my dad came and knocked on my bedroom door right after i had gotten to sleep and startled me (out of a good Chrissy dream) to tell me this breaking news!!

i couldnt get back to sleep for a while....i was sad.... I mean, i've been to a concert before, but i was totally looking forward to this one being outdoors and i had good seats and it was a gift from my dad and now it's cancelled and i'm sadddd.

 

Does anybody know if they'll be touring sometime in the spring in North America????

Well, I guess it was coming. But here's a prediction for us all..... Charlotte was the last North American show of the tour ---- not just the tour LEG, but the tour. I think Wembley is going to wrap it up, folks. I hope I'm wrong. But from all the vibes I've been getting from what I'm reading and hearing, the band and crew are ready to wrap this one up. I think the boys are ready to get back into the studio next year (after a nice fall and holiday season break) and lay down the next record. Which means that the existing tour schedule will be a wrap for the Viva La Vida tour. It makes sense, really... to go out with these huge stadium dates, on a real high note, before the "home" crowd.

 

But it all seems a bit surreal, since Charlotte was the last NA show and we all didn't even know it at the time. And for me, as a Charlotte resident, to have missed that very show (I was down in Florida that night for another concert and then traveled over to Tampa for this "show that never was").... I dunno, it seems a bit ironic, personally.

 

Now if I can only figure out how to get a refund on four other tickets I had purchased on Ebay and then resold, as I guess I owe a couple of folks some money....

I tend to agree. I'm hoping you are wrong, also, but I think this tour will be done after this coming weekend at Wembley. I'm trying not to be too depressed about it... I saw them four times - I would have loved to have seen them one more time!

I'm still so sad, but gotta resign myself to the fact - sigh...If you search twitter, there are a LOT of pissed off people, and if you read the comments on facebook, wowee, even more pissed off people. One guy said he came from Venezuela just for the Tampa show, and there were many where the tix were special occasion birthday presents...I'm ticked off that there has been no apology or announcement from the band themselves, groveling for our forgiveness, a recorded video apology would be nice. Just that stupid, all-business auto response from livenation. It was exactly the same as the one we got from livenation when Aerosmith cancelled. For a band that cares about its fans and is so grateful to us, and how we all are the "best fucking fans in the world," they're not treating us very nicely. I still totally love them and all, but come on, they should show a little respect for the 20,000 or so people who came to support them! And waiting over a month to make the announcement sucks. For me personally, I may have been able to get to Wembley with a little more than 2 days notice, if I'd known that Tampa was a definite no go.

Dianne, I agree wholeheartedly. My husband and I discussed going to Dublin or Nijmegen (spelling?), but we were hoping the show in Tampa would be rescheduled. We spent quite a bit of money flying to Tampa, and weren't sure we could afford to go to Europe. But, if we had known the show would be cancelled, we might have tried a little harder to get to one of those shows. I am also disappointed that there has been no official word from the band, especially after the assurances that it would be rescheduled. -Sigh-

The band does meet and greets during the opening band's performances. I don't think they go off and do their pre-gig thing until maybe 30 minutes before they go on...so you never know...

Damn I'm not even gonna lie I'm kind of....pissed. I mean first there's no real explanation for the postponement and then it's just suddenly canceled. I'm sorry I love Coldplay but this makes me feel like they didn't even really try that hard, I mean this is the SECOND time that a Tampa show has been postponed/canceled. Do they realize that? I may get over it in a few days/hours but I know a few people who are going to be ROYALLY PISSED about this. I can't imagine what must have happened or how sick somebody may have been that that last show of the tour was canceled so far in advanced and there really wasn't more details, etc, especially for a band like Coldplay. Anyways, long rant, but at least I'll be getting some extra cash...I'll just have to pop in my home made DVD of the concert in Japan I guess.

