Actually, in France and Belgium, they are called frittes. Here in the US, they've since changed to freedom fries since those ungrateful French refused to join US in the Iraq War. :D

I read that they were called french-fried potatoes because "frenching" (thank the Lord K is not here right now...) a potato means to cut it into long, slim pieces.
