I think we'll know what's going to happen by Monday/Tuesday (UK chart wise). This is a good forum to keep an eye on (Updates are normally posted between 10am-3pm UK time) : http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=184620&st=0&start=0 Latest sales / mid-week updates are posted on there before everywhere else.

Someone is saying on the Coldplay prediction thread that they've made 100k sales within the first day. Coldplay will go over 200k easily, maybe even close to 300k. They're all underestimating them a lot. I think it's because they treat Ghost Stories as just another album by them (not knowing that it wasn't the next big album after MX), so they're inclined to think sales are only going to go down from there.

Apparently, they're on course for only 150k sales in the U.S. which would be considered a flop for Coldplay.

Thats a good point. Lets hope they sell closer to what MX did or similar. But they are also bound to be affected a bit by the "Adele hurricane" with her release just two weeks prior :/

^ No big surprises on the US sales--apparently they don't have crap for advertising over here. Went to my local Walmart to pick up a copy and they didn't have a single one, just about six rows of shelves devoted to 25 *rolls eyes*

Now maybe this means nothing as I am not sure how Barnes and Noble are up to date when it comes to music. After all they specialise in books, but the guy I talked to was not even aware a new Coldplay album was coming out :/ I also have not seen any advertising here locally, however they have been to plenty of shows, so thats good :)

it is really strange how there is basically no promotion in the US for the release. like i mentioned before, i bought the last copy from a barnes and noble, and that was on friday. and it wasn't even on the latest releases pile. really disheartening in a way. but i think coldplay are focusing a lot more on UK and the european markets for the release. then probably sometime next year they'll do more promo here, along with the super bowl. but a #1 here anytime are now slim to none.

They have been to a lot of interviews in the US though, radio shows and also the events in LA. I am not sure they advertised more in Europe than here?

It´s also true that nowadays physical music is not really taking much space on the shelves anymore...I miss the old music shops! Probably one of the reasons why I like vinyl too, cuz u can still walk into a vinyl shop and browse music.

in a way it's true. but even with the interviews, there haven't been much promotion as in creating a lot of hype and holding events. even GS had the NBC concert on the day of the release. most promo in the US just slipped away, unnoticed for the most part. the only possible exception could be james corden's show next monday. then again he is british and friends with the band. maybe it has to do with the kind of support needed to create unique marketing events. like adele's ny concert performance.

I am putting my money on the album sales exploding just after the Superbowl. Marketing platform doesn't get any bigger than that...:)

I remember how MX had a slow rise too with the singles.

I went to a Best Buy (yeah it's surprising they're still around) and they didn't even showcase the latest releases that day. It was all the way in the last aisle of shelves dedicated to music.

On the left side of the spread that comes with the LP, there are a lot of old pictures of people. Could this might be the pictures we've send years ago for guy's project? Makes a lot of sense after they talked about his influence on the album artwork in the livestream at the beehive.

^ I agree.

I also think -- and this may sound crazy -- that AFHOD, Birds, HFTW is Coldplay's strongest 1 - 2 -3 opening punch of ANY album. MX with HLH, Paradise, Charlie Brown is tied or second. But I find these three to flow well into each other and HFTW has really grown on me.

I think the album gets a little disjointed with Everglow through XMTS. Not that the songs themselves are bad but just flow wise.

DAAHF is probably my favorite closer; but Up&Up is fantastic.
