unbiased) and thought "Wow, for a pop song it has a good melody". Then I saw the video....

I felt similarly when I heard "Good for you" by Selena Gomez. (Only Chris cud have made me check out a song by Selena, but im glad I did haha). The song I love, but the video looks like a soft porn flick if you mute the music *LOL* I guess it shows the disconnect between what are clearly some talented songwriters behind some of these songs and the shamelessly commerciality of the videos. No need to draw the "sexy video" card when there is a solid song there....

Exactly! Ages ago, I remember making a prediction that AHFOD would be what Mylo should have and could have been. So far, I feel that's true. Aside from much more clean production, this album feels like a true successor to Viva. I don't give a shit if this album got only negative critical reviews. This album is fucking good.

exactly. this is easily the LEAST cp has ever cared about "fitting in."

Guest howyousawtheworld

How I'd love a Coldplay album produced/collaborated with Jon Hopkins. He is the new Brian Eno. Unbelievably talented musician (trained pianist at the highest level as well) who would give Coldplay a much needed critical rejuvenation.
