🌙 Coldplay: Moon Music 🎵 | Out October 4th | Discussion

I kiiiiiind of get it. I think the album is fantastic but I've also had my expectations lowered by MX, AHFOD and MOTS. I just imagine if songs like We Pray, feelslikeimfallinginlove or Good Feelings came out right after Viva, I'd be horrified. I'd probably even be disappointed by songs like iAAM or All My Love if I was comparing them to Death and All His Friends or Strawberry Swing or whatever.

Did a quick mix of iAAM, with Chris and the piano from the acoustic version and G+J+W from the album mix. It feels more Viva-ish to me this way.  Coldplay - I am a Mountain (classicplay mix).

I knew the start of One World reminded me of something.

Anyone getting Everything In Its Right Place vibes from the first few seconds as well?

Well, not really... "One world" piano is so much simpler.

Well, not the actual piano, but the synth before the piano starts. I find the tone and the first three notes very similar but it just might be me 😆

Okay first couple of listens

Nothing blew me away there's no Coloratura on this album but also there's no biutyful or my universe

It's much less pop/main stream than MOTS

I think my favourite tracks are the title track and iAAM

Some of the tracks feel unnecessarily long (one world/Aeterna)while some other tracks could have benefited from being slightly longer (iAAM specifically)

🌈 Is cool but i feel if it was combined with the title track it could have been a very interesting long song almost like Coloratura.

I avoided listening to All my love because of how much people praised it but i found it okay nothing special it's like Amazing day of that record tho I like Amazing day much more.

My least favourite track is Jupiter it's just forgettable.

Good feelings and Aeterna are fun but not my cup of tea.

One world is good but it's my least favourite album closer by them.

Over all this album is better than Music of the spheres, that's how MOTS should have sounded but it's not better than Everyday life or Ghost stories or MX.

I don't want to write or say criticism.

How good or bad the album is.

That in the end we only got 7 tracks, the others are just instrumentals. Because I don't want to. I'm happy with what I have.

There is a Parachutes, an AROBTTH, an X&Y, a Viva, an MX, even GS, AHFOD and even EL. It is true that MOTS I has quite a lot of criticism, which can be understood on some level. But there were such ones as Coloratura, Human Hearth and I won't list them all now. Because I won't.

Maybe there are no more "audience favorites" or "really good" songs on this album, and I would go on to say "real Coldplay" songs. But to be honest, I don't care.

I wouldn't care if there were 2 songs on the next album that I liked, and the rest were from some distant world. Because I don't care.

Because we had these albums here. These are the numbers. And these people behind it, without whom we wouldn't have gone through all this tours, times...

And for that, we can never thank them enough...

It's wild that Coldplay has gotten away with releasing their last two albums as LPs when in reality they are glorified EPs. We get, what, 6-7 true "songs" in the sense they have verses, choruses, lyrics, and 4 songs that are interesting combinations of instrumentals or song snippets that I can only guess CM or CP never could finish or turn into full songs.

That all being said. Moon Music is better than Music for the Spheres.

Jupiter and Iaam are some of their best since VLV (though why is Iaam so short? feels unfinished to me) which puts this album over MftS.

Feelslikeimfallinginlove is nice. Sounds like something off either MX or a Sunny Stories version of Ghost Stories.

We Pray sounds a song Chris wrote for Beyonce but she turned it down. It's fine as is but I hope we get an acoustic version because the last 20 seconds are the best when we hear the chords on piano with Chris singing. Gotta imagine that's how the song original manifested.

Moon Music is cool. Feels long as a mostly instrumental opener. Would've preferred they separated the instrumental from the singing part as separate songs and made the singing part into a fuller song.

All My Love is nice but nothing groundbreaking. Sounds more Toy Story than Oldplay to me.

One World had potential but then turns into another half song half instrumental + throw in some other unfinished song at the end. I like the first bit - feels like Bon Iver. Wish they would've stayed with that theme and made a full song out of it.

Aeterna is blah to me. Maybe a good song for them to sell to video games or dance mixes.

Good Feelings is another one where it feels like Chris wrote it for another artist but then kept it for Coldplay. We have to get used to the fact that CP now writes a couple songs per album with the only intention of bringing the energy to a live show. This is that song on this album. Forgettable but I'm sure will be used live.

Overall, the songs that feel finished are pretty great but it's another album where it seems like they've either gotten too lazy to finish writing songs, they have a writing block to finish songs, or they've decided cramming a bunch of unfinished song tidbits into one song feels artistic or something.

