September 13, 200916 yr Review part 3 We've had the good, the bass...and now for the ugly :\ Speaking to the lovely Vivacrew ladies after the gig they didn't seem to think the same as me, but this was my impression... The minute Chris came on last night I thought he was VERY sick indeed. He looked really uncomfortable to me, and he was absolutely pouring with sweat even while they were playing with the sparklers (and by this time the sun had gone down and Manchester was getting chilly). I had a wondrous night. There is nothing for me that beats a night listening to Coldplay, and we had such a wonderful view; the weekend had been perfect; the calzone at Jen's Italian restaurant splendid (and mine was bigger than Jizo's, naturally!) But Chris looked very very ill to me. He had a scarf on most of the night, had to change his shirt very early cos it was dripping, and there were a number of pauses when he had to go near the back of the stage to gargle or have his ginger (ginsing?) drink for his throat. I was worried from the beginning, and I don't think he looked happy at all for most of it; at least until they'd got through more than half the gig, and then I guessed (could just be my imagination??) that there was a sense of relief that he'd pulled it off and the end was near. His voice was so croaky, I've never heard it like that. I've heard him tired before, I've seen many nights where he couldn't quite hit the highest notes, but where most of the rest of the evening was great. But he seemed to struggle on A LOT of stuff last night. Early on he took every opportunity to get the crowd to sing instead of him. Most noticeable was In My Place when he missed the beginning of the 'singing please please please, come back and sing to me' (I think it's that bit - when he runs down the ramp at Jonny). There was even one point (forget which song) when he couldn't even seem to find the right pitch at the end, but the crowd got it, and he re-tuned and thanked us for helping him out :o And it wasn't just Chris messing round like he so often does, he was really struggling I'm certain :( Sweating buckets even before the show had got going; fighting for breath at times; seeming confused and laboured at points with the pre-planned banter - I swear he has some kind of pretty heavy virus (at least I really hope it's that and not some permanent problem with his voice :(). He also missed a lot of the planned dance moves he does, didn't get around as much as normal, and there were gaps between some songs when usually they are seemless because he sprints right back into place so quick :( Aw, I feel awful now, because I've ended my review of an amazing weekend with worries about Chris. I LOVED the show, had such an incredible time, and wouldn't have missed it for the world. But I said to Jizo today that the way he was I would rather he had cancelled the show for his own sake, because we need Chris to keep fit and healthy. I guess he's just so professional that he didn't want to do it, especially as it was the big homecoming at the start of what is going to be such a big week for them all. But now I'm really worried about how he'll be for Wembley. As I said, some of the girl Vivacrew members didn't seem to really notice all this, so I guess it's just my opinion, but I'm pretty sure. Seen the band 11 or 12 times and never seen Chris so uncomfortable. So considering what you say, it probably means he's getting worse... :( I think Ian agreed he wasn't looking too comfortable or happy initially, and Jizo (Chris) definitely agreed with my thoughts throughout the gig, but when I spoke to some of the girls afterwards they hadn't really noticed I don't think...and some people said he sounded great!?!? But, I think if you watch the videos on Youtube it's pretty obvious that he was VERY croaky and uncomfortable. And, it's very very strange to be sweating so much at the start of a gig that's outside when the temperature is actually a little bit chilly, so I'm guessing he has a heavy virus. He did cheer up around the middle of the gig for sure, but there wasn't really any waving and being friendly with the guys at the front. That's why I said I though he was just trying to concentrate on getting through the singing. Anyway, I don't want to start a mass panic, so I better stop posting about all this I guess!! I had an incredible time at the gig, and if Chris did feel as bad as I think he might have I have immense respect for him actually performing the gig.

A sad moment in a way, as it's a reminder of so many wonderful songs lost to us all live now more or less forever, and we got another reminder when Chris said something about not playing Shiver, but we're gonna play this instead (Death Will Never Conquer?) He mentioned Shiver? They really should play that song again!

Kinda weak? It was immense... a greatest hits package with something for everyone. I'm one of the girls that Pete mentioned disagreed with him. Yes, he looked to be sweating a lot and a little pale, but honestly his voice didn't sound that bad to me. He did struggle with a few high notes, but singing outdoors is different to being in an arena, and when he let the crowd sing for him, I just thought it was a way of getting the crowd involved. Maybe I'm just easily impressed, I always try to see the postive. My glass of water is always half full :D Anyway, I don't want to start a mass panic, so I better stop posting about all this I guess!! I'm glad that you all had a good time, but your review with the comments about Chris' health really makes me worried! :( As to At one point I thought that Chris was about to lose his voice, but it seems that he lost his head instead. I really hope that Chris is not taking any risks by completing the row of concerts (I hope that he manages to do that without endangering his voice). I don't want him to lose his voice for good. Because if that is the result of completing the row of concerts I would say that he really lost his head!! I hope the best! Always see the bright sides of life! :)
September 14, 200916 yr Does anyone have a butterfly from the gig I could have. Will pay for postage and your time. This was my 1st Coldplay gig, and was amazed with the performance overall and the visual displays. Loved the Yellow balloons with Yellow bellting out, the butterflies with LIJ, and who was lighting those chinese lanterns flying overhead?? I seen someone outside had blagged one of the balloons, bet that is taking pride in her household now! Just trying to see if anyone has managed to upload some audio onto bootlegs from the concert, but no such luck yet. Is there anything out there on the same lines as that gig, but with good audio? Was lucky enough to have one of the free CD's offered on the night kindly given to me by ejectthetape of bootleg.com. Thanks again for that! The better half is going to make a photo book of the whole gig and am taking some pics of this site, hope people dont mind? Don't worry I won't be putting anyones personal pics into it, just ones of the band and such. Just browsing ebay now for some wembley tickets, think I may be hooked lol.

September 14, 200916 yr Great to read all the reviews and stories. I got in at 4 and watched everyone running to the front so must have seen a few of you. Hope you were wearing sunscreen? Saw Jonny first who was miming, mouthing words and gesturing as it was he who was in fact the poorliest member but he didn't seem ill, just resting his voice; usual happy smiley Jonny in good spirits. Saw Will watching White Lies, sporting a scarf so they must all be protecting their exposed necks... also in fine fettle. Chris didn't appear ill to me when I saw him beforehand and he watched Jay Z from a balcony - went unnoticed, quite funny that no-one seemed to be looking at him! Didn't seem ill during show to me either.... Saw Guy warming up and he too was in good mood, so all round, think the next few shows will be amazing!! x