I still think they are going to OFFICALLY announce it. It's not like them not too, something is keeping them from doing it. I think after Wembley we will prolly offically hear something. Hopefully. I've thought it was odd from the begining they didn't announce it, an email was sent out. Idk, but it does suck. I feel bad for everyone planning to go, espcially people from FAR away or people where this would have been their first Coldplay concert. :(

I understand how upset everyone is because, if they had canceled Wheatland, I would have been extremely upset, disappointed and frustrated.

 

However, the cancelation of the Tampa show was probably not Coldplay's decision. There are producers, promoters, and sponsors that make these decisions. Having heard the reverence with which Chris Martin talks about Coldplay fans, I do not believe it was the band's decision to cancel the show or to impersonally send the e-mail as LiveNation did.

 

On the positive side, canceling does give clarity instead of stretching the uncertainty out 4-6 months or more. That is one thing some people had said that they wanted, and now we have it.

 

Contrary to what one poster suggested previously, this is not the first Coldplay show that has ever been outright canceled. In 2008, two shows that had been scheduled in the Bay area were canceled, one in Oakland and another in Sacramento.

 

I was very afraid that the 7/14/09 Wheatland show would be canceled due to very poor sales, but LiveNation or the promoters instead held many special deals (mostly 2 for 1 and adding $40 and $50 reserved seats, which also qualified for the 2/1 sale) during the last weeks before the show to help sales at the venue. I have read that this had been a dismal year for sales, and it has affected Coldplay's shows as well. It is possible that the Tampa show was undersold to begin with. In contrast to Wheatland, LiveNation did not hold the same special deals that it did for Wheatland, so that might have been a factor in the cancelation.

 

Edit: Specifically, I recall that about 1/3 of the pit in Tampa was still available about 2 weeks before the showdate, and many days after that, there were still some 20-30 seats available in the "orchestra" section of the floor (at the back of the pit.)

For a general idea of concerts and revenue, go to the wikipedia link below, there is box office data for 77 of the concerts they have performed on the VLV tour. The bottom line statistic is:

 

TOTAL 77 / 44 1,173,310 / 1,308,920 (90%) $82,490,811

 

This means that 44 out of 77 shows were completely sold out.

Out of 1,308, 310 tickets available, 1,173, 310 were sold for an overall ticket sale percentage of 90%. (and these numbers include a couple of shows that were only 55-65% sold out - you can see the list at the link below - Reggie, Wheatland was 73% sold out)

Gross is $82,490,811

 

Obviously, this is just a partial list, but gives an idea of the kind of revenue that is being generated by Coldplay. The list only includes one of the European shows on any of the legs, so none of the massive stadium shows.

And days before the show, there were just a random handful of seats available - and you really had to click around the livenation seat map to find those. A lot of people were really upset that they had bought crappy seats the day tix went on sale, then much better seats were released in the days and weeks just before the show. LN plays the same trick at all concerts, holding the best seats until last. Actually it is good marketing, to tap the highest demand buyers by selling them the least desirable seats at the highest price possible. We veteran concert-goers will know better next time. It pays to wait.

 

Many artists are having problems with ticket sales. I just checked the Brad Paisley concerts at Shoreline and Wheatland. They have slashed the prices of premium tickets in half, not even bothering with "2 for 1" specials. At Shoreline, there are even a few pit tix in the back for $50, but it is a huge pit. I am not anxious to return to Shoreline because it took over an hour to get out of the parking lot.

 

Apparently Wheatland is the place to get the best seats because it is such a long drive from the major city San Francisco that many people will choose to pass. For Brad Paisley on 9/26/09, it has section 103 seats available. Well, they did have a few minutes ago, but I just checked again and sec. 103 has now sold out. That is the center section right behind the pit with a great view of the stage.

 

The point is that the recession has apparently hit many bands. It is simply amazing that Coldplay was able to sell out most of the venues they played for the VLV tour, a testament to their popularity and to the number of people who love them enough to pay to see them in concert. It's really quite amazing that they can command such a demand for live shows in this age of electronic freedom when anyone can see clips of their music on demand on Youtube.
