Can I just say that the song Midnight is amazing. Thanks, needed to get that out :P

lol of course it's amazing! I love it since the first time I heard it. And it was even better when they played it in the ITunes festival. I hope they played it during the AHFOD tour

Thought I´d post this here, because it connects/leads to the new album :)

Listening to See You Soon on repeat. One of my fave b-sides.

I noticed actually the contrast between the lyrics "with a bulletproof vest and the windows all closed I'll be doing my best" and "leave your broken windows open and in the light just streams" from AHFOD.

I was like...wow. This totally epitomizes the change Chris has been through and it totally reflects in his lyrics: from being afraid of life and trying to protect himself to embracing it and allow himself to experience it all, good and bad, because it ultimately is all for the best.

Ghost Stories is stunning, just stunning. Its what Im thinking right now. What a near perfect album...

Wanted to celebrate it with a couple of illustrations.

AHFOD is becoming one of my favourite albums by Coldplay. There are a few mistakes here and there(mostly production) but I just love it :)

I don't get why so many people say that Chris sucks at writing lyrics now. For me it has always been consistant since AROBTTH, or even gotten better. People seem to use just one line: "baboom baboom boom" as evidence that Chris' lyricism has gotten worse.

I also think he´s been constant throughout , though I think he has outdone himself in AHFOD in terms of memorable lines/quotes haha

I think lyrics pre-Viva were much more somber though and perhaps sometimes somber gives the impression of more serious i.e. better/higher quality? it could be a factor. Also pre-Viva they were not much focused on live shows, so the lyrics did not have any uuuh uuuh for example (for the most part), lyrics past Viva are much "lighter" as well, combining both serious reflections but also lighter moments of levity.

XMTS is to me the "saddest song" on AHFOD actually haha I said it before but I mean it *lol*

Yeah I was actually suprised when I realised the lyrics were "Staring at darkness, at the feet". That line is really depressing. I agree it is the saddest song in AHFOD:)

I think its "staring at darkness, admit defeat" :) The whole song is somber, also the chords, but as all Coldplay songs its about never giving up...putting your hands in the air and off you go to "find that treasure" :)

About to finish Royal Albert Hall concert now, listening to ETIAW and speaking of lyrics how cool is this? "Maybe Im in the gap between the two trapezes". WOW :D

Ofcourse! "admit defeat" makes much more sense:) Although, I did have a sorta-explanation in my head for "staring at feet":D

That line is really cool, bit my favourite lyric from that song is "I'd rather be a comma, than a full stop". It seems simple but it really hits me in the right spot:)

That's my favorite line too. Perhaps that's the song that led me to keep listening to Coldplay, just because that simple line means a lot to me.

Love GS a lot, very genetic, visually and musically~ O is the most spiritually beautiful song to me~ from Co.

I noticed a clear tendency now in my Coldplay "music diet" hehe As much as I loved X&Y and Viva when they came out and I still love the songs when I listen to them now, I seem to constantly gravitate towards a steady diet of MX + AHFOD + GS.

Like when Im happy and just fine I go to MX or AHFOD, when my mood is lower and I want something quiet and melancholic or when Im downright sad I go to GS. The pattern is pretty much unchanged. Very rarely do I purposefully go and listen to older songs and when I do Viva invariably gets preferred to older albums.

So whats up with this? LOL its not because I was not crazy about X&Y for a long time cuz I was and Viva as well! But I don't know something must have happened from MX onwards that make me go back to them again and again. It could be personal as the best years of my life ever hands down are from 2011 onwards haha Or it could be musically, not sure...

But yeah I was wondering if Im turning into a proper Newplayer? LOL

Funny, because that also happens to me. I love all their albums but I tend to listen to the last three in full a whole lot more than the first four. Curious :P

This is the only place I feel like I can say thIs without starting WW3: Man the Oldplaying thread is depressing. I don't want to be that guy, but I had get it off my chest. Sorry.

Wrong ! *starts World War III* ;)

Joking aside, well it is depressing if a band that you once loved throws away all the things you loved about it and becomes so entirely different. If you guys prefer Newplay, you have no reason to be disappointed or saddened because the band is moving in your direction. But from us they are moving away - that is obviously disheartening to us.

I understand, but some posts are just plain rude... more than just musical criticizm. I wish we could all love their new way, but we can't agree on everything(anything?:P)

Anyway's thabks for being so kind with your reply:)

In all honesty, you can find occasional harsh comments from both sides....but I didn't come here to pick a fight, just explain our/my standpoint because you thought we were depressing :)

I don't see it like they're moving in our direction. I see it as they're enjoying what they're doing and that's what I love about them. As long as they don't leave the pop-rock genre I'm happy.

While what guy says regarding life is true the Coldplay analogy is moronic.

This guy encaptulates perfectly the "Newplay" archetype. The "You're not a true fan" line of argument always falls flat in my opinion. I don't see the logic behind it. I've followed Coldplay for years, My CD cases are smashed and broken to bits from wear, I've been a full time apologetic for them in my local music scene, so much so I've been affectionely labelled the "Coldplay guy" I AM A FAN! :veryangry2:

It's easy for you to write me off as a "non-fan" just because my opinion of the bands current output is disparaging. I'd say it's the job of a fan to criticise the bad and praise the good. Blind loyalty is stupidity in my opinion. His analogy about his daughter is unfair in my opinion, we're talking about music at the end of the day, not the commitment you make to your children. I prefer the analogy of a sports team. You support the team through thick and thin but you face reality when they're not doing too well and you don't praise every bad game they play. Not to mention I'm still here, posting on a Coldplay fansite. I'm still supporting them.

It's also been stated numerous times that it's not change that Oldplayers don't like, it's more the nature of the change. If the last three albums still had the artistic ambition and depth of the first three albums I wouldn't be complaining. I wouldn't even mind pop, It's the corporate aspect that label them "sell-outs" . It's the loss of integrity I lament.

What the guy forgets to mention is that not all change is good change. If my hypothetical daughter was to change in a negative way I certainly wouldn't condone it, but it wouldn't make me love her any less. Sometimes there's no point in change for the sake of change.

Watching right now. I agree with quite a bit of this guy's comments... interesting.

I think he could've worded it better, but to be fair, I don't think he meant it in the Youtube comment-y way. He did say that if you don't like the way they're going and only like certain albums you're a fan of a certain era. And I think it's true for some Oldplayers. Some only really like 2 or 3 albums.

That's why I said "something MIGHT be right" to not be misunderstand as saying it was completely true. I agree blind loyalty is for those crazy fans some boybands have. I don't like everything they have done, but I don't feel the need to keep saying what I dislike on each opportunity I have. This man is talking to people who wants to increase their creativeness and he used Coldplay as an example saying not to be afraid of change, not all the people closed to you will understand why you change and you'll find new people who will trust you. Of course the band doesn't want to get new fans (at least that's my perspective) they just want to create the music they like and they are aware some might like it and some might not.

Their confidence is growing that's all. They have accepted who they are and they show it in the NME awards. They were humble, they showed gratitude, they shot up mouths by having the entire audience singing their songs and everybody stood up and danced. That is what Godlike Geniuses do.

Finally, I understand you. Their sound has changed drastically from Parachutes to AHFOD. I agree that somehow their recent songs sound less impressive than in their first songs. But, in my opinion they still manage to write songs that I can relate to; songs that are meaningful for me. It doesn't matter what genre they play I can see passion in their performances and the same group of friends trying to share something good to the people who want to listen to them. They haven't lost their dignity because they have been true to themselves.
