Muse or Coldplay, who's better live?

Featured Replies

In a random thread someone compared coldplay to muse and said Coldplay is way better when it comes to live concerts.

I'm curious about the different kind of replies this would get in different sections of the forum so I'll post this in the coldplay section and WoM section

who do you think is better? why?

Sorry, and I know this is going to make tons of people on here hate me, but I really don't get the big hype behind Muse. I mean, I can understand why people would like them, but I just don't. Plus, I have viewed one of their concerts for kicks and can honestly say that Coldplay's shows are far better.

why? music? butterflies?

Sorry, and I know this is going to make tons of people on here hate me, but I really don't get the big hype behind Muse. I mean, I can understand why people would like them, but I just don't. Agree.

I like less than 6 songs of them. Never saw a Muse concert. Don't know anything about them. Coldplay is the best of the whole world in everything! Concerts, songs, everytning! They're god, magical, geniuos.:bomb:

As fans of both and have been to four Coldplay concerts and three Muse concerts im gonna say Muse. Matt and Chris both have great showmanship but the members Muse are just better musicians and it shows live. Chris and the gang are good to but not many people can play the Guitar like Matt and Wolstenholme is an animal on the bass. they really show their stuff live. Coldplay is more about emotion. depends on what you want more out of a concert but this is just my 2 cents

Now I've never been to a show of either band, BUT I WISH I HAVE, as I love Muse and Coldplay (probably sharing my #1 favourite band spot with like..Oasis, Keane, and Radiohead)....

From what I've seen on Youtube, Muse is more "perfect" in a slightly cold way. While Matt, Dom, and Chris seem like brilliant and nice guys, there's definitely more charm and humanity to other-Chris, Jonny, Will, and Guy. Chris's voice will crack, he'll self-deprecate for 10 minutes before he FINALLY starts playing the Hardest part, Will makes crazy eyes or smirks while Chris compliments him, stuff like that. So in terms of fun factor, Coldplay is better because they are more lighthearted about things while somehow still making 99% perfect music.

In terms of the music itself, as I've said, Muse is more perfect. Both bands seem to deviate from album versions a lot in a good way. Muse can definitely get CRAZY though - watch any live video of Stockholme Syndrome or Newborn and no two will be the same - there's a lot to be said for the talent of each member of Muse.

In terms of spectacle, Coldplay wins hands down. In the early days they definitely had a chill atmosphere and just the right lights. Now it's balloons and butterflies, which in my opinion is brilliant (except for the poor blokes who have to clean them up).

So who would I end up going with? Coldplay, for sure.

Edit - heresjohnny pretty much said what I was going for in a much more compact way. Coldplay has a lot more emotion but Muse has far more immense musicianship. PS - LOVE your name. :)

Coldplay's Chris talks to the crowd and makes jokes

Coldplay isnt up on pillars that are a bitch to look up at when your in the pit and impossible to photograph them on

Coldplay's Yellow balls are better than Muse's eyeballs (Coldplay Balls > Muse balls) ...i mean who wants to hit something that looks like someones slimey eyeball... gross

Coldplay has a ramp that goes out into the crowd AND AND they walk to the back of the venues to play for the people stuck in the nosebleed section.

Coldplay makes it rain butterflies that glow in the dark at their concerts

Coldplay has fireworks.

Muse....... drives past 10 fans all with posters declaring their love for said band without even waving or rolling down the window when there's no one else around and they dont have a plain to catch because theyre playing there the next day as well.

I don't know, I've only seen MGMT. lulz.

I'd have to agree with this on how Coldplay is more interactive with the crowd. :)

I've seen both bands live and I have to say that I enjoyed the Coldplay concerts more than Muse. To me there's more emotion into what Coldplay is performing and seems like they care more for the fans and satisfying them. Music wise, they were both great for me. Of course I love Coldplay to a way greater extent though. :D Coldplay is my favorite band afterall. :P

its funny... and... some one else said this a while ago

its like.... coldplay and muse are opposites

Muse does most of their fan interacting via twitter but live its like they play as if no one is there at all.

Whereas Coldplay does fuck all when they aren't touring but in concert Chris makes small talk and babbles and jokes and maybe even interacts with individual s in the crowd a little...... although individual interaction seems to be something thats ever dwindling :disappointed:

the two of them need to learn from each other

Coldplay needs to stop hiring all these middle men to blog us saying pretty much nothing and interact with us themselves.... hey ...if Muse' Chris can organize football games with fans then Jonny can tweet .....something.

anything.

....that last bit sounds so weird.

And they should play smaller gigs once and a while.

And not just because it puts them in close enough proximity to me to exchange "thats-what-she-said" jokes like the last acoustic gig i went to.

Chris speaks words of love to Jonny Boooy!! Someone else does that??

He catched a celphone in the audience and sang Talk! Someone else does that??

They had plastic cameras to taking pictures of themselves and of the concert for after throw for the audience! Someone else does that??

We fans had the opportunity to send them postcards!! Someone else does that??

Coldplay obviously. I have seen both bands live too, coldplay seven times and muse once, Muse do put on an impressive display though.

While this doesn't have anything to do with the performances themselves, I really liked how the floors at the arenas Muse played were entirely General Admission standing. Coldplay played many of the same arenas and had seats covering most of the floor, which not only limited the pit, but caused people on the floor to be stiff. There's also more jumping in general with Muse, so crowd-wise, Muse takes the cake.

