42 is a great song, well, specially the piano part, but it's definitely not the best and Lost's acoustic version is better, but the actual one fits more in the album... But as a whole, this record rocks, its brilliant and I hope Coldplay keep doing more of this :D

I desagee 42 is a beautifull emotional song, and lost, the acoustic version is better but I like the hip hop thing it's new. I can truly say I have never heard something like thie befoure, in regard to the whole album. And that's a good thing. I'll never get board with the band.

here we go.

1. Life in Technicolour- 8/10- Good opening to ease into the album, but the fact that i know there is a version with lyrics will lead me to never look at this song the same way again.

2. Cemetaries of London- 9/10- One of my favorite Will songs on the album, even though every song is a Will song. This song will be the real album opener to me.

3. Lost- 10/10- Awesome. Great guitar solo, and i think this version is better than the acoustic version.

4. 42- 9.5/10- If i wasn't expecting the greatest song ever this would be a 10. The first and third part are phenominal with the middle being the weakest. I love how it comes full circle at the end.

5. Lovers in Japan- 9.5/10- Another great song, and this would be a 10 if the acoustic didn't come out and completely blow me away. But another great song. My favorite chris song on the album.

5b- Reign of love- 7/10- weakest part of the album but its growing on me. could have been left off though

6. Yes- 10/10- i love this song. Coldplays most sexual song! and all the instruments rock. Love it! My other favorite chris song.

6b- Chinese Sleep Chant- 10/10- Another awesome line. Love chris's kinda faded voice, very atmospheric. can't wait for this one live.

7- Viva La Vida- 10/10- Not my favorite but i still love it. This is the most popular song on the album iwth the public rightn ow and i understand. this is the song the album will be remembered for.

8. Violet Hill-8.5/10- Good, but not great. Should be awesome live. Chris's weak point vocally in my opinion. Jonny's solo rocks.

9. Strawberry Swing- 10/10- The surprise of the album. Noone saw this song being so good. It's so happy, i love it! Somewhat beatlesish, so i ain't complaining.

10. Death and All His Friends- 10/10- Pontentially the best song coldplay has ever written. The song is amsterdam like, which is awesome cuz thats currently my favorite coldplay song. but probably not for long with this one breathing down its neck. The sollo part rocks. and the choir is just amazing. the lyrics rock. its perfect. absolutely perfect

10b- The escapist- 8/10- The album didn't need to end here. Especially because i felt i had already heard this song with life in technicolour. I like the idea of full circle but this could've been better. Its still good though.

Overall a phenominal album. Possibly not better than arobtth, but right there with it. Wort the wait for sure.

Strawberry Swing??

winigwl, I agree with what you said about LIT... I hope they do give us the version with lyrics too.

Was just thinking. I know Coldplay's intention was to create a much shorter record than the overlong X&Y but somehow I dont think they went the right way about it. The songs finish just as I get into them and I always feel there should be an extra chorus or verse or something. What I would've prefered was 9 or 10 normal length songs (which was the original idea) as opposed to 13 short ones.

^ thats why I dont think 42 is as good as it should have been... I would have prefered a true 3 part epic masterpiece. Its too short and I wanted more.

I now really love the album.

LOL! Hip hip hooray!

So glad you let it sink in... I was hoping youd come around.

Funny. i hear a lot of Arcade Fire in Lovers in Japan and a lot of Band Of Horses in 42...(lyrically and musicaly)

Lost is the best song IMO!

Hehe. I do this a lot! I get soooo excited about a new album I've been dying to hear, that I set totally unrealistic expectations. When I relax after a few days and just listen to it without the frenzy, it made all the difference. There isn't a single track now that I don't either like a lot, or love.

VLVODAAHF is an amazing album.

It is a strange experience though. At times I completely forgot I was listening to Coldplay; but every now and then their 'sound' can be heard. It does not fit with the first three albums; the break from routine is evident. Although I love the first three albums, with AROBTTH being what I consider to be the greatest album of all time, I cannot help but feel their time has past. Coldplay have truly moved on.