As a songwriter myself, I know that the hardest thing is to "finish" a song but it's been 3 albums in a row now where they give us 7-8 finished songs and then like 15 additional song snippets crammed as filler compilations. There's a lot of like about the song snippets - I just wish they'd finish writing them instead of cramming them into odd compilation/instrumentals. It worked with VLV because they were more polished songs. I don't think it works as well here.

Not bad? Are you not a tough critic🤪

No, think I'm just a bad reviewer.^^ Just ignore the one sentence and focus on the next, that I enjoy the album.

It's actually better than the last one, IMO.

Must've missed the memo where instrumentals aren't proper pieces of music. My bad. LP doesn't mean "10 songs where someone sings verses and a chorus" FYI.

It doesn't have to be 10 songs where someone sings verses and choruses. But it's clear CP is just tossing random snippets together for these instrumentals and calling it a day. Bon Iver is one of my favorite bands/musicians and a some of his recent stuff is well thought out instrumentals and multi-part songs. It seems obvious to me that these CP tracks are afterthoughts.

The problem with Coldplay in the last 3 albums they lean more on concept rather than the quality of songs

They omitted so many great tracks from EL for the sake of concept and i can imagine that being the case with Moon Music as well for example iAAM was a late edition where 🌈 and one world were meant to be there from day 1.

Hey if you like them, do you boo.

To me, they don't sound like instrumentals or multi-part songs that were initially written for that purpose. They sound like disconnected bits from songs they bailed on. The title "Rainbow" sort of suggests that, too, doesn't it? A rainbow encompasses all the colors; the song rainbow encompasses all the songs they didn't finish for the album lol.

On first listen:

  1. MOON MUSiC - odd opener. I need to listen to it again to properly rank this but this should be at the end.

  2. feelslikeimfallinginlove - better first single than Higher Power. Works well with this album

  3. WE PRAY - should be on EL.

  4. JUPiTER - i kinda dig this.

  5. GOOD FEELiNGS - the odd one out. but would have been a better single than We Pray

  6. 🌈 - ALiEN HiTS/ALiEN RADiO - i like it? need another listen.

  7. iAAM - I am a Mountain - nice but way too short.

  8. AETERNA - don't know how i feel about this one. need another listen.

  9. ALL MY LOVE - not a fan at all. I've mentioned this before, the boys haven't done a good slow song in years.

  10. ONE WORLD - nice closer. why the hell would you tag on that end bit?!

I don't know what I think of this album. It's definitely much better than MotS (and maybe even AHFOD), but not up there with EL or MX for sure.

This album sounds like one big interlude to Vol 3: "Here are some songs for you to enjoy but here are all these foreshadowing instrumental things that you may or may not hear in Vol 3."

Angel Moon is on flifl, JUPiTER, GOOD FEELiNGS, 🌈, and AETERNA. She is a fucking industry plant.

There are full versions of all of these songs, somewhere.

that's precisely the Max Martin signature : paroles are not important. And y thinks it's why Chris love work with him.

Angel Moon is what got my 3 and 5 year old neices into Coldplay. Now my 3 year old neice listens to all the albums every day. So obviously I'm very grateful to the weirdos. 😄

Is that "Until the Water Flows Over" on AH/AR at the 2:18 mark or just something similar sounding? wondering if that section of the song is little peices of future/abandoned songs...

You have to put it in context: Coldplay is at the peak of their career. They are no longer an indie band, and with this album, they're taking a huge risk because it's clearly not made to dominate the charts. It radiates sincerity, and that's what matters to me.

We've come a long way

I agree. I use to be one of those fans comparing every new album with their indie ones and of course we get disappointed. But if you think about what they release at the time of their career, it's a pretty good album and much better one than the last.

That's all I ask I guess - for an album to be better than the last.

it's known as "AETERNA 2" but it's actually iirc either untitled or called PROG 5

I guess the snippets between neon forest and angelsong are the titles in the booklet, written in the rainbow:

- the line sung by angelmoon is Sunshine

- acoustic guitar part is Opus 5

- electric guitar is from Man in the moon

- the dramatic violins are from m.u.s.i c

and the line before neon forest must be the karate kid

Sunshine is a completely different song than whatever is on 🌈. It also features Hal Walker

No update from the Coldplay UK store about my delivery. The Shop app is still showing the item as 'pending' leading me to believe it hasn't even reached the warehouse. I made my order in June and paid for premium shipping - I should be getting it tomorrow, not in the next two weeks.

Jon Hopkins will not be happy.
