A new interview confirms that they will try to go back to their roots, making something small. Read what Chris said:

Frontman Chris said: "I think what we do next will probably be something quite small, but that doesn't mean we don't love doing the big stuff! It's probably good for us to mix it up a bit. You can't keep trying to get bigger and bigger, you can't try and compete with Take That!"

I remember that Chris said something similar after VLVODAAHF, and look what we've got now!;) So my point is, Chris can say a lot of things but in the end it will always turn out to be different than expected.

I expect a variety of songs, big and small, on their next album, whenever that's going to come out. I don't expect it to come out before 2014 though, which means at least two years' wait AGAIN.

Really doubtful about the EP as well.

I know Chris is a specialist in talking bullshit, but his statement here confirms in some sort of way what Phil Harvey said to Ian a couple of days ago. That's why I am giving it a little bit more of credibility than usual.

I guess we will have the Coldplay Film but no EP.

I concur LP6 will arrive to our hands in 2014, the soonest. Maybe 2015 or 2016!

Call me crazy, but I kind of think the next album will be similar to the style of M.M.I.X, and I don't mean the album will be electronic. Maybe like parachutes but with M.M.I.X type sounds instead of acoustic ones. A lot of the songs on MX had a little of this kind of sound, so I think if they go in the that direction they might elaborate on this type of sound. But I don't know. I'd be different for sure.

^No, no, no, no. It was reported in a R42 blog that at the Brits rehearsal with Noel Gallagher (Chris played the piano during Noel's performance), Chris heard an amazing sound Noel did, and he recorded it on his phone. Then I think Noel gave them the pedal with which he made the noise (because it was a loop...anyway, Idk anything about that kind of stuff), and so R42 said we might hear this sound, somehow, on their next album. But nothing sure, nothing concrete at all.

edit: Here's the blog, the best is that you read it so that there's no confusion.

Yes, with a pedal you record what you play on your guitar and you can loop that sound. Here you have a video for that pedal.

U2 and Aerosmith have been going since the 70's so put simply your argument is extremely flawed!

No it's not. My point was that at this point, some 14 years in and all in their mid 30's, Coldplay have moved beyond the stage where they are a hip, young band, and are firmly on the road to becoming elder statemen, like those two bands. Financially, there's absolutely no pressure on Coldplay to produce something, so they will probably not produce anything particularly fast. That's not uncommon at all.

It's not a straight loop effect though. It's supposed to simulate the sound of an old viynl LP.

I think some people are afraid that a new back-to-basics album would just sound like Parachutes or A Rush Of Blood, but that's not going to happen for the simple reason that they have improved vastly as musicians over the years. Their style and approach to their instrument has evolved. Listen to Violet Hil compared to Politik. Both rock, but you can hear the music growth from one to the next. So a more rootsy sound would be anything but derivative, IMHO.

And Chris: Please, please, PLEASE...

NO COLLAB WITH ONE DIRECTION ON LP6!!

!:p

The biggest improvement IMHO is that they are more of a proper 4 piece now. Chris and Jonny have always been heavily featured, but lately Guy and Will have had more of a chance to contribute up to their full potential as well, so I hope if they do go with the "roots" idea, I hope that trend continues.

Agreed. And I think it would. Coldplay aren't the kind of band that are likely to devolve...except for that One Direction business, lol. They all have a more direct hand in the writing now and I hhope that won't change.

And just from a biased POV, Jonny isn't likely to step beackward in time to when he was trying to sound like Jonny Greenwood. He has his own sound now. Part of why I've finally noticed and fallen in musical love with him. :)

Honestly, I think he sounded more like Ed O'brien in the early days. He was never quite enough of a pedal hopper to properly emulate Greenwood.

And even though I'm not crazy about the one direction thing, I think in a way, that type of music represents a very organic part of Chris' musical interests and influences, so if nothing else, it shows he's more at peace with himself than he was before.