42 is an outstanding track, possibly the best track on the new album. Yes, Lost! and Lovers In Japan serve as a reminder that this is still Coldplay. Cemetries Of London is epic, it will be GREAT live - possibly an opener? Death And All Of His Friends is good however the 'all singing' ending is too much like Fix You - I remember Chris Martin saying that he realised X&Y's tracklisting was wrong two weeks after it's release and that Fix You should have been at the end, perhaps this is trying to make up for it giving VLVODAAHF the 'all singing' ending that X&Y should have had.

Who knows.

All I know is VLVODAAHF is awesome.

AAch didI forget strawberry swing?? mountainloafers thanks for the reminder. Ok eechm I'll rate taht a 10! suprisingly. I love the song, it's really warm and happy, but I have given my opnion in the strawberry swing thread, so no need t repeat.

On LIT yeach I hope they give us a lyrical version too, but that's becouse I know it excist. I ike LIT as it is now.

Famous Old Painter I agree, I would have loved it if the record was longer but on the onther hand I like the originality in the record as it is now. Who knows maby they will do a bonus extra long edition or somethin (one can dream...)

MY REVIEW OF VIVA LA VIDA....

In case you didn't already know, VLVODAAHF Has been leaked and I gave in to waiting and downloaded it and this is what I thought...

Life In Technicolor (2.31) - An Instrumental opener which is just as good as any of the other song's on the album, with brilliant guitar riffs and trademark Coldplay pianos! 9/10

Cementries of London (3.21)- One of my favourite songs on the album with a very dark feel and a VERY catchy chorus 'la la la la la laaaaay', Alot different to some of Coldplay's previous songs! 10/10

Lost! (3.55)- Another one of my favourite songs with brilliant lyrics and a great beat it's alot like some of their previous material which is in no way a bad thing, if you get a chance to hear the acoustic version, do because in my ipinion, it is better! 10/10

42 (3.57)- Spine Tingling and AMAZING, I havn't yet chose my favourite song for the album but this is definetly a contender for my favourite, I can't explain but it is brilliant, it is one of my all time favourite Coldplay songs! 10/10

Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love (6.51)- My least favourite song on the album but still very good, it's got a bit more upbeat and happier feel to it and the second part (Reign Of Love) is beautiful! 8.5/10

Yes (Chinese Sleep Chant)(7.07)- The beginning of this song is AMAZING...and so is the rest! This one is also in two parts, both VERY different, Yes is brilliant and well constructed while Chinese Sleep Chant is faster and includes alot more 'heavy' guitars taking the lead with the vocals taking a back seat...AMAZING! 10/10

Viva La Vida (4.04)- This Could be my favourite Coldplay song ever, with a brilliant orchestra and AMAZING LYRICS AND CHORUS, This could also be one of my favourite songs on ALL TIME, Spine Tingling and Breathtaking, this is Coldplay at their best, just listen and be in awe! 10/10

Violet Hill (3.50)- If you havn't heard this song yet- Where have you been?. Their first single from their album is a fun 'thumping' song with lots of drums and some of the brief moments of Chris Martin's trademark Falsetto vocals with a playcount of nearly 100 on my iPod, you can guess how much I like it but if you have only heard this song YOUR IN FOR A HELL OF ALOT MORE! 10/10

Strawberry Swing (4.10)- The happiest song on the album which will make you feel so happy and makes you think of a perfect summer day! So LOVELY and brilliant I LOVE IT! 10/10

Death And All His Friends (The Escapist) (3.49)- An amazing, catchy and slower song featuring Chris and his piano first and then it climax's with drums and guitars, a brillaint closer for a brilliant album! 10/10

CLOSING COMMENTS: One of the best albums I have ever heard, everyone should listen to this and EVERYONE HAS TO listen to the song 'Viva La Vida' which I think is one of the best songs ever made, A BRILLIANT, SHORT ALBUM, It's hard to explain in words, you have to listen to it to understand! It come's out in UK on June 12th and soon after everywhere else!

DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS

....Practically the whole album YOU NEED THIS!

10/10

I beg to differ with death and all his friends, I was quite dissapointed of the first part but the chrous fixed up the whole song but I still think it doesn't deserve a 10. For me the best ending for a coldplay album is amsterdam.

amstadam was a very good ending but I think this equals it at least!

As I expected, this album is almost certainly the best thing Coldplay have ever done. Even better than A Rush Of Blood To The Head. Without a doubt. If you listen to that album now, the number of weak tracks far outnumber on this album. Plus, musically, this album is LIGHT YEARS ahead of anything they've done before (except for a few moments on X&Y).

This is the album X&Y should have been - this is Coldplay's Great Leap Forward.

LMAO

I just finished listening to the album and while it will take a while to fully sink in, here is my take on the album. By the way, it is a truly wonderful album. Powerful and beautiful yet not as immediately accessible as anything they've released before. This is a very mature album from the best band in the world today.

Life in Technicolor- Most are familiar with this song. A tad bit too short but great all the same. Instrumental track that goes into...9/10

Cemetaries of London- This is a great, great, song. Interesting beats. Dark tones and mood. Great Buckland guitar. Atmospheric, delightful head candy. One of my favorite coldplay tracks ever and my most favorite off the new album so far. 10/10

Lost!- Another familiar song. This version is more funked out with a thick beat. I do like the addition of the guitar and heavy organ though the acoustic version, in the end, was the better version. Great song still.8/10

42-What an opening. Gorgeous and reminiscent of old-school Coldplay. The breakdown at 1:35 is wonderful. This is a song that has it all. Guitar and piano. It is ballady and rockin' and lush and glorious.10/10

Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love- Better than the acoustic version I must say. Eno production is sparkling here. Faster beat, beautiful vocals, piano, the whole deal. Reign of Love was a soft delicate ballad but I was not blown away. It was good but not great.10/10

Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant- Great opening strings. I think this song will grow on me. It is almost bluegrass sounding. I do love Martin's lower register on this track though.

Chinese Sleep Chant I liked more. Great guitar riff which martins vocals glide over. Gauzy, great reverb, great sound.8/10

Viva La Vida- great song, we are all aware.10/10

Villet Hill- ditto8/10

Strawberry Swing- A real sweet treat this one is. Very different. Almost sounds like a country song meets Fleetwood Mac meets Coldplay's majesty. Great chord changes here. Definitely one of the standout songs for me. Chills the whole time. Wow.10/10

Death and All His Friends/The Escapist- Beautiful ballad and I love the guitars towards the end. A worthy closing piece though Amsterdam will always be the king of Coldplay album closers. Still this track is gorgeous and the Escapist revisits the wonderful theme of Life in Technicolor while adding the vocals that would have been nice as opener. Granted, this is still a great track.9/10

All in all this album is very solid and a definite 9/10. Coldplay have progressed and did not go back to the same bag of tricks for this album. Not all fans will be pleased and again, this is an album that demands repeated plays to truly understand its greatness. This album comfortably stands in the ranks of Parachutes and Rush of Blood. I am glad that Coldplay sound as good as ever. We really are lucky to have such inspiring and beautiful music to get us through the long lazy Summer.

amstadam was a very good ending but I think this equals it at least!

Amsterdam is and always will be the greatest of Coldplay album closers. Death is great but Amsterdam is simply sublime.

here we go, 10 point scale

Life In Technicolor - 8.5 this song is an awesome start to the album though I was very disappointed that the rough cut we all saw before the leak ended up being the album version.

Cemeteries of London - 9.0

Lost! - 8.5

42 - 8.5 The hype surrounding this song was ridiculous.. this song was a bit of a letdown for me.. I was expecting a masterpiece. I mean, Chris was mentioning awesome songs like 1979, One, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc and this wasnt even close. it's still a good song though!..I just have to add it sounds kinda cheesy at the end when it changes back to the piano part so abruptly. There could have been a better transition when it finishes off with the piano.

