The Official Opinions about the new album thread

Featured Replies

I have to admit that with each listen to the album, I actually like it less and less. I thought it sounded exciting and fascinating on first few listens, but that has really worn off now. There are just too many unremarkable, repetitive and uninteresting tracks on it IMO. There are the gems of course, but there's about as much "filler" as there was on "X&Y". I don't see any dramatic leap in quality to be honest. They really messed up "Lost!" with the clunky Timbaland-lite production.

So yeah...right now I'm pretty disappointed unfortunately.

I don't really think i'vr decided what I think of it yet. I want to wait until it's released and listen right through from beginning to end, as they intended! Then I'll decide

Same here, I have listened to every song dozens of times and they don't grow on me. What you see the first time is what you will get, forever. I still don't think it's bad, i like the songs, but I don't love them. Like i have said a million times, no song really takes off. It's a pleasant bike ride not a roller coaster experience.

Yeah that's exactly it. It's by no means a bad album, but I was just expecting something more exhilarating and powerful. It's much too...dare I say it...dull, in places. It's early days, and we've yet to hear the whole thing in proper CD quality sound, but right now I'd actually rank it 4th out of 4 albums.

Of course I couldn't resist download it, naïve me...

Life in Technicolor - (dunno, don't think I have the actual one, seems like it's just an instrumental "The Escapist")

Cemeteries of London - YES, OH YES! I really, really love this song - Chris Martin sings so beautifully. 9/10

Lost! - Lovely song, though I'm not sure if I like the acoustic version better. The solo is pretty great, though. A solid 8/10

42 - Another splendid song. "Those who are dead..." is stuck in my head (no rhyme/pun intended). 9/10

Lovers in Japan - Beautiful. 8.5/10

Reign of Love - Also beautiful, but slightly less of a favourite. 7.5/10

Yes - Yes. Great song, though not that exciting. 8/10

Chinese Sleep Chant - Haunting. 7.5/10

Viva La Vida - My least favourite, I think. Still not a bad song at all, it just doesn't have the "magic" the others do (in my humble opinion). 6.5/10

Violet Hill - 's been a favourite of mine since I first heard it. 9/10

Strawberry Swing - Makes me so happy. Definitely among my favourites. 9/10

Death and All His Friends - This is just amazing. Can't get it out of my head. I don't want to follow death and all of his friends! 10/10

but right now I'd actually rank it 4th out of 4 albums.

Yeah, i was thinking about that this morning too. I'm a bit perplexed, the sound is obviously better than X&Y but maybe we just get fooled by the wrapping. VLV might be a bit flatter, less heart, less passion.

I'm all for respecting others' opinions, but this album surpassed X&Y on the first listen.

That was my feeling too, the first 10 listens, but I'm far beyond that point now haha

As I said before (and prob earlier on this thread) I love how CP grow with each album. Even if its just a little. Already theres a backlash against it (and it hasn't even been officially released lol) but I think CP have done a great job.

The most interesting thing for me now is to see some of their setlists and how they weave all the new and old songs together...

LP5 is gonna kick ass. This is their Unforgettable Fire which a lot of people were like "Meh" until they heard it live and were like "Holy Shit that's awesome!!"

This is the bridge album between "classic" CP and "new, improved fucking awesome" CP.

Wait til we hear these tracks live and it will change your interpretation of them.

The way they did the intro and outro for Clocks on the Twisted Logic tour gave that song a breath of life for me.

To wrap up, VLVODAAHF = AMAZING in my humble opinion.

But I'm dying for LP5...

EDIT:

I know I've said I don't like comparisons with other bands but when I gotta illustrate a point...!!

Wait til we hear these tracks live and it will change your interpretation of them.

Yeah after watching the MTV awards, the german show and Kimmel, it did change my opinion of VLV and VH hahaha

Most ppl here won't like this comment but VH is the worst song on VLV in my opinion, their worst single ever, and one of their worst songs. I know many huge CP fans and they all agree.

I'm still a bit perplexed by the negativity towards VH. After hearing the whole set, I'd still rank it at 5 or 6.

Get 'im!!!

various listens. i still love it the best!!.

That's exactly what I thought too...at first. Now I don't think that at all. "X&Y" has more highlights and genuinely gorgeous songs than "VLA". "'VLV" is probably a little more consistent, but as someone already said, it just feels more "flat" or something. Overthought and passionless.

i'm disappointed. I think this album had a chance of being great. A lot of the songs have a great sound, but the lyrics are sub par for Coldplay, and at times silly. I like their old sound better. It seems like they want over the top in trying to sound "darker". I'm glad most people here like it but I just found 42's lyrics to be silly. This is my least favorite Coldplay album. I know a lot of people here were dissapointed with X & Y, but I loved it. Here's how I'd rate their 4 albums.