Performance-wise, it's a close battle. You'll have a lot of Muse fans (especially on the underwear stain known as the Muse board) complain about this most recent tour of theirs, in which they played limited sets on a restrictive stage (the towers), while Coldplay basically did the opposite by not only having a B-stage and C-stage, but playing decently lengthy sets. So that's a plus in Coldplay's favor, especially since they regularly played old favorites like Politik and Green Eyes (though I'd kill to see the revival of Amsterdam and company). In addition, Chris Martin tends to engage with the audience in a lot more banter than Matt Bellamy does.

But Muse, on the other hand, is about over-the-top theatrics in addition to their music. If the countless lasers and lights don't stun you, the massive sound should do the trick. Sure, Coldplay has things like the butterflies and the Yellow balloons, but they don't specialize in rocking the audience's faces off. Coldplay specializes in sing-along anthems that hit on a more emotional level, which isn't a bad thing, while Muse is certainly more rock-oriented (although no live Coldplay song I've heard has hit me in such an emotional way as Muse did when they busted out Ruled By Secrecy). A key area where Muse has the upper hand live is the vocals. I honestly think Matt's voice just translates a lot better live than Chris's does.

In the end, Coldplay live is an emotional experience. Muse live is a religious experience. I love a good emotional experience, but I think Muse wins out just slightly.

Coldplay are my favourite band ever. End of. But unfortunately I haven't been able to see them live yet...but I have seen Muse...and boy did I LOVE IT! They had an amazing stage show. It was mesmerising.

While at the gig, I talked to a nice woman who had seen Muse 17 times, and she was telling me about how she has met Matt and the band and has said that Matt is very shy, that is why there isn't much banter at a Muse concert but the music said it all. In one way I would like banter, but when there is this massive atmosphere going on...banter can break it up and ruin it a bit.

From what I've heard Coldplay are just out of this world and I cannot wait to see them. The jury is out for me at the moment, so ask me again when I've seen Coldplay and I can compare! :)

Once you've seen Coldplay, it'll be as if you've entered a whole new dimension!

I've never seen Muse live except on my telly, I think this is where they'll stay

I don't really listen to MUSE  I mean maybe they put on a good show - but if I went to one of their shows I wouldn't know any songs or get that whoosh of emotions you get when your favourite song is playing.

Soo... I voted Coldplay. Because the experience for me would be better at one of their concerts.

Same here.;)

That definitely has a lot to do with it. You could argue about whether someone's a better musician or singer or not ad infinitum, but the live experience has a lot more to do with it than that, otherwise everyone would be going to see Andrea Bocelli and Vanessa Mae.

At the end of the day, I think there's only one Muse song that has grabbed my attention, and that's the one they keep playing that sounds a bit "Eighties" at the start.

I wouldn't go and see them based on one song.

I LOVE coldplay, it's obviously my favourite band and only for them i'm able to do crazy things like non-sleeping for 50 hours in order to see them (this happened in exeter last year, the best concert of my life). I've seen them 7 times, and they're gonna be 9 with liv & newc.

BUT, i've seen MUSE 2 times, and guys, really, i think i must say Muse! They are gorgeous LIVE! incredibly almost perfect!

anyway, i think that if coldplay would have played more parachutes/arobtth songs....yep there wouldn't be story.. :D

Maybe because you're in the US?? In Europe, the pit is 95 % of the time standing in stadium and arenas....

+1

Never seen Muse. I agree they might be better musicians but it doesn't make it all for me. Mistakes and interaction with the crowd is what make (IMO) a show 'alive' and fun. I prefer seeing a jumping/talking/imperfect Chris than a technically perfect but 'cold' Muse....

Couldn't have said it any better myself. The "mistakes" and Chris's unique way of dealing with them all add to the experience IMO.

At least he doesn't try to pretend they haven't happened!:P

to me its like comparing chocolate and pizza, i love them both , but they are two totally different animals.

i have more of an emotional attachement to Coldplay, they are truly my favorite band, matteh is a toally different singer and guitar player than chrissy, there is a totally different engergy between the two bands, the comparisons could go on and on.

ive been blessed to see them both live more than a few times and i can't tell you who is better live, I just know that my mind has been racing with the prospect Coldplay touring again and I know I can't wait to see them perform again, It's like an addiction and they got what i need

Coldplay are excellent live but Muse are simply the best live band in the world. Having said that, I'll be shocked if Coldplay don't win this poll as this is a Coldplay forum. ;)

I think both are best at what they do. If they we're both trying to make intimate emotional gigs or both trying to make the grandest and musically most perfect gig then there would be a winner, but the bands have different priorities when it comes to there live shows I think.

To get intimate and emotional gigs it's good that it isn't perfect and that they're fooling around and improvising lyrics and that they have a B and C stage. Chris could go for not running around quite as much and not improvising and not fooling around and all such things and it would be better musically perhaps, but it wouldn't be good for the show at all because it doesn't suit coldplay. They both just do what suits them and the band, and that's great because it gives us 2 brilliant shows and still different!

Hope that makes sense:P

My own preferation is Coldplay, but that's because I'm much more a Coldplay fan than a Muse fan, and I'm more into emotional gigs.

yeah, I have to agree - Muse must be better musically (though I haven't seen them live, but it shows) and adrenaline - pumping , while Coldplay go emotionally deeper so to say. :)

btw, these are my two favorite bands, the third one being Kings Of LeoN :)