Lovers In Japan - 9.0

Reign of Love - 7.0

Yes - 8.0

Chinese Sleep Chant - 8.0

Vida La Vida - 10.0 damn this song is so freakin good.. I was a little bummed after listening to this song, and then to the album.. this is easily the best song on the album.

Violet Hill - 8.5

Strawberry Swing - 9.5

Death and All His Friends - 9.0

The Escapist - 8.0

I'm very critical when rating stuff, especially songs from my favorite band.

I just wish there was more uplifting songs from VLV.. but the album is still great and better than X&Y but I dont know about AROBTTH...

The END.

btw it is very late right now, so I'll probably update this with more opinion whenever I have time.

Life in technicolor - 8

Cemeteries - 6.5

lost! - 8.5

42 - 7

lovers in japan - 8.5

Reign of Love - 6

Yes - 8

Chinese Sleep Chant - 6

viva la vida - 7

violet hill - 7.5

strawberry swing - 8

DAAHF - 6

The Escapist - 6

This is an interesting, experimentally balanced album. However, I'm not sure how much appeal this one is going to have to non-Coldplay fans. I've read several comments to the effect that this is the album that X&Y 'should have been'... I disagree wholeheartedly. X&Y is what converted me to Coldplayism. I had a moderate interest in the band prior to X&Y, but that was a masterfully written, performed, and produced piece of work. X&Y is the most accessible, yet enduring rock/pop album I've ever heard... PERIOD!

The first time I heard Viva La Vida, I wasn't grabbed by a whole lot of what I heard right away. The opening riff of LIJ stood out, as did the haunting melody of Lost. I started feeling Yes and Strawberry Swing after about three listens. Much of the rest has had to grow on me, but it has become more appealing with each listen. Still, there are many moments throughout this album where a Coldplay agnostic is gonna go... "ouch, what's that!?"

Finally, I must be really missing something on DAAHF. It doesn't yet flow as a song to me, for some reason. It has some interesting musical work in it, but it seems to be a bit patchy, vocally. Maybe I'll have an epiphany and get it later on?

LIT - 8.5 It sounds so brilliant, but I wish it went for longer, nevertheless I know why it doesn't.

COL - 9. I LOVE Jonny's guitar when it begins. Soo good.

Lost - 7.5 I get the feeling this song will probably grow on me later, especially when I actually get the album. But I spose I just overplayed the acoustic version.

42 - 9 Great song, love the third part and I love how the whole song is so abrupt and different. Reminds me of John Lennon a bit at the start.

Lovers - 10. Love this song! Such a cool 'tack piano'. Bass is really cool.

Reign - 8 It's actually a really sweet song. It also acts as a great break from all the other more 'heavier' songs.

Yes - 10. Soo cool. I love the second verse with the difference in the octave change from the previous verse in Chris' voice. Also love Jonny's guitar work.

CSC - 9 They must have had so much fun making this song.

Viva - 9 I've overplayed this song lol.

Violet Hill - 8.5 Overplayed this as well. But I love it whenever I hear it.

Strawberry Swing - 10 Oh it's soo good!! Love the ending.

DAAHF - 9 Beautiful song. I love it when the rest of the band comes in instrumentally and also later with the vocals.

Escapist - 10. Brilliant way to finish.

In case you didn't already know, VLVODAAHF Has been leaked and I gave in to waiting and downloaded it and this is what I thought...

i thought the numbers in parenthesis were your ratings and then i realized those were the song lenghths! thats good cuz otherwise that would have been the worst review yet!:laugh3:

im listening to the full length for the first time in full, in order, on XFM.

I would have to say, I am not a die-hard coldplay fan. I thought most of their albums are good, border lining great... some songs...

But this album is PHENOMENAL!!

I can't believe it.