Heres how i'd rate the 4 albums.

Parachutes- 9/10

A Rush Of Blood To The Head- 9.25/10

X & Y- 9.25/10

Viva La Vida- 6.5/10

Hopefully a couple more listens to Viva La Vida will change my mind.

Get 'im!!!

:laugh3: leave him alone, I'm half WITH HIM.

I love violet hill,

but since I got the album,

the rest of the songs are way better.

it doesn't make it a poor single though

I think it was the best choice for the first single

it's made me love the rest of the tracks more!

Any album you play constantly over a short space of time does become tedious having heard all the songs on Youtube 3 or4 times i will now wait till it comes out before hearing it again but on first impresions i am very very impressed

yep im with you. ive listen AROBTTH ONE YEAR NON STOP NOW I CANT STAND IT THE SAME WITH X & Y. PARACHUTES IVE NEVER LIKE IT. NOW THE ONLY SONGS THAT I HEAR ARE THE VLV SONGS. SO FAR LIJ AND SS ARE MY TOPS SO IF I GET TIRED OF AN ALBUM WITH VARIOUS LISTENS, ITS MY FAULT NO THE ALBUM ITSELF WELL LETS WAIT BUT I PREDICT THAT THIS ALBUM ITS GONNA BE THE BEST OF COLDPLAY BY THE NEUTRAL CRITICS. AND ITS NOT INDIE I LOVE THAT, SUCH BULLSHIT BANDS COME WITH THAT KEANE AND SNOW PATROL PURE SHIT. COLDPLAY IS NOW IN OTHER LEAGUE AND IM REALLY GLAD. THEIR BEST ALBUM SO FAR

VLVODAAHF:9.5

X & Y: 8.0

AROBTTH:9.3

PARACHUTES:6.5

If I had to rate the albums I'd go for this:

(in acsending order)

Parachutes: 7.00

A Rush of Blood to the Head: 9.00

X&Y - 8.00

Viva La Vida - 9.000000000001.

Just inching it there.

but that's only because it's new.

I think I'd have given X&Y the same when it had JUST been released.

parachutes is the only good album they made and the only album coldplay has made that actually sounds like it wasn't contrived. a lot of you guys will probably disagree but coldplay's last three albums relied heavily on production and to me that makes the songs weaker. If you rely heavily on the producer to make your music you got problems. If you can enter the studio with well written music and ideas then it becomes the producers job to shape that sound through engineering, recording, and editing. This observation I have about coldplay's weak song-writing is definitely reflected in what i perceive to be one of the worst live shows I've seen (they rely on backing tracks because they dont have the musical capacity to reflect what the create in the studio onto the stage). Also, where is all the experimentation that you guys speak of? I dont hear it, same old same old out of coldplay, just a different sound because of Eno's skills. This album is more or less x&y with a different producer thats all. And of course none of this reflects my opinion of Mr. Eno, who is certainly a master.

Well Ive spilled my guts in plenty of threads already. Not that anyone will be swayed either way. (and you shouldnt be) I love this album.

Here ya go for anyone thats interested in another gushers opinion...

I love that those comments Chris made about this one being 'pianoless' were just one of his overexcited outpourings. Great album. Honestly I don't think anything can top AROBTTH but this one is becoming my second favorite. Only thing I can say negative is that I do sort of miss the old, well, happier Coldplay. You can, well I at least I can, feel some bad emotions being vented on this one.

LIT 8.0

COL 8.5

Lost! 8.0

42 8.0

LIJ 9.0

ROL 9.0

Yes 8.0

CSC 8.0

Viva 10.0

VH 9.0

SS 10.0

DAAHF 10.0

Escapist 10.0

It hasn't topped The Scientist, but I honestly don't think that song can ever be bested for me.

Overall 9/10

seriously how can anyone like this album? i mean i thought X&Y was bad, this is drivel! it makes me feel like parachutes was pointless!

sorry but i dont like a single song on it, no ait 1, life in technicolour.

my view on viva la vida

Well so far I think this album is a success. Chris often said this album will either be complete success or failure. I dont know if it's just Eno's influence on the band or the fact that it's just excellent but it is. I adore this album and cant wait until the seventeenth
